The problem with Roosevelt lies with the fact that its residents are hopelessly part of American Black culture. Education is not respected (bookworms get mocked and beat up). Parents have children out of wedlock before they're ready to be decent parents, and the other ones don't supervise their children properly. Some advice: Don't send your kids into the street with the mentality that if someone "looks at you", that's reason enough to assault them! Don't send your kids to school with the mentality that if someone hits you, you have the right to hit them back (a little common sense will tell you that if that excuse is permitted, even bullies and tyrants will say they were "just hitting back" and the safety of all children in schools is forever compromised). Rip that do-rag off your son's head, knock that grill out of his mouth, and have him pull up his pants. Slap those doorknocker earrings off your daughter's ears, rip off that bling she's walking around with, crazy glue her legs together, and teach her to smile and speak like a lady. Don't show your kids that drugs are recreation - take them to the library instead of sipping your 40 on your stoop while they run around like animals. Model being a thinker, a doer, a worker, a student, a friend, a good citizen, nonviolent, sexually responsible....and MOST OF ALL, teach them that when they sit in a movie theater, they need to SHUT THE *@#! UP!!!!!!

But then again, a $150 pair of Nikes can be fun too! Roosevelt is forever doomed!

You think Roosevelt is bad now? Come back in 20 years. These people don't improve. They get worse over time as History has shown.

Oh you need to shut up. You sound like a clown. White students are mocked also if they are smart. Where in the world do you think the word Nerd came from. They are beat up and isolated also. And white girls are made to feel like they are less then nothing if they decide not to conform. You white folks need to get your head out of the sand and start taking a look at your own back yard and become experts about what is going on there before you attempt to act like you are experts about some one elses. But I guess it is easier to deal with someone elses problems then your own. ThHat way can ignore they exist.

Asians and West Indian people say the same exact thing about white Americans and how they do not feel educaton is priority. And how their kids are spoiled and disrespectful and get away with murder and how they think the rules do not apply to them. So shut up because you sound ridiculous and ignorant.

I agree with Mr. Patrick - change has to come from within. The weekend rally is a good start. However, their choice of headliners sends the wrong message. A rap star and NBA players? How are they good role models or examples of success? Rappers only perpetuate a false image of masculinity and rationalizes criminal activity or violence for the sake of "street-cred." Did Papoose earn an undergrad degree? I hope so. Does he rap about women in derogatory terms? I hope not.
Only one in a million people become professional music stars or athletes and luck plays a bigger factor in their success than anyone is willing to admit. How did Judge Mathis go from gang leader to judge? He believed in himself and studied, studied, studied. Luck was not a factor.
They should have featured Dr. Butts (pres of SUNY Old Westbury), or Michael Dyson (author), or Ruth J. Simmons (pres of Brown University). Local successful business owners should be celebrated as role models. Other positive role models could include a teacher, nurse, electrician, lawyer, computer programmer, etc.; all well paying careers that with education and determination just about anyone could achieve.

Not like in the black community. Sorry to disappoint you, but white kids know that the honor class students are the ones that will be more successful in life. Haven't you noticed that in integrated schools, the honor classes are a HAVEN for white kids to escape the jungle created by the black student body? I wish it were different, Lisa. Maybe as a black woman, you will one day have children (AFTER getting married), raise them correctly, and prove me wrong.

I love Roosevelt, but I have to say this is one of the worst communtiys on Long Island as far as crime and murder rates. It's murder rate last year passed Queens, that's rediculous. It needs alot of work.
