”the Hornets Nest”
Nicknames of America’s great sports arenas, even our strongest of intellectuals will concede; are and have been originated and absorbed, by their surrounding environments. And in Ole Miss and Oxford’s early developments nothing left its mark as the Battle of Shiloh, which was fought to protect Mississippi’s northern borders, securing rail-lines and river-ports from Memphis and Vicksburg. And nothing defines Shiloh as the name “Hornets~Nest”. Hornets nest is a name which rebels, in the huge and powerful “Army of the Mississippi; gave to an area of concentrated yankee forces in a sunken road lined with native sapling trees. This name was given by rebel field observers whom noted that the massive rifle shots resembling angry hornets flying through the surrounded union positions. Many union solders also stated, to the rifled bullets; even sounding, like a giant hive of swarming bees’. But, even then the yankees’ still held their ground till late afternoon, only surrendering; after the rebel’s sixty-two cannon ‘Point-Blank’ volleys aided rebel infantry advancements. This two day battle reviled as many dead as the European Battle of Waterloos, but the differences in this Civil WAR and the Napoleonic War is that there were twenty more Waterloos to come.. Even the notorious General Sherman; replied ”Shiloh”, when asked which battles of all battles, he fought was the bloodiest and most sanguinary of the Civil War. After this great battle, who most consider lasted another six to eight months,(till the fall of Corinth) thousands of gray and blue solders were transported to Oxford and the historic Lyceum. The Lyceum, just steps from Vaught-Heminway Stadium, was converted into a military hospital to treat the sick and dieing. Shortly, thereafter; the future President, General Ulysses S. Grant set up his headquarters with many of his presidential staff and aids along this historic Circle in Oxford.
Yet, today encamped in the Grove, with expectations of new campaigns, football fans again hear drums and distant horns echoing from Vaught-Hemmingways walls, with Rebel Yells (Are You Ready???) reverberating from deep within our HORNETS~ NEST !!
Even Houston Nutt while at Arkansas stated on ESPN that he knew he was going into "A Hornets Nest" after a 38-16 , 1999 drumming of his nationally ranked Razorbacks in the late nineties in Oxford's Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
