'Pro-choice lawmakers and advocates claimed it is part of a Republican effort to stop abortions, using the Dr. Kermit Gosnell case in Philadelphia merely as an excuse.'

'Rep. Phylllis Mundy, D-Luzerne County, said the legislation would mark a return to back-alley abortions because the physical changes needed to comply with the new law will put clinics out of business.'

ReLLY????? What RETURN to back alley abortions?

Gosnell's "clinic" WAS a back-alley "clinic", inspected by the National Abortion Federation, but not inspected by The PA Department of Health:

"Instead, the Pennsylvania
Department of Health abruptly decided, for political reasons, to stop inspecting abortion
clinics at all. The politics in question were not anti-abortion, but pro. With the change of
administration from Governor Casey to Governor Ridge, officials concluded that
inspections would be “putting a barrier up to women” seeking abortions. Better to leave
clinics to do as they pleased, even though, as Gosnell proved, that meant both women and
babies would pay."

Or the Department of State:

"Like their colleagues at Health, however, Department of
State officials were repeatedly confronted with evidence about Gosnell, and repeatedly
chose to do nothing."

He was inspected by The Philadelphia Department of Public Health:

"Another employee inspected the clinic in response to a complaint that dead fetuses were being
stored in paper bags in the employees’ lunch refrigerator. The inspection confirmed
numerous violations of protocols for storage and disposal of infectious waste. But no
follow-up was ever done, and the violations continued to the end."

Or The National Abortion Federation:

"Despite his
various efforts to fool her, the evaluator from NAF readily noted that records were not
properly kept, that risks were not explained, that patients were not monitored, that
equipment was not available, that anesthesia was misused. It was the worst abortion
clinic she had ever inspected. Of course, she rejected Gosnell’s application. She just
never told anyone in authority about all the horrible, dangerous things she had seen."

"It was not until February 18, 2010, when DOH representatives were escorted in
by law enforcement agents, that they finally inspected the clinic that they had not
bothered to visit in 13 years."

And the saddest part of this story is that the only reason that he is not in business today is because they raided his "clinic" on unrelated drug charges.

The law would be consistent with the R v W decision that the State has a reasonable and compelling interest in the protection of the woman's health and safety, as well as it's interest in protection of a viable fetus. I don't see how protection and oversight of the State's interest is an attempt at "stopping abortion". The arguments against it sound more like the old and tired fallacy "my body, my decision", without regard for the State's interests.

Coat hangers! Only item missing from this man's practice. Always hear that abortion must stay legal so women don't get them with coat hangers. Seems like this man did just as much damage without them. To keep the practice safe, it must be regulated, monitored, inspected, and performed by licensed doctors. In the meantime, I am discussing this with my daughter. I am neither pro life or pro choice, I am pro responsibility. My daughter needs to know what the potential dangers really are.
