Thank you! This is exactly what my husband has been telling me for 5 years, and what my son proves! A stick and a brick, it was good enough for me, it's good enough for my son, are my husband's exact words. I concur.

I'm so glad that a trend is beginning to simplify our lives. This great article is another example of ones that I've been seeing relating to simplification of all aspects of our lives. In my estimation, child-rearing is the most important aspect of our lives as we prepare the next generation to make sense of the world we've created for them. We're prodded at every turn to buy and consume by the powers that be. Let's resist and enjoy the laughter of happy, creative children.

My Mother never bought us toys. She handed us the wooden spoons she was not using to cook with and a sauce pan not currently in use. My Dad made a sandbox with a roof but the toys within were largely imaginary (except the dead turtle we had buried there one night). Sticks, sand, flowers. What beauty! What possibilities!
Just occasionally I feel guilty that I do not buy my 5 year old all the toys other kids have. But I have never cherished plastic. I despise discarded excess. Stefan played with our big basket of blocks, long before JB did, as did his three sister before him.
Thank you for the reassurance!
