Why are our local kids leaving Las Cruces? That was the question many asked when yet another high school football player from the area - that being Zach Daugherty from Onate - committed to the University of New Mexico instead of his hometown school, New Mexico State.

We've picked up some good local kids and lost some too. To the ones we've lost, MWC is perceived to be a better conference as well. Any school except NMSU is somewhere else, appealing to youngsters itching to get out of the city.

If the best Las Cruces players are going elsewhere, we should be looking hard at the best players around the state.

The old staff,(Mumme) made a less than half hearted effort at recruiting local kids. I know of several local high school standout athletes that were interested in walking on. They were invited to attend a "meeting" to discuss the upcoming tryout. When they arrived for the "meeting", they were told it was the actual tryout. These young men had to perform the 40 yard dash, shuttle run, bench press, squat and several other agility tests. Several boys had just arrived after being in class, eating lunch and working out at the gym. They believed they were just going to a "meeting" and not the actual tryout. All of these boys did what they were asked to do, but not a single one of them were asked to come back. It was a joke and an insult to these young men. I feel this "tryout" was done just to make Mumme and his staff look like they were interested in local boys. Hopefully, Mr. Walker, will be more professional than the past coaching staff when it comes to local or state athletes.

NMSU has no president after more than a year, and the deans of its colleges are fleeing faster than new deans can be hired, yet NMSU sports continues to dominate the "news."

these kids aren't local heroes. yes, they played a mean game of football, but that does NOT qualify anyone as being a hero, for god's sake.

Pee J doesn't have a life of his own or a sports team worth the time for him to blog about. His mother cooks, cleans and wipes up after him.

Must be sad to be him and even sadder to be his mom.

Let the kids be kids, if they want to leave like all young adults do let them go. When the footbal program at NMSU starts winning and building a solid fondation then the local kids may stay. And lets be honest when is the last time you heard a local kid make a name for himself playing football at UNM. I just hope the use the opportunity to get and education, which is free. Until then, it is what it is.

If you want to get an education you're not going to get one in Las Cruces.

Depends upon how you define "local" I suppose...
Brian Urlacher(Lovington), Hank Baskett(Clovis) are a couple that come to mind right off the bat.

And you're right, they are actually going up there to allow football to fund their education.
Not a bad tradeoff.

When college football becomes bigger than high school football in LC, then they'll stay. As for those who are going to UNM---You are now the enemy.
