The reality of last year was that we were the single worst program in the Big Ten. For me that was super frustrating because those fans who had cried, moaned, predicted and threatened regarding the program under Coach Mason always and universally had claimed that changing coaches would NOT cause us to become not only the worse team in the Big Ten, they had made literally dozens of other totally false claims about the benifits of a coaching change.
For one example, look at attendance and the willingness of the fans to stay at a game until the end. Interest in the Gophers has not spiked, it has faded away considerably. Thus, all this team and program can do now is to win games. No amount of talk from the totally discredited 'Brew Crew', coaches or media is going to fool or hype anyone, anymore. Now, they have to deliver. 3-0 is the very best this team could do to this date. It is perfect. Yet, it does sadden me to think what the stadium openning will be like next year as the losses pile up. Not being on Kool Aid I can see that this team is better than the team last year and gives any Gopher fan many reasons to believe we will be better again in the near future if the academic, legal and NCAA cops are kept at bay. A big 'if'. My best guestimate is that we are still some years away from being a middle Big Ten program if everything continues to improve at this rate and the various cops stay away from our door. The Indiana game will tell us a lot more but my guess is that we are not any sort of bowl team yet even with this easy schedule. 3-0 is where we are at and that is better than and other possible record we could have. |

1 You truly are a loon. Your unbelieveable obsession with Glen Mason is bordering on being truly frightening. This team is 3-0. Enjoy it. They aren't Ohio State, Michigan, or Wisconsin yet, but they could be. It may actually be 5-10 years before any long term consistency is established, but hopefully when it is, it is consistency in the National rankings, not the middle of the Big Ten. Mason had more than 10 years to get us there and did not do it. He was more concerned with himself and with somehow getting the Ohio State job, than with building this program into a National power. He truly thought that if he kept a traditional doormat in the middle of the Big Ten pack, that someone would give him a better job. Didn't happen. He's gone buddy!! Move on and try to embrace the future. It can't be any more mediocre than the past, and it just might get better. |

1 You guys think we are on the verge of great things. Let me know when we get there. I enjoyed our team under Mason more than the Brewster teams because the Mason teams were better football teams. They won more games and more important games. That was fun. Yesterday was less fun. Last season was less fun. We are farther from the Rose Bowl now than we were under Mason. Let me know when a Brewster team goes 10-3 and I will agree with you that we are closer to being a top team. Until then, we are a worse program trying to get better. Those are the facts as shown by our record under Brewster.'Yes', reality does suck when compared to Kool Aid. Such is life. |

Does a torrent of name calling make you feel better about yourself? A university is a place where ideas are tested against other ideas. You can always tell a real university style thinker by that standard. A fear of contrasting ideas is a sure sign of a weak mind and weak charecter.

You might be the most negative, miserable person posting here but you are right, you are entitled to your opinion such as it is. The rest of us are also entitled to ours. I respectfully disagree with you about Mason's teams being fun to watch. They never once, not once won a big game. Their defenses were horrible and never got any better over the course of ten freaking years. Mason did not want to be here and it showed. You enjoyed the Texas Tech debacle? You enjoyed the Wisconsin collapse and debacle? That is only two of them, there were many, many more. Now, I have already seen signs of improvement from last year to this year. That is encouraging. Do they need to get better? Yes, a lot better. Will they? Jury is still out. It is much better than watching that arrogant jerk Mason blow lead after lead. Why don't you ask the high school coaches in MN what they think of that a hole? And them ask them how Brewster and his staff have treated them. I have already talked to coaches in one horse towns out my way that have met Brewster and have had a staff member stop at their schools and talk to them. Mason created a very hostile environment in MN, the coaches hated him and he treated them lousy. Do you think just over a year is a fair chance for a coach? You gave Mason 10 freaking years and he never got any better. In fact if he had coached last year, he would have had the same record and he would have had the 100th ranked recruiting class. You flat out do not understand anything about football. I still think you are Mason's brother-in-law or lover or maybe even Mason himself. If the Gophers make you so fricking miserable, quit watching, reading and posting about them. I intend to quit reading your posts and advise everyone else to do the same. There is nothing of value in any of them. I will not giver Brewster a free pass but I am willing to give him half as long as Mason had, five years so his first real recruiting class would be juniors if they had been redshirted which they were not because Mason left a dreadfully bare cupboard. To all the other posters, please excuse my rant. |

