Owls have bigger plans after victory in first bowl

Full story: South Florida Sun-Sentinel

The sweat was still on the faces of Florida Atlantic players following their victory in Friday's New Orleans Bowl when the words "national championship" were being spoken by coach Howard Schnellenberger.

Go Owls!!

The only thing that isn't right is a rising star playing in a HS stadium. Get that new stadium built.

Doesn't Smellyburger know that they can't go to a BCS bowl playing in the sun belt. FAU needs more fans, more money, better players, etc..... Can FAU even recruit a 3-star player?

Slow down there "Confused". FAU's program is only 4-5 years old (I think). You just don't walk into a BCS conference your first year. FAU has about 30,000 students, which they need to garner a tradition with, that takes time. Heck, USF can't even get 30,000 to their games, even when they have "sellouts", there are about 20,000-25,000 fans there from opposing teams. FAU has approval to build a 35,000-40,000 seat on-campus stadium. It was roiginally supposed to be a domed (retractable) stadium, but they have since scrapped that idea for an open air stadium. They are following in UCF's footsteps as far as how to garner funding for the stadium on the private side. They should have the stadium ready in a couple of years. As far as recruiting 3-star or higher recruits. As long as they can continue to recruit heavy in that area, they will be fine, Miami/Ft. Lauderdal has an abundance of players they can get, regardless of their "star" rating, they are still quality recruits.

Miami and FSU have 4 star players. I think Miami's QB was a 4 star recruit, I see how that worked out. I'd take Rusty in a heartbeat over any current QB on the 'Canes.

Howard isn't a moron he knows what he's doing. USF wasn't always in the big east, neither was Louisville. Within the next 5 years FAU will be in a BCS conference.

Our first game was in 2001. This was only our 2nd year playing D-1 Football. You're so high on all these other schools name one school who has been to a bowl game and won in only their 2nd year in D-1?

IGNORE "CONFUSED."--HIS NAME SAYS IT ALL.--BUT HERE'S SOMETHING YOU CAN SINK YOUR TEETH INTO.

FAU IS ALREADY GETTING SOME PLAY HERE IN THE AUSTIN AREA.--SOME NEIGHBORS HAVE ALREADY "HIGH-FIVED" ME IN MY GLOWING FAU SHIRT.--THERE'S BEEN SOME FAU TALK ON THE LOCAL ESPN RADIO STATION.--MANY LOCAL LONGHORN FANS KNOW ABOUT HOWARD AND THE JOB HE'S DONE AT FAU.

ONE LOCAL TEXAS FAN WAS NOT IN THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT.--AS HE STARED AT MY FAU SHIRT, I SAID "FAU PLAYS TEXAS HERE IN AUSTIN IN SEPTEMBER."--HE RESPONDED,--"FAU IS A NOTHING TEAM FROM A NOTHING CONFERENCE.--TEXAS WILL BEAT YOUR BOYS BY AT LEAST 50 POINTS!!"--HE MEANT IT!!

I HOPE SOMEBODY IN THE BOCA AREA PASSES THIS COMMENT ON TO FAU'S STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH--COACH SMITH.--I HOPE COACH SMITH POSTS THIS QUOTE IN A PROMINENT LOCATION IN THE WEIGHT ROOM!!--EVERY FAU PLAYER SHOULD READ THAT QUOTE WHILE HE'S PUMPING IRON DURING THE OFF-SEASON.

hey confused, just so you know, im SURE Schnellenbergers' plan is to get out of the sunbelt in a few years. I think he is smart enough to know that they need to be in a BCS conference to have a shot. and Also, FAU does get 3 star recruits, Xavier Stinson is one of them. he was injured this year.

Schnellenberger knows exactly what he is doing. The "word on the street" is Big East in about 2 years, dependent on the continued growth/winning of FAU and also on if the big East Conference can convince its Board to expand -- something they NEED to do aneways. That expansion would then leave room for FAU to come in.

BIG EAST = BCS Conference

In time..= BCS CHAMPIONSHIP

--- Howard knows EXACTLY what he is doing.

I was in New Orleans all week for the game/festivites. It was an amazing experience that we will all remember for the rest of our lives.

Why would the Big East take FAU over UCF. UCF is next in line to go to a BCS conf. According to Oleary, the Big East is the lower tier in the BCS. FAU will probably go to MAC or C-USA within the next 5 years. I don't think the Big East or any other BCS conf will take a school that only draws 10k to a game and a team that barely draws road fans. I think Troy will be leaving the conf before you then you will follow them.

The above statement is inaccurate (as usual). The facts follow:

Attendance Figures (through Dec. 23):

USF (#44)
Accumulated Attendance 319019
Accumulated Percent Capacity 80.98 (NFL stadium)
Average Attendance 53170
Sum Stadium Capacity 393942
# of Games 6

UCF (#48)
Accumulated Attendance 308129
Accumulated Percent Capacity 97.17 (On-campus)
Average Attendance 44018
Sum Stadium Capacity 317017
# of Games 7

And look where FAU is located (#109/#119). Why don't fans go to the games. It's not that far of a drive. I remember when UCF games were in downtown Orlando and we had to drive about 20 miles and it was in the Ghetto. Whoever is in charge of marketing for FAU should be fired. You also had 25k at the bowl game which is OK. They probably went by tickets sold and not attendance which is what all schools do.

To be in the big leagues, FAU needs to get with the program and have more logo things for sale on the web and give aways locally. It is difficult to get FAU logo items, but very easy to find FSU and UF things.

It's the same if you go into a Sports Authority in Tampa or Orlando, you cannot find any UCF/USF logo items in the big chain stores for these respective teams, all UF, FSU and Miami. UCF does have a deal with Barnes and Nobles to provide all merchandise items on-campus, and one store off-campus. Also, all the bookstores surrounding UCF have plenty of merchandise. Does FAU have anything similar to this, if not, they should.
Congrats to the Owls, great season, exciting to watch, as was UCF.

You find UCF stuff all over Orlando (Sports Auth, The mall, Target, Wal-Mart, etc...) but once you leave Orlando it's no where to be found. There is a web site where schools are ranked on how much merchandise is sold. Of course, UF is at the top along with Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio. The problem FAU has is that Boca Raton is not a college town. I think most residents would agree that they don't want a stadium on campus. I bet Boca is going to give them a hard time with permits.

What's so far-fetched about FAU football in the Big East 5-6 years from now? Everyone knows big-time college football is a huge money-maker. Especially those conference title games...the Big East only has 8 teams, and they're already talking expansion. To get that money title game you need 12 teams. Where will the Big East get 4 teams? Well, they'll certainly try to get Notre Dame, which they have in all other sports. But tradition will prevent that. Failing that, they will take from Conference USA and the Sun Belt. Imagine a North-South Big East title game with divisions that look like this:

NORTH: Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Connecticut, W. Virginia, Cincinnatti, Rutgers

SOUTH: Louisville, South Florida, Central Florida, Florida Atlantic, Troy, Southern Mississippi

So while your point that UCF would get taken over FAU, while valid, is kinda empty. The Big East would only expand to get to 12 teams so they could get a title game. I could see the Big East taking UCF (further along), Southern Miss (More history, established fanbase), and even Troy (Better national recognition) over FAU...but unless Notre Dame broke their century-old tradition and joined a conference (Not happening) Who ELSE would the Big East take over Schnellenberger's Owls? Memphis? Army? Tulane? Middle Tennessee? No way.
