liberty wants the money,,wvu has the money(note it is the standard $250,000 contract)..standard practice in ncaa football is to schedule a medium D-11 team the first game....however,some teams, need i mention ohio state and a few others that carry this practice infinitum.

haven't heard much from you lately dave...we only play marshall as a political favor, playing marshall doesn't do a favor to the state(marshall is better than villanova, much better than liberty)marshall gives us a better paycheck(2 for 1),less expensive(travel, classtime loss)...look at the schedule,it is tough enough this year...colorado,auburn,+5 other bowl teams.

Marshall is a bit more than a "favor". If WVU didn't agree, the state government was about to pass legislation to force the issue.

Liberty=preseason warmup. Horrible for strength of schedule. Should have booked someone else. Anyone not named Michicken.

Liberty, hmmm, I must admit; that choice makes me wanna scratch my sack. If the school is looking for a tune-up patsy, why not Nova (again), JMU, Richmond, or maybe another conference USA team, like UAB? The Mountaineers have at least played those teams at one time or another in the past. In my opinion, Marshall isnít a patsy, given the emotional content of the game, but hell, thatís far better than Liberty. Playing Marshall brings fans to the game. Isnít that the point? Fans = Money? This is supposed to be a money game, right???

For WVU, hell, for the Big East to earn respect scheduling teams like Liberty is not going to get it done. Playing the better of the lesser BCS schools is far better than playing a member of the Play-Off Div.

Yes, I know; SEC teams do it too. Some of them even play 8 home games. Well, guess what? When a conference is repeatedly referred to as the toughest in the land, consistently puts 8 or 9 teams in bowl games year after year, among which one becomes national champion sometime 2 years in a row, one could argue theyíve earned the right to play their share of patsies. The Big East still has to earn its name. Its best teams, such as WVU, playing teams like Liberty is not going to get it done.

unless you are playing for the national Championship being 11-1 isnt going to get you help your team out.
With 2 of those wins coming from cellar dweller schools.
I would rather see wVu play an ACC SEC and BIG 12 school and lose one of them.....
11-1 doesn't hold the same weight as being 10-2 against a tough schedule plus if it make cents it make dollars....

oh yeah hey touchdowndog and all

What woyuld the TV revenue be for an Oklahoma opener however after being a jerk I must say this WVU is still nursing the hanover from the BIG EAST losing three schools. We are still struggling to find replacements on short notice..I know I know but when we schedule, Auburn Florida State and Michigan State 6-7 years out who can you get in like 2-3 years?
Answer JAmes Madison (who replaced a cowardly U of BUFFALO), Villinova and Mary Ingalls School of the blind....

RETRACTION after the gut reaction

spill the vile!!!the real kicker was the 12th game, teams didn't realize how difficult it would be to get/keep that game on the schedule.i think most teams play at least one, maybe 2 low maintainance teams. our schedule is just about perfect this year..if we go 11-1 then we have a shot at the championship..(12 games, jeeze, that a lot)maybe even the best,if you consider the turmoil last year, new system/coaches this year, and next year we will have new off.line,qb,etc, with the same difficult schedule. go mountaineers...going to the blue/gold game shane??? april 19th,,12:30..see you there....i will be wearing the blue/gold cap with the blue/gold pullover jacket...lol

I agree with TDD: It's cool, Shane. Besides, everyone knows college football schedules are normally negotiated 3-7 years in advance. Everyone knows it's a double edged sword. While it's great to want to have last year's National Champion as one of your team's home games, let alone any of the Top-25, that school still has to be willing to send its team. Let's face it. Many of the better schools prefer not to. Even when they're willing to do a home & home series, that's a home game they're giving up at least one year, and that meams big bucks in lost revenue.

Then there's other money issue. BCS schools usually start at $400 K, let alone the bigger money that Top-25 schools can demand. Dates with "Big Schools" = Big Games = big gate receipts, and the visitor wants a piece of that action. When Buffalo was "penciled in", they were still a Play-Off Division school. When they made the leap to the BCS, well; I guess it just didn't make economic sense for them to pay WVU for $250 K.

