I agree. They have absolutely NO shot at the NCAA. When you really look at the schedule, they only played 12 teams with winning records and went 6-6.

The teams the beat with winning records? UMass, W.Michigan, N.Dakota St.(x2), Oral Roberts, and Oakland.

You can't go by record. IUPUI didn't beat any teams that are any good - except for UMass who may not get into the Tournament. They'll get no credit from the Selection Committee because they know IUPUI's record is a benefit of playing the cupcake schedule they played. The problem is if they can find better teams to play, they will probably not be able to win 26 games. All they had to do to get into the Tournament was beat Oral Roberts. They didn't get the job done.

As far as the NIT goes it still amy be tough to get in. All the teams that deserve to be in the NCAA Tournament but won't be because of giving automatic bids to teams like Oral Roberts, Sienna, etc. will be in before IUPUI. It will remain to be seen whether IUPUI will get in. Coach Hunter's saying it will be a travesty if IUPUI isn't selected because he knows there is a reasonably good chance they won't be.

George Hill is the best player IUPUI has ever had and the most unselfish player I have seen as of late. George cannot carry that whole team every game. It's a shame that those players don't help him out the way they should. If they had, they certainly would have won!!

I agree no Summit team had a NCAA worthy resume, but there is a reason for the automatic bid. Look at George Mason a few years ago. Shocks the world and makes the final four.

Are you actually trying to argue against the automatic bids? Butler never would have become Butler without it.

There are usually 5-6 somewhat deserving teams that have their NCAA bid burst, and that leaves 26-27 slots left to fill the 32 team bracket out. Their RPI in the 70's means they are a legit contender for the NIT. If not, they will play in the new tourney. Hunter is right. It would be a travesty if they didn't play in the postseason.

As for their guarding techniques, ORU has 2 players who are absolutely NO threat to shoot 3's despite their play on the wings. Sango and #3 (I forgot his name). The problem was they backed off TOO far, and Sango was able to drive the lane.

Drew Connor played a much better game against ORU at the Jungle. He did struggle last night, as did Pettiford. It will be sad to see Montgomery leave. He was a great 2 year player, and a great shooter. Coach Hunter needs to get more big men now.

Here’s the issue, they might get into the NIT or the CBI (for those of you who don’t know it’s another post season tournament to compete with the NIT), but if they don’t get into either I wouldn’t be shocked. Actually I don’t expect them to get invited.

Here’s why I wouldn’t be shocked if they stayed home for post season play.

They are 6-6 against teams with winning records
They have beaten only 2 teams out of conference with a winning record.
They have a miniscule fan base – This is important because the lower tier tourneys need TV ratings and money.

As for recruiting, I think Ron Hunter is doing and OUTSTANDING job. To have the quality of players that he does with the lack of support from the university and because of that, lack of a facility…I am truly amazed!

IUPUI, if you’re listening…You don’t get coaches like Ron Hunter very often so you might want to take advantage. If you want an example, please see Valparaiso University.

You do realise that everyone is starting to call Butler the 2008 George Mason. And I've also heard that this season in the NCAA there will be allot of large school upsets from small schools like Butler.

All solid points. However, how does that compare to their competition for a tourney slot? With the new CBI (I assume 32 teams more) and the NIT, that is 64 more slots. You'd have to dig into the 140 RPI range to find people who wouldn't play in a postseason tourney this year.

The fanbase argument only makes logical sense in the first game, which means they'd never get a home game. They wouldn't project to get as far as NYC or wherever the CBI finals are held, so they'd let them in. We're not talking about Notre Dame getting into a BCS game here...once you get past the top 10-20 teams in the NIT, not many teams have a large enough fanbase that would follow them.
