Aggies hold off Prairie View, get Walker first win in head-coac...

There are 27 comments on the Las Cruces Sun-News story from Sep 12, 2009, titled Aggies hold off Prairie View, get Walker first win in head-coac.... In it, Las Cruces Sun-News reports that:

DeWayne Walker doesn't care about style points. He cares about wins. On Saturday night, the New Mexico State Aggie football team was able to get its first-year head coach the inaugural win of his career, a 21-18 home triumph over Prairie View A&M. Up 21-3 early in the fourth quarter, the Aggies nearly let their lead slip away.

Hey AgFan,

That is my point about the QB sitiuation. Flemming is the choice( not an impressive QB)but he is the Walker or Rose's guy. I am dissappointed becasue of the comments on the Walls kid and watching through Spring Ball, and reports during the fall camp was neck and neck.

As poorly as Flemming has performed, what is the reason you don't play the other kid? Just tell us the big armed kid, is a Mumme recurit and we are not going to throw the ball downfield. Don't tell us all year we have two QB's, becasue we don't. Hey Coach Walker is in charge and making the call which is his right. I have just seen the game at this level and understand the idea of Coach getting his guy over the left-over guy. Sometimes the blinders hurts the decision making.

you people make me sick

prairie view a&m is one of the better FCS (I-AA) teams...they were ranked #40 in last week's poll (out of nearly 300)

the top teams in I-AA basically have the same talent levels as the bottom teams in I-A

just look at some of the other scores from around the country...

COLORADO STATE 24 - Weber State 23
FLORIDA STATE 19 - Jacksonville State 9
MARYLAND 38 - James Madison 35 (OT)
New Hampshire 23 - BALL STATE 16

last week

Villanova 27 - TEMPLE 24
INDIANA 19 - Eastern Kentucky 13
HAWAII 25 - Central Arkansas 20
WEST VIRGINIA 33 - Liberty 20
EAST CAROLINA 29 - Appalachian State 24
#22 IOWA 17 - Nothern Iowa 16
WYOMING 29 - Weber State 22
MARSHALL 31 - Southern Illinois 28
William & Mary 26 - VIRGINIA 14
Richmond 24 - DUKE 16
KANSAS STATE 21 - Massachusetts 17
CENTRAL FLORIDA 28 - Samford College 24
SMU 31 - Stephen F. Austin 23

this was a big win and a strong performance for NMSU...things are really starting to look UP

what i don't understand is why you even read the story if you hate the football program so much

PVA&M is a solid team but this was FAR from a strong performance for NMSU.

From a play-calling and time management standpoint the second half was horrific.

And I definitely don't hate the football program as I have season tickets. I think you'll find that us and most of the other boosters around us felt this was a poor showing by NMSU and had nothing to do with PVA&M.

The Aggies looked undisciplined for most of the second half and the coaching staff made some serious mistakes.

Can they turn it around? Of course. But they need a wake up call before the big game against UTEP.

I sat next to a couple of NFL scouts who knew some men in town at the P.V.A & M game.
They were asked who was better, NMSU or UTEP.
Responce was UTEP has a very smart O-Line and talented young running backs still learning to play. Their biggest weakness in their D-Line (little experience and poor talent and Defensive backfield. NMSU will have to throw the ball more.
The defensive backfield of the Aggies is much better than UTEP. Positive comments were made about the position coaches on offense for NMSU.
They were surprised that both NMSU and UTEP could not recruit better talent.
It's the physical location that hinders recruiting. Las Cruces is decent but very small and Isolated. El Paso is essentially Mexico. Who the hell wants to live in Mexico?

I'm happy we won as well. But no offense, as I understand it, Prairie View A&M is anything but a quality football school. Even if they were a decent I-AA, the Aggies should have handled them soundly, new coach or not.

This will probably be the only win on the season for the Aggies. I know that if you give Walker the chance to recruit his style of players over the next few season he will rebuild the Aggies into a more competitive team. Only thing that sucks is that not all of the fans realize this and will be calling for the resignation or termination of Walker. Let cooler heads prevail and get this team on the right track first. Congratulations Coach Walker on your first win here at NMSU. Good luck in the future.
Exactly where is Walker going to recruit his style of players,at local hotels while the rest of his staff is on the road and he makes Associated Press for questionable behavior? The choice is simple, a horrendous Div. 1 program or a marginally competitive 1-AA program. The question is if Duh wayne can even land 1 two star rated player this season, let alone 3,4,or5 star rated recruits. Are you delusional or just a PollyAnna?
