Men's basketball | Ohio State 69, Penn State 66: Buckeyes hold of Nittany Lions | BuckeyeXtra

Full story: Columbus Dispatch

That last step from No.2 to No.1 was harder than it looked. The Ohio State men's basketball team had beaten Penn State in 13 consecutive games but barely extended it today, holding off a Nittany Lions rally in the second half for a 69-66 victory in Value City Arena.

It was a thriller in the Schottenstein Arena + a sellout crowd with freshmen Aaron Craft and Jared Sullinger ea scoring 19 pts to lead the Buckeyes to an 18 - 0 record over the red/hot Nittany Lions of Penn State 66 to 63 ... Go Bucks !

These are the un-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions, correct? What a great run for OSU but their undefeated days are coming to a close -- they have been "figured out."

It will happen as soon as next weekend when they go to UIUC. Foul shooting, intensity, their inability to control the tempo of the game, among other things will be their downfall. They have a very good team but not a number 1 team.

They deserve to be number 1 because Duke lost. If you think number 1 teams should always dominate, then you have never played organized sports. This team will lose eventually. It is just unrealistic for them to go undefeated. Next week they will be ranked #1 and they will continue to work on their game and know that they can't be complacent in January.

They did beat MSU and ILL so they aren't exactly bad.

A nice win! Penn State played well. I don't know why every game has to be close though.

Penn State beat Michigan State and Illinois, both ranked teams, on their own court. They came into Columbus and played the Bucks extremely well. I think they may be better than we think. Only time will tell.
Good thing Craft and Buford had good shooting-their three-point baskets, along with Diebler coming alive in the second half, made all the difference. Sullinger making the key shots and his free throws at the end won it for them.
Sure they are probably going to lose. Brutus, you are right-No 1 teams do not always dominate. This isn't football. It is unrealistic to think that they will go undefeated, but let's enjoy the ride for now!

The Big Ten Basketball Conference is very tough .... Heck the Buckeyes beat the best of the SEc ..South Carolina and Florida in Gainesville + beat the best in the ACC -The Florida St seminoles in Tallahassee . Going 18 - 0 is very ,very difficult . There are 345 Div I basketball teams and only 4 teams are undefeated ...Ohio State at 18 - 0 , Kansas at 17 - 0 , Syracuse at 16 - 0 , and San Diego St at 18 - 0 . Ohio State is a fun team to watch and the Buckeyes have seniors as well as three or four freshmen in the mix ... Keep on Trucking and Go Bucks !

Penn State is not a bad team, they have some players.

Huge game for Craft - he sure made PSU pay for leaving him open early and great defense on Battle at the end. He and Sullinger played quite well off each other, Matta's "Stockton and Malone" comparison was apt.

I wonder if Lighty was sick or something, he was quite erratic on offense tonight.

Thomas has to realize there is no requirement to get a shot off right away once in the game.

So...we will be #1, at least for awhile.
