Pitt in a heap of trouble
Sure, I root for Marshall-when it is not playing against WVU-and, because of my friendship with fellow sports writer Steve Hemmelgarn, I have cheered for the Buckeyes on Saturdays.

Just as with the writer of this article, I too am a Mountaineer fan. That's why this humble suggestion is going to sound KERAAAAAAAAAYZEEE! But if one takes the time to think about it, not only will it make sense, but it would definitely be a great move for the Panthers.
Hire former WVU Head Coach, Bill Stewart, as Pitt's next Head Coach. He could even hire back Jim Mullen as his OC along with some other coaches they had in common.
I know; and like I already said, Keraaayzee!
Say what you want, Bill Stewart STILL won 9 games every year he was at WVU. With the Fiesta Bowl win, he actually had the highest winning percentage of any previous WVU Head Coach, even Don Nehlan or Rich Rodriguez.
Speaking of the 2008 Fiesta Bowl, during a time of turmoil, he held the team together, and put them in position to claim one of the school's greatest victories, let alone bowl victory, ever. He held together (He helped to build it.) WVU's recruiting class, after Rodriguez left. The only major casualty was Pryor, and we've all seen how that turned out.
As for Pitt, this is a school which prides itself on integrity. Bill Stewart is all about integrity. Say what you want about the scandal involving Dana Holgorsen. Remember; none of that was ever substantiated; WVU had to give the man his retirement. The man has proven to be a strict disciplinarian, and has always had a propensity for knowing what to say at the right time. He was Rich Rod's recruiting coordinator; he knows how to find talent. Despite being incredibly loyal to WVU, and West Virginia as a whole, at Pitt he wouldn't be that far away from home, and as their coach he could strive for maintaining the Backyard Brawl.
As for Jim Mullen, I duly admit that his offensive coordinating made me scratch my head more than once. I'll even go so far as to say it lost WVU a couple of games. Say what you want; he still did great things at Wake Forest. Had WVU executed (no turnovers) in a couple of games, they wouldn't have been losses. AND, if you ask any coach in the ACC, or for that matter any coah who knew the man, they'll tell you the same thing: He's a man of integrity; a class act of a human being. I honestly think the issue with him at WVU is, for some reason, he was not a good fit. I think he'd be a great fit at Pitt what with their general style of play.
Now, consider some of the media hype over Mullen's firing and Stewart's dismissal. Can you not imagine the next Backyard Brawl when Pitt & WVU meet, with Holgorsen at the helm at WVU & Stewart at the helm at Pitt? Talk about crowd AND media pleasing...
Think about it; take it for a spin; kick it around a little; do as you please. In the end, I think anyone reading this will realize that I'm right. Pitt should, no Pitt needs to hire Bill Stewart as their next Head Coach.

I'll add to the above post. Stewart knows the region for recruiting and he has always been respectful toward Pitt's program even as the Mountaineer HC. Players respect him and respond to him. I think he could hold this thing together and send the players' pent up energy in the right direction.

Pitt has finally hit the bottom of the barrel
in its beating by Youngstown State. Used to be
that if a powerhouse like PITT wanted an easy
opponent like Youngstown, they would have to
pay the school. Losing all those coaches at once
was deadly. What Pitt needs to do is to step up
to the plate and pay a designer coach, like
in the good ole days, one whose name brings
top recruits. GO PITT!!!!!!!!

Sometimes you have to hit bottom before reaching new heights. That doesn't change my surprise at what's happened to the Panthers. None the less, a team is defined by how they respond to such adversity. It'll be the next game which tells us whether or not Pitt has truly hit rock bottom.
