Perhaps they should have given them condoms instead of post-accident support.....

Ha, Ha, was thinking same thing. I believe
any girls that participate in this program
must be on mandatory birth control, like
Depa-Provera shots to keep them from becoming
pregnant again (by men often in prison no
less). If life is made so pleasant after having
illegitimate kids, then what is the incentive
to stop?

Great article, it is great to see beta helping these girls out in their most difficult hour.

It's great there are places like Beta where these young girls can go. But it's so unfortunate that having kids as teenagers is not more frowned upon by society.

It's common knowledge that children from single mother households already have several strikes against them. An unstable financial situation, no father figure, being raised in neighborhoods prone to drugs, crime and gangs. It's just tough trying to escape years of being raised in that environment.

I would bet if you look at most young criminals they have come from single parent homes. Society pays a huge price along the way in welfare benefits and in the legal system. Not to mention the damage done to the victims of crime.

I doubt that Hakim will be Diamond's last child she has out of wedlock though I hope it is, she looks like a nice young woman. I hope she can pull it all together and keep Hakim on a righteous path in life, but the odds are against it.

I am the OCPS Reading Teacher at BETA; thanks to the supportive folks and shame on the uninformed. First and foremost - Diamond will make it! Second-do some research. BETA began offering services in 1976.
Just attend 1 of our graduations and if you're not "moved" I'll personally call the paramedics to see if they can revive your lifeless body & spirit. Rock on, BETA! Mr. H

Yeah, everyone acts like getting pregnant is just
a freak accident, not actually caused by having
sex (satisfying an urge). If this girl is from
a single mother household, why didn't she get
told that is not the way to go by her single mother - oh, I guess it IS the way to go as probably mom, grandma and the whole clan are also on public assistance (not to mention the kid's
dad who yes, should be paying child support).
I would like to know exactly how many girls from
this BETA program go on to have more illegitimate
kids and how many don't have any more drains on
us taxpayers??? HMMMM - any statistics? And yes,
I would like to know too if they are required to
be on birth control, it seems like that should be
mandatory.
Couldn't have said it better myself!

Dear proud to me me -
It was not I that had my head in the sand. The young girl did. We need more "before the fact" programs which would keep the taxpayer assistance down. She may be in the program for a short while, but the public assistance will probably go on and on.

By the way, I researched the subsidation of ostrich farmers. An ostrich is considered an exotic bird and as such the feed for it is exempt from tax. that is all. then when the bird is sold, tax is charged for the bird. That is no different than anyone who buys wholesale and then sells to the public. A florist pays no tax on wholesale flowers until they are made into an arrangement and sold. An ostrich farmer buys his feed (probably at retail prices) but pays no tax on it. The tax comes into play when the bird is sold. No favoritism that I can see.

The fact is that the sex education programs in the school system are a joke and have been shown to be ineffective. We have spent millions on these useless programs just to satisfy the political desires of certain special interest groups. Since society fails these youngsters with sex education the least we can do is offer comprehensive support for them so they may be productive citizens. While offering these girls and women support is my own personal opinion, the failure of the sex education programs-e.g. the abstinence only programs is scientific fact. These politicians that promote this are wasting your money and if they don't like sex education programs that work, at least don't waste our money on ones that do not. Do nothing.

So "society" HAS to pay the price
for "failing these youngsters" by
ineffective sex education? Why not
put the blame where it belongs -
IN THE HOME!!! Shouldn't it be that
the PARENT has failed the youngster
by not providing this knowledge???
MY FAMILY (society) did not make these girls go out screwing around
and wind up pregnant. In fact,
MY CHILDREN finished school and
college WITHOUT GETTING PREGNANT
and WITHOUT COSTING SOCIETY A DAMN
DIME. So please explain why I should
raise MY kids with MY PAYCHECK plus
these other girls PLUS THEIR MULTIPLE
OFFSPRING too. WHERE ARE THE PARENTS
AND BABY-DADDYS in this equation???
Lets just forget all about any personal responsibility, right?

You are correct. In a perfect world parent(s) would raise their kids in ways that promote healthy lifestyles. It sounds like you did this with your kids but you are still stuck, as am I, with paying for situations where parenting may have been less successful. I do not have any solutions to this problem but am open to creative ideas.

Yeah what a sweet story. Helping to perpetuate the lower classes by rewarding bad behavior. Unless people learn from their mistakes, history repeats itself again and again, generation after generation.

Actually, my comment of "Couldn't have said it better myself!" was directed towards the post I replied to by "I could just puke".

I do NOT support rewarding this behavior with free health care and education beyond what these girls chose to disregard.

I think that the Beta Center is a wonderful organization I would love to see it grow over the coming years. I visited the Beta center with my husband and son one day and the individuals working there were so helpful and sweet; better than any other physician, clinic, or hospital I ever went to. The people there seem like they reall y want to help, and I believe they do. I just want them to know that what they are doing great!

What's wrong with providing condoms? Granted, I'd rather they not provide ANYTHING and let nature weed out the weak. Maybe people would be more responsible. Where do you think these kids learn that society will pay for them? They learn it in their homes, from their parents. A hand out always gets filled. Stop filing the hands, and I bet the hands would disapear.

The part of the story that gets me is where
they say "the staff helped her get public
assistance". On top of a "job", housing, child
care, baby supplies and schooling no less. If
someone is working, why do they need welfare too?
Where is the incentive to not get pregnant? It
sounds like this is a big bunch of enablers
getting their warm fuzzies from the taxpayers
support.

I go to Beta and I think it's great that they provide support for US teen mom's. I agree that waiting to have a child until your actually financially ready is how it should be. But lets face it no one's perfect not even you. Everyone of you who have put down this center act like you never made a mistake before. Like you never had sex out of wedlock before, as if everytime you choose to "satisfy you urges" you used a condom!!
Do you honestly feel like a young women should be punished for a "mistake"?? These young women that surround me everyday are mothers they would do anything for there children, they work hard at school so they can better themselves. We don't need negative comments from you people who feel that being a young mom is a crime.

Dear Proud-

1. It's not just waiting until you can afford a child, it's waiting until you are married and have a husband to help you raise that child.

2. Getting pregnant is not a mistake, it's a choice due to promiscuity.

3. You had better learn to control "your urges". That's why the jails are filled.

4. When you depend on my money for your support (due to your wrong choices) then it is wrong.
