Why is abortion seem to be the only option for victoms of rape? Why not harsher punishment for rape? Rather than putting a woman who has already been victomized, through the pain of having to make the choice of abortion. Why not make rape a crime punished by life in prison?

The questions in your initial question are two very different things. Most rape penalties are 6-7 years and with assault can be more like 10-11 years. I wouldn't mind seeing those go up. Although, there's always the chance that a jury could acquit a rapist also. In 31 states, the rapist could have paternal rights to the child, jailed or not. Paternal rights being stripped doesn't automatically happen. Having to take a baby to a prison twice a month to see your rapist is a pretty heinous thought. Also, in a lot of states Grandparents have rights so there may be additional custody battles even if the rapist themselves are in jail. If you don't have the money for repeated legal battles, you might just be powerless and have hurt be inflicted on you for the next twenty years or longer as medical and educational decisions would have to be made with them. The victim may never be free as weddings and Grandchildren come about. That's something a vicitm should have a choice about.

I don't believe having the choice to keep or abort is putting a woman through pain but allowing her the option to not carry his baby. If abortion is too painful for her to think about, she may choose to assume the legal risks and health risks of pregnancy. It should be her sole choice all the way, no ifs, and, or butting in by politicians and strangers.

Fortunately, I was too young to get pregnant from it when it happened to me, but please don't assume that abortion is such a hard, painful choice for all rape survivors unlucky enough to get pregnant from the attack. Some may choose to carry and if that provides them some form of healing, good on them. Others such as myself would sooner die than share our bodies with the product of our rape. Speaking for myself, abortion would be a blessing and a relief.

As for the penalty of rape, unfortunately most rapists don't get convicted of their crime. Some never get reported at all, thanks to the rape apologists in our society that are determined to blame the victims of sexual assault. Every time the subject of rape comes up, there's always some jackass accusing women of falsely accusing men after suffering "buyer's remorse" (aka waking up in bed with a guy after a drunken hookup and crying rape).

The truth is, society believes if the woman doesn't put up a fight, she must have wanted it. If she got drugged and raped whilst passed out, she shouldn't have been out drinking, or she shouldn't have turned her back on her drink (in fact, many cases of supposed "buyer's remorse" as the rape apologists like to put it, is in fact a case of drugging). If she gets forced after a date, well, maybe she shouldn't have worn such provocative clothes, and maybe she should have known she'd be expected to put out after he bought her dinner.

There are sooo many excuses people come up with to excuse sexual assault and vilify the victims, turning the one who was raped into the criminal and putting her on trial. For this reason amongst many others, coming forward to report a rape isn't easy for victims at all.

"A voter" outlined another important issue...paternal rights. How many times must rape survivors be violated by their attackers AND society?

Personally, I think life in prison is too good for them. Rapists should be castrated without any anesthetic and child molesters should be electrocuted-provided they've been proven guilty beyond all doubt. Publicize it so that all can see what fate they can look forward to. That might get their attention and cut down on the frequency of rape crimes.

The onus should never be on the victim to make things right. Society needs to adamantly oppose any and all forms of sexual violation, as well as those that attempt to excuse it or "redefine it" as these disgusting rapepublicans have been doing, lately.
