Seminole young people are given opportunities very few are privilaged to see. I am glad to see a young man taking advantage of them.
Godspeed Jarrid.

Jarrid,

If you practice what you preach and don't forget your roots you will make a strong and valuable leader. Kudos to you for not only appreciating the value of an education but also not isolating yourself from the rest of society. It would have been so easy for you to remain cloistered in your Tribal Land but you chose the right path. Continued success.

Cheers!

I am outraged. How could the local racists allow 3 positive posts prior to spewing their hatred and crap? You guys are slipping.

Matt just needs company to join his redneck brothers of alchohol abusers.

Jarrid, it's very rare to see a young man already seeing his future at that age. Good luck.

I sure hope you stay true to your word and dont fall into the corruption of the tribe. The Seminoles need someone with a brain on their shoulders for a change to help lead them with a respectable business practice instead of the scum they spew and broken contracts. Good luck to you and make everyone proud.

TO THOSE WHO SAY "COLLEGE FOOTBALL ISN'T WORTH THE COST," I SAY READ THIS ARTICLE VERY CAREFULLY.--LITERALLY MILLIONS OF STUDENTS HAVE RECEIVED ADVANCED EDUCATION BECAUSE OF ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS--AND THESE ARE KIDS WHO LIKELY COULD NOT AFFORD TO GO TO COLLEGE WITHOUT THE SCHOLARSHIPS.--YES, YOU CAN GO TO COLLEGE ON YOUR OWN IF YOU TRULY PERSERVERE (I PAID MY OWN WAY THROUGH FAU ON BORROWED MONEY PLUS 30 HOURS A WEEK WORKING AT PUBLIX--BUT THAT WAS ABOUT 40 YEARS AGO).--HATS OFF TO JARRID SMITH AND HATS OFF TO TED HUTTON FOR YET ANOTHER OUTSTANDING ARTICLE ABOUT FAU SPORTS.--HOPEFULLY THIS ARTICLE WILL MOTIVATE A FEW OF THE READERS TO SHOW UP AND ROOT FOR JARRID AND THE OWLS WHEN THEY PLAY MINNESOTA SATURDAY AT 1 PM AT DOLPHIN STADIUM!!--GO OWLS!!

What a great story and Matt who knows nothing about this kid has really stepped up representing the ignorant people of our society. I have had a few opportunities to be around Jarrid and he is a very soft spoken individual that is very commited to his heritage. Matt on the other hand is not even worth talking about.

The article is great. Carlisle Indian School was once prominent in football during the days of Jim Thorpe. I am Apache from Arizona. Football and basketball are very popular on modern Indian Reservations in Arizona, Montana, South Dakota, and New Mexico. There are many state champion teams, but due to racism, they often do not get recruited. That is finally changing. It is great to read of a Seminole who has persevered. I once met Billy Mills, the 10K Olympic Gold Medalist. As for the racist, Matt, he reminds me of Show Low, AZ. The town has a lot of bigotry. But I have found that such racism is rare in Florida. Which explains why most people on this board are not racist like Matt. I have basketball friends from south Florida, and they are not racist at all. I have not had alcohol in seventeen years and run mountains in Colorado, Arizona, or New Mexico as my hobby. I don't understand why Matt would want to be racist when I have Apache relatives who served in WWII to defend the US Constitution. One of them served with the 5th Marine Division (USMC) at Iwo Jima in 1945 - Semper Fidelis.

Don't bet against the black QB in college football. ask pete carol. it's not fair to the fsu fans for the noles to sit xavier lee on the bench behind a guy who he is better than. because he has a tim duncan mantality he gets screwed over and that is why Bobby will retire from fsu not liked very much. they will always love him. but you think chris rix thaught them enough drew is the same qb a screw up waiting tp happen. the O-line sucks why play drewhe can't help you he is a big ten qb not a winning qb

Jarrid, you were destined to be a leader, keep the faith that you are not alone, you must encourage your fellow tribal members of your age to also focus on the future. Youth like you are going to be the leaders for your grandchildren and are a great role model for all Natives. Good luck and God Bless!

what is Jimbo trying to get out of Drew? we all know that drew can beat tems like uab and fiu of the college game. but everyone knows that he can't beat top 25 teams. so why do they keep sticking with him. NFL teams are more intriged by Xavier Lee than Drew. why didn't they make there choice earlier so Xavier could have transfered to a 1AA team so that he could have been drafted like the past few back up QB that fsu had. and they wonder why they can't get the top recruits now.
