Recruited Roger Mason too late? Good Council is only 10 miles from campus and Mason led all DC area scorers. AS A JUNIOR!! How is it that UMD recruited him late? Pathetic. The day Billy Hahn left was the day the program died.

Same ol crap!! We will be talking about the same ol crap this time next year as well.

Screw you, Rickterp. If you don't like it, go root for another team. 100% guarantee MD is in the NCAA's next year. Case closed.

"Recruiting to blame for Terps' recent woes?"

The question is fair enough, the examples you point to are poor.Would Beasley have qualified? The Rudy Gay reference is probably the worst one to use.Are you at all familiar with the recruitment of Gay?Do the Beltway Ballers and a certain 25.000 check ring a bell?Apparently it did with the NCAA,since they legislated the rule barring club team scrimmages after Calhoun's stunt.Believe it or not this wasn't even the most underhanded part of his recruitment. If you really want to explore this issue, how about you compare MD's admission standards to other public and private institutions.

All we can do now is wait 'til next year- like 8 other ACC programs. I'm hoping that Gus Gilchrest and Shane walker manage to get some PT next year- they're needed.

I don't know if he's a PG, but I hope Bobby Maze can help there. Vasquez seems like he'd be better at SG or SF and Hayes seems destined to be little more than a designated 3 pt shooter- he's no PG.

Maybe Adrian Bowie can develop there too.

THE LIST COULD GO ON AND ON.....MARYLAND COULD HAVE A TOP 10 OR 15 PROGRAM EVERY SINGLE YEAR JUST BASED ON THE TALENT FROM BALTIMORE ALONE......THOSE ARE JUST A FEW NAMES WHO COULD HAVE HELPED MARYLAND EXCEL...

People can make all the excuses they want. What Gary has done is a disgrace. It's not about winning a National Championship. He's taken a school that he had built into a consistant sweet 16 participant and turned it into an NIT also ran. The question becomes when is the lapdog media going to take him to task??? He's never been able to adequately replace Patsos,Hahn and Dickerson as his 3 recruiters/assistants. It's one thing to get out recruited by Duke and UNC. We're getting out recruited by slugs like FSU,Va Tech,Virginia and Villanova!! Throw in the fact that Gary is 63 and his best days are behind him and I wonder what Yow is waiting for. All you have to do is look at Frese and see what a young, great recruiter can do for your program. She runs circles around him and she didn't have the advantage of a sold out building and a National Title banner that he has since failed miserably to build on.

I agree 100%. Gary should spend some time here in Baltimore with local high school coaches who are doing a fantastic job teaching kids the game of basketball under difficult circumstances. Hire a few locals to help recruit, schedule a few early season games in Baltimore. Gary and Baltimore basketball seem to be made for each other- tough, scrappy, never quit basketball.

I don't think anybody expects MD to get to the Final Four frequently or even the Sweet Sixteen more than a few times a decade. However, good basketball teams do not miss the NCAA's more than they make them. Probably the most disappointing thing about recent MD teams is the inconsistency and lack of attention to basics in playing defense and rebounding; not to mention the numerous turnovers. You don't need McDonald's All Americans to rebound or play defense, just heart.

Out recruited by FSU? They haven't made the tournament in 10 years.
VT? last sweet 16, 1967
UVA? Last sweet 16, 1995
Disgrace? Hardly

YOU ARE A JOKE. GARY WILLIAMS CAN'T COACH. YOUR TEAM IS IN THE NIT AGAIN. STOP BRINGING UP ENTRANCE SCORES AND MAKING OTHER EXCUSES. YOU ARE A COWARD AND YOUR OPINIONS MEAN NOTHING BECAUSE YOU ARE A HILLBILLY!

So Nate by your logic Brian Billick should have been the coach of the Ravens for as long as he wanted??? Who's done more for the Ravens as head coach than Brian? And Rich check the recruit rankings the last 4 years. Those teams have whooped our ass. The problem is their coaches are far better at recruiting than coaching. And nobody questions Gary's ability to coach on gameday. It's the players he gets for gameday that's the problem.

I agree with an earlier poster that Maryland basketball has suffered immensely with the loss of several gifted assistant coaches in the past several years.

I don't agree that recruiting is responsible for the Terps' demise. Let's face it, Williams has always preferred the Jay Burson over the Allen Iverson.

Frankly, I attribute the downturn to Williams' inability to resonate with players. Anyone who has watched this team the past few years has witnessed a stunning lack of motivation, purpose, and heart. Moreover, they often lack basic fundamentals.

How often have you seen a team transform from a National Champion to perennial NIT fodder in the course of 6 years without being on NCAA probation?
