Marian Brady was simply awful. Couldn't give a straight answer if her life depended on it. Didn't know the issues, kept flubbing answers. The only thing she was prepared to do was attack her opponent.

Mike Newman was a bit more polished, but he talked a lot with saying much.

One Has To Wonder

Anonymous, Marian Brady is not qualified to be any
thing other than what she is, a gossiping, "know it all" that thinks she knows what is best for everyone else. Of course she coundn't give a straight answer becsuse she doesn't know the answer. I would love to know who convinced her
be a candidate for City Council, whomever it was, gave her the wrong advise. I am not pleased with
Larry Glass but he will get my vote.

I wonder why she thinks she's so much better than everyone? I don't see it.

Marian was clearly coached by Dave Tyson and Co. I guess he really doesn't want to retire! He wants to pick new stooges!

Larry Glass was the one who was ducking and weaving, especially when it came to the Marina Center. Anyone who has followed this guy's political career has seen that he is a "no-growth, anti-Arkley-everything, enviro" who is doing all he can to stop the Marina Center. His focus is stopping development and all job creation that goes against his extreme liberal views. In doing so, he has put himself in diret odds with the vast majority of Eureka voters. He needs to be voted out, and Brady voted in. The fact that he is a darling of the Times Standard is also a strike against him.

None of the candidates discussed this significant problem that is being ignored in our fair city. Ignore it or don't address it directly-- and it doesn't exist?:

"In June, the California Department of Justice reported that violent crime across the state in 2009 had dropped from the previous year by 6 percent. Humboldt County, however, reported an increase of 17 percent in violent crimes, with assaults rising more than 20 percent and homicides more than doubling, going from three in 2008 to eight in 2009.

Gallegos countered by saying that crime has actually been reduced during his time as district attorney, except last year, and attributed the recent increase to a faltering national economy.

”Since I've taken office, Humboldt County has become safer,” he said."

"Eureka is the county's retail and social services center, and our already reduced police department must contend with 169 known sex offenders, 553 parolees, 496 supervised probationers and hundreds of unsupervised probationers living in the city, many of whom are drawn to drugs and contributed to the 166 violent and 2,267 property crimes last year, totaling 10 for every 100 Eureka residents."

Glass and Kuhnel stood out as the two candidates that knew their stuff, and have a true passion for the city of Eureka. I live in Ward 1, and believe Glass is tackling the biggest issue we face every day---safety. I have also benefited from Kuhnel's tree planting program---he was a joy to work with and has a great vision for cleaning up Eureka.

You must have watched a different debate than the rest of us. Maybe you got the wrong channel by mistake?

Kuhnel ducked & weaved all night, can anyone ever get him to give a straight up or down answer? Larry Glass looked like somebody ran over his dog just before he got there.

Larry Glass & Ron Kuhnel were truly informed on the issues. Both of them understand, we must clean up this city if we are going to survive.

Brady is a One Trick Pony - The Balloon Tract (aka Marina Center. At the last debate, she stated that she was "street walking". This debate, she wants to be your "Councilman". She either has a very interesting view of herself OR she is just very confused! And why doesn't she know what Ward she running for????

Newman seemed to be almost robotic in his answers. Again with the Snake-Oil approach to the Marina Center!

It is obvious that the Good Old Boy system is backing Brady & Newman. Deep pockets may be paying the bills in this election, but come Nov. everyone still gets just one vote!

Ron Kuhnel tripped on up on a few of the answers, but overall I think he was the best performer of the debate. Mike Newman came off as the kind of person who thinks they know a lot about something but when they start talking you realize they are actually quite clueless.

Clueless is right! Newman and Brady don't know that THEIR answer to the homeless problem '' John Shelter '' has been run out of Arcata. Don't they know what is happening in the neighboring town just a few miles North of Eureka. Arcata didn't renew the NCRC/ENDEAVOR lease so they need to find a new town by 2011. Why is the Chamber of Commerce and Newman letting the fox in run the henhouse. No wonder this place is such a dump. Shelter almost completely ruined the town of Arcata and yet Newman, Brady and the Chamber of Commerce welcome him with open arms.

Boy, the Glass-Kuhnel schills are out in force today. It's like you were given a script to guide you through your post. You all might be somewhat believable if you didn't all sound like a broken record.

Can't any of you clones have an original thought or are you just following orders to say the same thing,"big box", and then repeat what the previous poster says like calling me a schill after I said it. Try saying something, anything remotely sounding intelligent.
Where are the Leaders

"Glass supported working with local philanthropist Betty Chinn, who would like to open a day center.

Brady and Newman said they admired the work of homeless advocate John Shelter and looked forward to seeing the results of the Greater Eureka Area Chamber of Commerce's homeless task force.

Kuhnel said he welcomed discussion of a number of solutions, including a designated campground, and he hopes to work on this issue if elected. Manns said what Eureka really needs an in-take system to help homeless people get back on their feet and receive the help they need, but did not support encouraging the homeless population to flock here."

What a shame that not one candidate can actually focus on the key element of homelessness prevention and enacting a real plan to end the problem rather than mere bandaids.

Feeding programs? While well-intentioned address hunger not homelessness. Campgrounds? That doesn't even meet the federal standards of housing suitable for human habitation. And, public admiration for John Shelter? That's a nearly unforgivable lapse in judgement.

Where are the real leaders on this very real problem for all residents of the region?
