It is rare to ask staff to stay. You don't want the kids running to them every time a new guy gives them hell.

Sounds like several commentors who have either played for Kill or had kids involved in his program think the guy is a heckuva coach. I hope so. He's got a big job coaching up kids who are not the premier level players. But the biggest job he has is recruiting --- can he get some players to come to the U? And if he does, can he and his staff make them better players?

Oh yeah, he also needs to find out quickly if he has a QB who can throw the football and lead a team, some linemen who can block or rush the passer, and some defenders who can actually tackle.

Thank God he never used the term "Gopher Nation" once. I like him already. Good luck, Coach.

As a recovering Hawkeye with the 1963-67 seasons' memories way too vivid still, take a breath everyone.

It took until Hayden Fry showed up with his program in the 80s to drive the demons out of Iowa football. Playing sound fundamentally became the standard. And, oh by the way, they invest more in their football program than the bottom feeders.

It isn't magic, rather than bellyache, find a way to help.

It sounds like the same shi- they said about Brewster when he was hired. I think Maturi decided to save some money and get Kill instead of hiring someone well know. In a few years we'll be looking for a new coach. This new President should fire Maturi as soon as he takes over and hire a good AD. The only good hire he did was Tubby Smith and he lucked into that. Maturi went about his business of hiring a coach the same way Chilly went about getting the Vikings a new QB. I think Muturi really dropped the ball on the U.

No higher profile coach would touch this job... you have a bad AD and a new president who will bring in his own AD within a year. Don't hate on Coach Kill because you have a bad AD -- the AD got lucky in getting this guy.

Gopher football fans need to give Coach Kill a chance. The fact that he was hired by a moron doesn't mean he himself is one. Let's welcome him to Minnesota and see what he can do. Don't associate him and Maturi together or it will be hard to be fair with Kill. He's got a tough road in front of him, he needs the support of the fans because there are going to be days when he wonders what the hell he got himself into, and its knowing the fans understand the situation that will make those days more productive for him. Good Luck Coach!

This sounds a lot like Ohio State's hire of Jim Tressel.(Youngstown State University) That worked out pretty well. The Gophers' last two games resulted in wins over Bowl teams. 2011 looks pretty good to me. Go Gophers !

Maturi is good at buying time, which is the name of the game, two more years and Maturi retires, Kill has at least three years to show what he can do. It is a mutual backscratchin society in the athletic world.

Well, it's hard to know what the Gophers are getting in Kill exactly. But Maturi will either be vindicated or sending out his resume. His job has to be on the line on this one. At the very least this has to be an improvement over Brewster but it's true that this hire is not a big splash. Time will tell . . .

Maturi needs to be gone. He has cost this athletic department so much in buyout money, if he was in private sector he would have been fired months ago.

Monson - buyout contract after giving him an extension

Mason - buyout contract after giving him multi million dollar contract

Brewster - contract extension / contract buyout contract

Maturi is a failure he must go look at the examples. Minnesotans are fools!!!!!!!!!!

How about promoting Maturi. Lets make him head custodian. I bet he would screw that up too.

How many others think the pocketbook at the U got in the way of the big bame hire?
At this point I wouldn't care if the U turned into a football factory. I want to see excellent football there before I die.

Joel Maturi also foolishly extended the contract of Gophers women's basketball coach Pam Borton, in spite of the fact that she can't persuade Top 25 national recruits to even visit Minnesota let alone sign with the U. The Gophs' 103-56 loss to Baylor Sunday sadly demonstrates just how far the program has fallen since Borton took the players recruited by her two immediate predecessors to the 2005 Final Four.

Meanwhile, back in A-List Hireville, Indiana will announce Tuesday that Oklahoma offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson is the Hoosiers' new head football coach.
