I heard today about Jeff's departure and reflected on what he has meant to Southern Ms. Maybe things have not gone as well this year, but we have had plenty of good years with him as our coach. Jeff has shown the ability to recruit well and field good teams. I have not been happy the last few years with the results but ask myself: Who can do any better? Firing a coach after winning for 14 straight years is not smart. I think we will look back in a few years and regret this move. I hope not.

Yeah I think everyone but a few buck toting alums wish this had not happened. But Jeff got lazy and did have good coordinators in recent years. I personally would have demanded he fire both the coordinators and let him stay. I hope those same alums are willing to put up the bucks to get someone better and frankly Gianinny should have goten the commitment to the cash before firing the golden goose. Say thanks Ole Miss.

To force Coach Bower out is shocking. I hope USM alumni will join together and boycott the university by witholding monetary support and attendance of the games. This decision is a travesty!

Okay, anti-Bowerites. You got your wish. You might have gotten yourself out of the Bower era. Now what are you going to do? Huh?
You may get some hot, energetic, creative new football coach, but as soon as he gets a few winning seasons under his belt (we would hope) then will he show the same loyalty as Jeff Bower?
Don't count on it. Unless USM can step up the salary, he'll leap to the next higher offer and program. Then USM is returned to the same coaching carousel as the other C-USA schools. Say good-bye to years of consistent winning seasons and bowl appearances.

What were they thinking? Bower has been nothing but good for Southern Miss. Some other school will get a seasoned, experienced coach now. Bower took us from no black and gold in town on game days to the whole town painted black and gold. He was able to get the whole community behind the team. The students were coming to games....

I graduated in 1972 and have been through the times when nobody came to the games until recently when the stadium was full during rain games.

this is a sad day for me.

I am a big fan of Jeff Bower, but I have to think that everything happens for a reason and that something good will come of this, both for Jeff and for Southern Miss. I wish him and his Family all of the luck in the future, and that our loss will be another University's gain. I do hope that the AD and alumni realize that they will have to up the ante to recruit a coach that will take us to another level and that might not be easy to do.
He is a great individual and one that will be sadly missed.

After learning of Coach Bower's dismissal, my suggestion for further improvement of the football program is to ask for the resignation of the Athletic Director who made this dumb decision. It appears that he needs to leave also if these are the kind of decisions he makes. Coach Bower could have left long ago for other positions that would have given him more but he made the decision to stay. I have the feeling that he will do better in the future than the USM program after this decision.

The AD needs to be fired for gross stupidity and if the so called President does not have the fortitude to do it those of us with a long history with USM need to push to have her removed. This is a dark day for USM. The AD has made a lot of Ole Miss fans very happy by making USM a laughing stock. Fire the AD and beg Bower to reject the great offers that will certainly come his way.

I am livid about what happened to Jeff. If anyone didn't diserve this it was him. His loyalty and love of the University will never be repeated no matter how much they pay for the new coach and I will assure that not only my family but there will be MANY of the people that fund the athletic program WILL NOT be lending our support or our money to find the next coach. Jeff has been loyal to the University and to the fans, not to mention all the winning seasons he has had,and if this is the way they reward loyalty, then I want not part of it and they can kiss our money goodbye!
I also fully agree with Alumni in Snellville. If you allow a few "big money" supporters run the athletic department, what do we need with the AD at all. Cudos to Harry Mills also and all the other supporters of Jeff Bower.

When Jeff Bower told Giannini of his resignation the AD said "I did not try to talk him out of it". Shame on you Mr. Giannini. This is a coach who is more loyal to USM and has more integrity than you could ever muster. This will come back to haunt USM. Now your job is on the line, and when you have to resign you will definitely will not be talked out of it!

Jeff Bower has displayed for a long time that he is the best Coach in Mississippi PERIOD. No one can match his commitment to the University. My daughter was considering USM. It will not happen now. If Staff treats a dedicated coach that way how would my daughter be treated?

USM had done some dumb things over the years in many areas but this takes the case. Bower was the best thing USM had going for them and he did not deserve this.

Its very sad when a handful of money alumni can hijack the football program and cause such a travesty to occur. No, I am not going to abandon USM as some of the posters indicate out of misplaced anger. However, I am very unhappy about the situation.
