Maybe Utica has "international flair", but it is still an awful place.

Who wrote the article? Did the writer even come to Utica to see it for himself, or did he just go online and read some statistics and then make a phone call to the mayor? I'm guessing it's the latter because these USA today "journalists" have big butts and look like they never leave their cubicles except to drain their bladders and refill on popcorn.

Did they mention that there are no jobs in Utica and that there never has been any jobs in Utica. All of these foreigners are living large on welfare. The other day I was in WalMart and I saw a family from Burma and the burmese woman bought at least $200 worth of meat (bloody steaks and pork) with FOODSTAMPS. I am a vegetarian and I don't think it is fair that I have to pay taxes so that the welfare moochers can gorge on the best cuts of poor slaughtered animals. The entire family was walking around in sandels and winter coats. They act like they are dumb but they sure know their way around "The Benefit Card."

It is too bad that you cannot see all the good things there is about Utica and the surrounding area. If you want to compare Utica to someplace like NYC. Certainly NYC has more cultural and fun events. If that is the lifestyle that you are looking for there are lots of cities that would welcome you. However, we have good access to outdoor activities and if you look hard enough indoor activities as well. This is a different type of lifestyle and is not perfect for everyone. Putting down the city where you live is never going to help make it better. I encourage you to do something for the town. Heck you can do this for selfish reasons. If you want more to do on a Friday night start/join a club. If you do not think there are opportunities try and make some. If you do not think your son or daughter is receiving all they should at school go in and demand a better education. The rest of the class will benefit from this.

i don't think it's the chemicals as much as the radiation that walmart's and some other stores use to extend shelf life of meats . it kills all the enzymes that flavor meat. really does a job on the flavor.

Bring back the Italian boys from the '60's and we wouldn't be in the shape we're in. Everyone would be able to walk the streets at anytime of day or night, kids would be playing outside with no fear of being beat up or robbed, Gramma can take a walk down to the local market without being rolled, no gauntlet of low-lifes to walk through in order to get in the store door, people showed respect to EVERYONE, including strangers, and the list goes on...

Bring the boys back ----- they were ten times more effective than law enforcement !!!

It's so easy to sit around and complain about where we live. If it's so bad LEAVE, Or actually do something to improve the city. Make a contribution other than whinning.

Yes, textile factory jobs, American sweat shops. After the Industrial Revolution ended Utica could not advance and grow with the rest of the nation since its uneducated workforce only knew how to stitch, sew and assemble things like spark plugs. I swear, this city is living at least 30-50 years in the past.

Just because you can't get a date in NH,and the only thing you can get is a south street girl is no reason to knock the whole town.

They did leave. The area population has shrunk 50% since the 1950's.

It certainly does have that International Flair - it reminds many in our rewfugee population of home - Sarajevo, Kosovo, Baghdad, Kabul, Beirut, The Gaza Strip, Checnya, Ramadi, and Mogadishu - all decaying war torn crumbling cess pools of hopeless humanity. Not to mention politics done with that corrupt despotic touch of Karadivich, Tito, or Chochesku (forgive me the former dictator in Romania)- Utica home to the wretched refuge of the world because it is so much like home.
