Perimeter Defense Nowhere To Be Found

Full story: Hartford Courant

Going neck and neck with Providence, it appeared UConn couldn't play much worse Thursday.

All of us from time to time have to admit when we are doing something that is not working-regardless of how successful we have been in the past.

I believe that time has come for Coach C at UConn.

The defense question or lack therefore is representative of the fact that the Coach's message is not getting through to these young men.

Perhaps they are not interested in the message. Perhaps they don't understand the message or perhaps they regard themselves above the message. In any event they don't play defense and they don't play as a team.

Rather than destroy the program or the Coach's health it is time to send the key offenders to the bench-Robinson and Dyson.

If we are to lose let it be with people who have heart and are trying. I think the very program is at stake because these two are underminding the school's past success and Calhoun's coaching prowess.

Maybe after they sit they will get the message-maybe they will not, but at least the intergity of the program and the Coach will remain intact.

Finally the Coach must review and change his recruiting to reflect the new world of college basketball. The days of getting and keeping the great players are over.

Find people who have less raw ability that will listen to your message and we (you) will begin to win again.

Defense as the Coach well knows begins and ends with heart/pride and a need to be unselfish. This is something which many of the current players lack.

Let these players sit and let the rest of us regain our diginity as both fans and coachs.

A level-headed post, richde. That's why I didn't mind seeing Wiggins miss some 3's v. Providence. He was playing his heart out. I don't mind losing with kids who give their all and play within the team concept.

Until I saw the photograph, I almost forgot that incident where Calhoun caught the ball on the sidelines (you know, while the team was imploding and not even executing Week #1 Practice of Freshman Year stuff).

I thought for sure Calhoun was going to serve the ball into the opposite stands of the Civic Center. He only thought twice about it at the last second (and thus is a better man than I would've been at that point).

Which team shows tomorrow: G'Town Huskies or Providence Huskies? Your guess is as good as anyone's...

I am willing to bet that if I pulled an article on the Huskies around this time last year, the tenor of the article would be exactly the same. When is it finally time to realize that these good atheletes are not necessarily the right formula for a good basketball team? Every article after a loss talks about a season not loss and that a signature win is on the horizon. Wins against teams like Seton Hall, USF and St. John's is not a litmus test for Big East play. These guys are really good athletes but they don't play team basketball and are unable to finish opponents late in the second half of games. If I see Thabeet lay the ball up and not dunk it in someone's face who is 6 inches smaller than him, I get more hopeful he will leave for the NBA. You are over seven feet tall....Play with a chip on your shoulder! You are losing every game.

Marquette is quite beatable if you play defense. If they come out lazy and lacidasical get ready for another humiliating loss, it's time to put up or shut up! These guys wanted to play big time basketball now is your time to prove it, otherwise we have a bunch of posers who need to go home now. Calhoun deserves better, Uconn deserves better! Kick the Golden Eagles back to Milwaukee! If they don't succeed then maybe scholarships should be taken back and we can find someone that can play with balls and heart.

Or more simple...they have zero people who can make a wide open 3...they would have won last game had they hit 5 three point shots...they can not hit any...they recruited nobody who could shoot a wide open shot like john gwen, chis smith, brian fair, ray allen, albert mourning, ben gordon & r.anderson...

to be honest too much is made about the outside defense because against pc and nd they had kids shoot out of their backsides...be realistic...those kids on a normal night could not shoot that well with a open gym....

in addition, robinson and adrian should not dribble...just slash to the boards and pound the boards

Maybe but I think the common theme is someone ALWAYS has a career game against Uconn. I blame their perimeter defense and more importantly their lack of offense. Watching the Villanova game, they had young guards who can shoot, score and most imprortantly they shoot 70% from the free throw line. I think I can kick the ball in from the line more successfully than this UC team can shoot it. Embarassing!!

Uconn is the team that looks intimidating in warmups with their height and athleticism (sp?) and then get beaten up by a team who plays fundamentally sound. I agree about their shooters....

is anyone as disappointed with Craig Austrie as i'am ? this kid has been on the team for 3 years and he still looks like a deer in the headlights. Does beverly have any shooting capability?

Thanks Mike, for including the game time and channel with your article. I hope this becomes a regular practice for the Courant for any sports event that is important enough to get its own article.

Craig Austrie is who he is -- a good kid, but just an okay player. He's probably better suited to be in a mid-major program. We're never going to get much more out of Craig than what he has shown.

I took in the Kansas/Oklahoma game last monday at Kansas' field house and all I can say is WOW. Here is a team in Kansas who has won 4 national titles- but not one since 1988. Along the way they have had some loaded teams expected to make big runs deep into the tournament, but have lost to some inferior opponents in early rounds-including bradley two years ago.

Are the fans there spoiled and complete a ssholes to the team like connecticut fans? Absolutely not-unbelievable support for the team and the school.

Too bad we have such spoiled fans that act like p ricks to the uconn team thats working incredibly hard.
