You could probably come up with some decent arguments against the legislation passed by the Virginia legislature, which would require women to receive ultrasounds before undergoing an abortion.

Funny. I commented at the site @ two hours ago, noting that "PASS" is not recognized by the AMA, and was in fact created by failed engineer David Reardon as a political tool against women. I noted that shoving a device up my vagina for no medical purpose (solely in order to push a political agenda) is in fact state mandated rape.
My language was more polite there, but they still haven't published my comment.Wonder what they're afraid of? The site is called Commentary, after all. Feh!

This ultrasound cannot be done on the womans abdomen? Does it have to transvaginal.

Of course it could be, if the goal were remotely connected with women's health. This is just another impediment to women accessing legal health care procedures. This bill requires transvaginal, for no medical reason. Virginia is legalizing rape.

So surprised a state so known for SANITY and HISTORY would invent something like this. Sorry for the women of Virginia. It's a sad day when the government starts crawling up women's vaginas. Maybe rename the state VAGINA.... the legislature's main preoccupation and concern.

FRUITCAKES!

The ultrasound is no more invasive than the abortion and makes sense to explain the procedure of the abortion. I know if I were having a surgery I would want to know what was happening.

Unfortunately abortion has to happen, it was prophesied, and this is only the beginning. It is no surprise that its the very image of God that is being attacked. The destruction of life, family, and marriage. All for the love of money and self.

When you learn to WRITE properly, you may be taken more seriously. Until then, not a chance. But until then, here's something that anti-choicers who AREN'T smarter than fifth-graders can understand.

Yeah, it really bugs the stuffing out of religionist kooks like yourself that women aren't forced to be constant baby producers for the church anymore. Too bad.

Motherhood is OPTIONAL now, not required. And your toxic church, whatever that may be, can't do ANYTHING about it other than complain. Works for me!

A FORCED ultrasound, in the vagina rather than on the abdomen, IS invasive. To me, it's legalized RAPE when something is put inside a woman's vagina for NO valid medical reason.

Nice try, but your FALSE claims about a transvaginal ultrasound not being invasive aren't working.

It's medical procedure, just like a pap smear. A 4D ultrasound has better imageing to show you what's going on inside your body. With so many people mistakenly thinking that it's a cancer or a parasite there has been need to educate women on their choice. And especially with so many women having regrets of their decision to abort because of being pressured or uninformed. There is no reason any longer to keep women in the dark regarding their decision.

And why have so many people been miseducated into mistakenly thinking that an unborn baby is an "undifferentiated clump of cells"?

Easy answer: the abortion clinics have labored long and hard to perpetuate that falsehood. http://www.youtube.com/watch... -- Abortion clinic says seeing image of preborn child may "make the decision harder"

Ultrasounds are abortionists' and abortion devotees' worst nightmare.

It's an INVASIVE procedure, NOT like a pap smear. If it's in a woman's vagina when there's NO valid medical reason for it, and the woman really doesn't WANT it there, then as far as I'M concerned, it's no different from RAPE.

You can make all the FALSE claims about this INVASIVE procedure all you want. Your attempts to make this invasion acceptable still don't cut it.

There are quite a few women who AREN'T sorry they had an abortion. They are only sorry they GOT pregnant in the first place when they never wanted to be.

Some women when they realize that it is not just a clump of cells because they have been informed of the truth by seeing it with their own eyes do change their mind . This is the definition of making an informed choice. Planned Parenthood obviously would prefer to keep women in the dark because they would lose business. And it is a multi million dollar business.

How many people when shown an X-ray of a cancer or parasite in their body is going to refuse surgery? How many women when shown the image of their baby is going to want to kill it? And why would anyone choose to be left in the dark about their choice?

This being a thread about the *Virginia* law, the law signed by Virginia Gov. McDonnell does NOT mandate a transvaginal ultrasound, so what's the need of arguing? The law specifies that in order to determine gestational age, women have access to the results of an external, transabdominal ultrasound.

Gov. McDonnell's statement read, "I am asking the General Assembly to state in this legislation that only a transabdominal, or external, ultrasound will be required to satisfy the requirements to determine gestational age. Should a doctor determine that another form of ultrasound may be necessary to provide the necessary images and information that will be an issue for the doctor and the patient. The government will have no role in that medical decision."

As to the benefits of ultrasounds, Americans United for Life's Dr. Charmaine Yoest notes, "We know that women with ectopic pregnancies have died when given life-ending drugs, which makes it particularly egregious that abortion advocates fought to prevent women from having all the medical information they need for informed consent. Ultrasounds are the gold standard of medical care, and women deserve to have such testing."

Actually, MANY women change their minds when given the option of seeing their babies in the womb, and that's what gives the abortion industry the heebie jeebies.

Kathleen Eaton, founder and CEO of Birth Choice Health Clinics in Southern California [ http://www.birthchoiceclinic.org/ ], writes, "Historically, only 30 percent of our abortion-minded women changed their minds. However, by introducing women to their babies through ultrasound, more than 72 percent choose life."
