This is incredible. If California weren't an out-of-control spending junkie, it wouldn't need to have such high sales taxes in the first place, and maybe our businesses wouldn't be at such a competitive disadvantage. The answer is to LOWER OR ELIMINATE THE TAXES, not squeeze more people harder.

"But we already don't have enough revenue to provide services that the people demand...," say the spendthrifts.

People are naturally going to demand a lot of whatever they can buy with other people's money. When people have to pay their OWN money, we soon learn what is truly valuable. It is clear to me that state and local governments are doing a lot of things that they don't need to be doing, or employing more people than needed -- these days, for better total compensation than can be found in the private sector -- to do the few things that they SHOULD be doing.

Most of the laws we have, we don't really need. They were passed by legislators with axes to grind, deals to make, or a need to show themselves to constituents at election time as being "hard at work doing the people's business." Most of the taxes we pay would be better left in the pockets of the people who earned the money in the first place, and altogether too many of those hard-earned dollars are squandered by inefficient use of resources for even ostensibly reasonable purposes.

Until the people get serious about doing things for themselves without either help or permission of "the authorities," the situation we are in can only get worse. How bad must it get before people say, "enough!"? I came to that point thirty years ago. How long before you join me?
