Tubby Smith, Gophers try to stay on even keel even after upset of No. 8 North Carolina

Full story: TwinCities.com

Tubby Smith watched almost emotionlessly Friday night as an elated Gophers crowd of about a hundred fans sang "Minnesota Rouser" in front of the players after their 72-67 upset victory over No.

Minnesota looked like the better team. North Carolina was rated #8 on reputation of the program, but showed some inexperience. At the end of the year, this North Carolina team will be much improved, so the Gophers are right to not get too pumped up after this one game.

They'll get another test Sunday, but it looks like the Gophers will keep getting better as this group gets it's identity.

Mbakwe, Walker, Rollins, Nolan, Hoffarber, Sampson, Iverson, Williams, and eventually Joseph...that's 9 deep in the rotation without losing a step.

They won't be under the radar for long...this team is well coached and has talent!

this team has a great approach to the game of basketball. I like Tubby and his vast experience, he's an even keel on what has to be a very high moment for the team. Steady and guiding is the coaches job. Plus having smart players like Hoffarber makes a coach look good. Hoffarber does not make many mistakes, he's thinking two steps ahead of the next guy. Great win for the team, and state of Minnesota. Brings back memories of Trent Tucker and days gone by. Keep it rolling and we will be a top 4 Big Ten team passing cheesy wi and over rated IL. Go GOPHS!

I like defensive mentality this team has as it kind of reminds me of the '97 team. Great defensive PG and interior guys who like to bang, yes even Sampson gets physical on the defensive end. Jospeh, Mbwake, Hoffarber and Sampson are all good offensive options and if Williams can develop throughout the year they could be a threat in March.

For all you Tubby bashers chew on this one for a while. You will say its a non- conference win, it doesn't mean anything but if they had lost your tune would have been different. Nice win for the program, thanks to Tubby. Too bad he couldn't coach football too.

4 of the Gopher starters are just as athletic as the NC players if not more. Who cares what the pre-season polls say, they mean nothing, which has been proven year and year out. If Devoe comes back soon and gels in with this team again, they are definitely one of the top 3 or 4 teams in the Big ten. NCAA no doubt, beyond that, I like our chances with Tubbys coaching.

The Gophers also have a date with Virginia and a surprisingly tough So Dak St team who have a couple of nice wins early in the year and play tough on the road...

NC was obviously overrated. The Gophers will come down to earth after their first two weeks in the Big Ten when they find themselves 1-3-check out the schedule

Just think how good they'll be when they get their regular point guard back.
