Friedgen reluctant to make major changes after upset

Full story: Baltimore Sun 10
Coach Ralph Friedgen said today that it would do more harm than good to immediately make widespread changes to a talented, if underachieving, Terrapins team coming off one of the program's worst losses since ... Full Story

I think it's time for Coach Friedgen to be replaced. The Terps have been getting worst each of the past several years. He doesn't seem to motivate his players and his offensive and defensive mindset seems behind the times. Pay him for his remaining years and find a "winning" coach. Maybe he would be better as a Chef!

There's a major flaw in the first paragraph of this article: that the Terps are talented. They aren't. Ralph's a pretty good coach, but a mediocre recruiter, at best. The team's been showing it ever since Ron Van der Linden's recruits left. Also, and this might be heresy to diehard Terp fans, but I honestly think Ralph's obesity is a turn off to some blue chip recruits and their families. When you're asking your charges to be disciplined, it's an all to apparent hypocracy when you can't even discipline yourself in an area that's life and death important. As a Maryland grad, I find it kind of embarrassing to be honest.

Smart choice Ralph - keep the status quo because obviously it has been working so well these last 5 season. Enough is enough.

Who in the world would Friedgen "change" to anyway? Assuming he's already playing his best players, where does he go? This isn't Florida whose backups are nearly as good as their starters. Friedgen has played his hand and that's all he's got. A lack of quality players is one issue and that speaks directly to his poor recruiting. But, his terrible coaching is the other issue. The man looks completely lost -- and sounds it. The best thing that could happen to the Terps would be for Debbie Yow to cut her losses, show Friedgen the door as quickly as possible, try and salvage whatever she can from this season, and get a head coach who can coach and recruit. The man was successful with someone else's players. He can't beat the little sister's of the poor with his own.

Keys to success is to fire Chris Cosh, should've been done years ago, and bring back Gary Blackney who is a now a secondary coach for UCF. But Friedgen will be too stubborn and too loyal to do so- this is why when Chris Cosh came on board, he had to work with Fridge's staff and couldn't hire anyone he wanted on his staff. Perhaps we can't blame Cosh because of this and Friedgen should be the one to blame. Friedgen's loyalty and stubborness are causing us losses. Personally I believe James Franklin is a great candidate, he's energetic and can recruit. I think he should be given a chance to turn us back around. Ideally, Franklin would be coach and hire Blackney back. Since Blackney left, we haven't had anything that resembles a pash rush, nor are we getting any turnovers on defense. Friedgen's pride or machismo probably got in the way- that's why Blackney and Taffe probably left, which explains the situation we're in right now. I'm sorry to say, but MD blows right now.

Very well put! As a UMD grad I couldn't Agree with you more!
Ralph seems to be suffering from the same illness as the head coach over in the Comcast Center: went to Orange Bowl and figured he could recruit from his desk after that. To that end, let's hope Gary will begin to embrace recruiting trips again and end this pathetic streak of mediocrity

We really need Blackney back. The Terps defense was consistently the best in the conference, but hasn't been the same since. Please fire Cosh!

Cosh was the worst hiring. His defenses were never any good. They only react and grab. Never force an issue, plus you notice alot former receivers playing on defense. What gives? Ralph is done. He admits year after year he can not reach his players.
SKIP HOLTZ is the answer.

We put the ball into our most talented players only a few times (Scott and Heywood-Bey) and our defense has zero sacks in 2 games and we never Blitz?

Not hard to figure out the players are not the big problem in College Park right now.