Who is miserable? Not me. I would just much prefer to have the team win games.
Amazingly, you wrote: "They never once, not once won a big game." That is such an inaccurate and silly statement that I just hardly know what to say. I personally very much remember three HUGE wins at Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan. I also enjoyed bowl wins against ranked Oregon, Alabama and Arkansas. I enjoyed big wins against Wisconsin, Iowa and every other Big Ten team. The impossible win that Cupito gave us against Purdue was a ton of fun for me. It would seem to me that any Gopher fan would rather watch wins than losses, but you seem to be the exception. If you think Brewster has all this support you are talking about you really should look around the stadium and notice the huge numbers of empty seats. As for not reading my posts, please don't. If you are incapable of noticing any of the big wins we had under Mason, you sure are not going to learn anything from me. |
||||
|
Not very many big wins in ten long years buddy. As to the empty seats, maybe you should do a little research on the attendance during the reign of the incompetent Mason before you speak too loudly.
|
||||
Franklin, I think you are wrong when you say, "You might be the most negative, miserable person posting". I'm sure there are worse than "The Loon", I'm just having trouble pinpointing who". |
||||
I love it! Ha! Ha! Good one! I had forgotten that fellow. Course I think he has a screw loose whereas Loon is just a sad sack. |
||||
Another thing. You constantly rave about the great Mason, tell me then, why are we starting nearly all freshmen on the o line? Who left us in that kind of shape? Mason, thats who. A large part of the game is the o line and d line and we are left with nothing! Nothing! That is on your brother-in-law, Mason. We are quite short of skill players too, whose fault is that? The great 10 year loser Mason, thats who. |

I have never raved about Mason in my life. Indeed, I have never raved about any coach in my life. What I have said repeatedly is all the big promisses about the program without Mason have all turned into garbage. If you would like me to list a couple of dozen I will do so again.
You have what you said you wanted, no more Mason. Be happy with what you are getting in his place in spite of the new football stadium. I'm not happy to be hoping for a couple of Big Ten wins. Attendance is down and I can not remember when interest in the Gophers has ever been lower, expectations so dismal. If however, you expect me to join you in thinking the program is in better shape than it was four years ago when this "Fire Mason" stuff first became so wide spread, you can forget it. The wisdom of undercutting our coach at that time struck me as stupid. We now have what I predicted. |

Hey (mason)Loon, (mason) I (mason) don't (mason) think (mason) that (mason) you (mason) can (mason) see (mason) how (mason) obsessed (mason) with (mason) Glenn (mason) Mason (Mason) you (mason) really (mason) are (mason).

Loon - the trouble with all those big wins you recited is a large chunk of them didn't all happen in the same year. I also agree with Franklin Adams post about our current state of experience on the roster. We have marginal talent outside of Decker/Weber and no position on the chart that has the luxury of depth.
Brewster has a lot to prove still, but Mason wasn't replenishing the talent pool his last couple years and it shows in the lack of Seniors and Juniors contributing today. |

I was there the last few years where we left Coach Mason with no contract. I did warn that once a coach has only one or zero years left on his contract that he would not be able to recruit. Indeed, we took it right down to zero days left on his contract with all the assistant coaches out on the market looking for a new job instead of recruiting. Then, in order to get the new stadium our brillent AD signed Mason up for more years with the full intention of firing him once the stadium deal was done.
Sorry, the Gopher program was a mess for the last couple of years as Maturi tried to have his cake (the new stadium) and eat it too (fire Mason). Now we have Brewster and his take on recruiting "speed, speed and more speed" no matter what kind of students that will produce. Let me know when the Maturi stategy for improving the Gopher football program produces results. I have seen nothing I admire for the past four years. His recent two year extension on his contract is another in the endless string of defeats for our football program. Much to my dismay, Wisconsin does it right when it comes to football, Minnesota gets it wrong most every time. Cutting the feet out beneath Coach Mason two years before we fired him was just stunningly stupid. The Badgers hired their new coach before they promoted his predecessor. Smooth, efficient, professional. Overall, I have no idea how we get out of the mess Maturi has made of our program. Keep in mind, this is what you have wanted for years. I wanted stability and the new stadium. Sorry, we are reaping what you guys have wanted and I think the days of any sort of quality wins are behind us for the forseeable future. I hope we can beat Indiana in a couple of weeks and avoid the basement again, but your ability to blame each of our Big Ten losses on a coach you worked so hard to undercut for years is going to seem less and less credible with each defeat. |

1 Who recruited the players that were accused of rape last year and kicked off the team. Which Brewster recruits have been indicted and jailed? Or accused of crimes? Or kicked out of school? How many recruits did Mason lose do to academic problems? You are nothing but an appologist for Mason. Not a Gopher fan in any way shape or form. You of course will deny that but it is easy to tell what the truth is. You loved Mason and you hate Brewster, you do not care a whit about the team, you are stuck on one agenda and that is that. It is painfully obvious to me and everyone else. |

2 The Big Ten Network has assigned Glen Mason to be an Analyst for the Ohio State / Minnesota game next Saturday. That will be great for a while. For the first half, Mason will be on top of his game, giving expert analysis and it will be great to watch. But during the second half, once the coaches make some halftime adjustments, Mason will have trouble comprehending these adjustments, will panic, and will say and do the wrong things. This will make it really hard to watch the second of half of this game. Mason, has always struggled in the second half. |
