number eight said it right. under coker, the team always played not to lose, rather than to win. takes time to readjust an attitude. and who knows how much talent was not coached by coker--those who went to the nfl probably learned things that were never explained to them before.(coker could write a bio called "how not to manage").
btw, neoosu fan, does your change of heart include gaining 75 lbs and donning a red shirt?

All I can say is, did you canes fans manage to watch the OSU - Perdue match? Pity! You would have seen how a REAL DEFENSE works.
GO BUCKEYES!!!
Maybe while in Columbus you can enroll in a Kindergarten class. The name of the college in Indiana, the one in that pityfull conference that you play in (that should be renamed the Big 2, Ohio State and Michigan-in most years)is Purdue, not Perdue. I'm glad that you are a Buckeye fan, Canes fans know how to spell.

You and Pago Pago Trojan are a piece of work. I can take the uninformed fans who don't know squat about what it takes to rebuild a teams mid set(as so many of the informed fans who posted earlier noted). Miami is not USC, LSU or even Texas talent wise (it is ironnic, that Texas lost at home to Kansas State and should have lost to UCF, while USC has lost to Oregan St., UCLA and Stanford, these are all teams they were favored by at least 15 points to beat). Miami hopefully will be 8-4, maybe even 7-5 this year. Give Shannon time to get the non performing Coker players out and get the players that he will recruit in!!! That is why many people say that UM fans are ignorant, because of the mind set that a coaching change would bring an undeafeted season, are you kidding!!! Harry in Boynton and Pago Pago Trojan, you IGNORANCE as regards Coach Shannon being black is pityfull in this day and age. It would be a welcome site one day and not have to see something regarding race, but I know that it will never happen, because unlike the players that coach Shannon inherited that will be gone, you, Pago Pago and others like you who have deep rooted biases (and you thought the legacy of coach Coker was deep) have unlimited eligibily to be bafoons and morons.

We don't need FAIR- WEATHER fans. You're a BUM. I guess if you move to California, you'll be a USC fan. What a DUMB statement, and no one listens to band wagoners anyway. Have fun freezing your tail off, lol.

QUIT FREAKING PEOPLE. For Pete's sake, you ALL want INSTANT results. We've only LOST 1 conference game, and to a UNC team that isn't that bad, and even with Kyle's mistakes, we still could've won the game, which should tell you that we eliminate a few things, and we're a good team. NEW COACH, NEW SYSTEM, it takes some time people, so quit B--CHING, and show these guys SUPPORT.

Number Eight, Could not have said it any better.

We all were hoping that Randy would come in and we would blow everyone out of the water on our way to a National Championship! The reality is, that the old team is still here and have no desire to win or at the least, play up to their caliber. I just hope that our commitments see this as well and do not turn on the Canes in the event that they do not finish well. I hope they see that some of our true freshman are playing better than some of the seniors and know that they can make the same difference.

Not sure which 'Canes fans you've been talking to but anyone who has been paying attention knew that this was not going to be an NC year.

Also just as the players need to gain experience as well as confidence in their abilities, this is a new (read: young) coaching staff that needs to gain experience as well. Both the players and coaches equally share the blame in what this season has become.

We only have a PART of a real team right now. Until Coker's players, who have suffered through multiple changes in assistant coaching personnel (Look at Kyle Wright, he's had a different OC every year! No wonder he's confused and probably wishes he stayed in California!) and Coker's lackadaisical attitude for 2-4 years. We just aren't going to do much with these kids. It will be 2009 before we see any great improvement.

Everyone's sick of this lousy football the team has been playing the last few years, but this mess will take 3-5 years before it starts looking much better.

"the players do not trust that they are good players " To think they went down 27-0 in the first half against North Carolina because of the above statement is about as ludicrous an excuse I have heard in some years. What we have here is a coach who was part of the problem and i doubt part of the solution.