Teams like E. WA, JMU, Liberty, Nova, and Wofford (to name a few of the past Play-Off Div. teams WVU has played)$250 K is Big Bucks, and a chance to play a team like WVU is a boost to their program. Imagine Appy St, who played MI last season (and won), and plays LSU this season. A good sports program along with national recognition actually helps to boost enrolment when times are tough.

Consider too that both this season & next includes Auburn & CO. WVU has a right to schedule a "lesser" opponent. That having been said, wouldn't it have been nice if WVU had been able to pick up NC or NC St; heck even Duke; Houston, Memphis, UAB, even SMU; Stanford or WA (yes, THE WA); FL Atlantic, FL Int., Troy; Air Force, CO St, Wyoming; IN or NW; Fresno St or NV. The point is the BCS now consists of 120 teams. Surely, WVU could have come up with an opponent a little more imaginative than Liberty.

Setting my opinions that public institutions should not support anything founded by Jerry Foulwell, I'd rather see WVU play South Alabama as they start their climb into 1-A and the Sun Belt. There's good will getting teams on the way up into the competition, and these games count as 1-A games in strength-of-schedule. Western Kentucky is another recent example. Several years ago, WVU was scheduling a MAC team every year. I guess that ended.

I'm not in favor of playing ACC teams. They're not that strong, and both turkey tech (permanently) and maryland (for now) have run a way. Isn't this game a Virginia Tech cancellation?

WAR EAGLE!!!!

What up, ZAC and Dozer!?

My two cents; WVU has earned a right to play down if necessary, no it's not good for the Big E, but WVU has made it's claim and I doubt they get overlooked in the imediate future!

I know it's a long way off, but do you feel it???

Yup, thats Auburn coming to town.

Touchdowndog, my boy Burn (pat clone) threw for 210 yds in the A-day game.

Against the first team D, 7 returning starters.

Mashall is solid imo, kinda like a Vandy or Troy or dare I say App State.

LSU open with App State.

I hate it for them, LSU that is.

What HO, Eagle3?!? I see spring practice has you psyched. It seems all the stars are out, as in out of spring drills for one reason or another. Everything's being done by back-ups, and well, I might add. While Brown hasn't taken over the friendly skies like your boy, Burn, has; Brown has lit it up with ease. Not to mention, we have another back-up putting in lots of time and completing over 70% of his passes, but not for lots of yardage.(Yes, the backs are burning up the turf as usual, but without a lot of participation from Devine. Go figure.)

Dozer, TD-Dog, help me out with a name for that QB.

(By the way, Eagle3, Lee Corso commented on the incredible beauty of Auburn women. Watsa U opinion?)

E3- I don't hear you saying that they actually graduate, just attend, then whatever happens, so be it...

I think that some time on the hoops team helped Brown with his agility, from what I understand. Maybe they all should send their backup QBs to hoop for a couple of months.

eaglet3...know my fuse is shorter than my...wvu spring game 19th..gonna love it..so far, white is so/so,although he is concentrating in the area between the linebackers and safeties..the best displays came from will johnson,wr(to tightend)6'2"210,4.4..coa ches say that is his best position, caught several passes+ran for td...3rd string qb will play slot wr(starks)caught 2 td passes in last scrimmage, and there is a PLAYER,jocko sanders,4.3 soph(1st string last yr)that is plain embarrassing the defense, caught 2 tds,ran for 40yd,(maybe)...most of the starters from last yr are not participating in the scrimmages(devine ran 2 times, sat out;no injuries, coaches wanted to see the 2nd/3rd string)white is out most of time..but the most damage is on the defensive side, kirelawic, the coach..says thin, thin, thin, and is looking to new fall recruits to start if possible...our lbs are the cat's meow, pure 125%studs...gonna'be one hell of a game...love it.

Auburn still has D-line questions, but overall the defense should be good. Offense is a huge change for Auburn. AU has always leaned on the running game and now that philosophy is replaced with pass, pass, pass. I'm excited...yet nervous. lol
