Jon Wilner: Stanford's Landry Fields making a case for Pac-10 p...
#1 Feb 24, 2010
It's a shame that voting for PAC-10 player of the year (or week) is always thoughtlessly given to the best player on the best team. Fields performance has epitomized what a GREAT TEAM PLAYER is all about! What gets missed about Fields (because of his stellar stats) is his true unselfish play [below the 'stat-radar']- he sets more screens, for other players than probably any player in the PAC-10. On a better team, Fields (un-credited) great passes would probably double his assist stats. If defenses didn't get to double team him, imagine his offensive and rebounding stat levels.
Perhaps more remarkably, when is the last time a (essentially shooting)'guard' has been number 2 in rebounding, or played man-to-man defense on the opposing teams center. Has there ever been a PAC-10 who guards the best opposing team player, regardless of position (point guard or center)?
Let's hope the coaches, when voting, don't just mindlessly give this award to the leading team's best player. It's time for PAC-10 to recognize their greatest PAC-10 player, who just so happens to be the most unselfish egoless team player in the PAC-10 and on a below average team!