The majority of the coaching staff has coached at the NFL and college level as well as played at both levels. AND yes, UM had a chance at the NC just as well as Florida, USC, Michigan, Wisc.,etc. Look at our record in 1998 and then in 1999. If you ever walk into a season not hoping that this is your year, then your right, YOU are not the Canes fan I was talking to!

At some point I have to believe that the preponderance of the posters on this forum know little to absolutely nothing about coaching changes in sports. It is about PRODUCTION and Coker and his staff mainly the offensive side of the ball did not PRODUCE! The coach canít play the game for the team, he can only prepare them. At what point between Coker getting fired and Shannon taking over as head coach did any of you non believers think that the Canes were going to be any better than what they were last year? The Canes have the same garbage player personnel from Cokerís lackluster regime with the exception of Graig Cooper (new), Darnell Jenkins (return from injury) and Sam Shields the only guys making big time plays for PRODUCTION. Three guys canít win by themselves! As for coaching goes, the lethargic, non PRODUCING offense of last year that everyone cried about and said needed to change has changed! They only averaged 19.5 points per game and the highest reception average was only 15.7 yards per catch which is not what Canes fans are familiar with (referring to the big play championship teams of the past). As for this year, in only five games the offense is averaging 25.3 points per game and the highest yards per catch average is 20. For a defensive minded coach, thatís damn better than what Coker accomplished and with nearly the same talent. Now, like Randy said, as coaches we have to DEEEPROOOGRAME THE MIDSET OF OUR PLAYERS FROM THINKING LIKE LOSERS! Shannon did not inherit a championship caliber team like Coker did. He inherited a team full of mediocre talented individuals recruited by Coker! He is playing the role of Mr. Fix it and the Canes are for one showing promise and the offense has produced a hell of a lot more big plays than the previous three years combined. Granted, Kyle and Kirby both suck but who else can Shannon play at QB? He has no other experienced personnel that can play the position at this time and that position is 100% why the Canes are not (5-1) and ranked in the top 25. Give Shannon another year or two before you quit on him. The comeback performance that was displayed against North Carolina was something Canes fans have not seen in quite some time now, HEART! I will take that over anything the past Coker teams displayed. If anything quit on those sorry ass (0-5) Dolphins!
Just like this says think about the number of recruits that randy already has landed for next season. things are changing. it took Jimmy and Davis 3 years to turn things around. i think like many other ex-players think randy is the perfect fit.

WOW! UNC isn't that bad, what dream world are you living in???? They were on a 4 game losing streak and ranked at the bottom of the college football world. Maybe they're not that bad when compared to the Canes.

Well Vegas among others would disagree with you re: USC, UF, etc., but good for you and your crew of Superfans, none of the reasons you listed would justify NC aspirations this year to any reasonably intelligent 'Canes fan.

Have you paid attention to 'Cane football over the years or do you just keep track of records? Very few if any parallels that matter can be drawn between this and last years coaching staff, squad, etc. and '98/'99's.

Sure Canes fans know how to spell:

D-E-F-E-A-T L-O-S-S B-A-D

I'll keep my bad spelling and winning season thank you.

Although you might be surprised to know that I agree with your comments about the big-10. Its Wolverines, Buckeyes and also-rans. I also agree with you that the current Buckeyes would come completely unstuck if they had to play in the pac-10 or ACC. They will NOT win a championship this year, even if they get there. I don't hold out a lot of hopes about them winning a bowl game either.

To be quite honest I am a sports fan first and foremost and a team supporter second. I appreciated the Gators win over the Buckeyes last January and was the first to admit the better team won. I also firmly believe the far superior team LOST in the Canes / Buckeyes championship match a few years ago. The pass interference call denying the Canes a win was the most ridiculous I have ever seen - before or since!!!

Just like to wind up you CANES fans from time to time!!!

What Larry Coker curse? Shannon is the coach, this is shannons team! If the players do not trust the coach it is the coach's fault. Not the previous coach.

They hired Shannon due to his personal story, not his ability. I like Randy, I enjoyed watching him play and I am pleased that he got this far but he is not ready. They should have hired the coach from Texas Tech. His offensive scheme is awesome.
