Butler climbs to No. 16 in AP poll, IU drops to 15th

Indiana University is still the state's top-ranked team in college basketball. Barely. Butler's championship in last week's Great Alaska Shootout shot the Bulldogs from 22nd to 16th in The Associated Press Top ... Full Story

Enjoy your #15 ranking. It won't be long before your team makes it clear to the AP voters that it isn't a top 25 team and has NO chance of a title run.

As I said yesterday when this story was posted, Butler is a better team than IU. Xavier is a better team right now than IU. IU is more talented than either of those schools, but until they start playing together as a team, talent only gets you so far. Sampson said as much after the game. Hoosier fans just need to give it some time. I think they will enjoy watching how this team comes together as February approaches and then into the Big Ten Tournament and the NCAA. I also think last weekends loss is more positive than negative. Who cares about one game 5 games into the season? Nobody should if you know anything about how successful programs/teams in college basketball fare over the season. Means nothing.

And to "IU SUX" above - not sure if that was guided strictly by anti-IU feelings or what, but isnt it a little too early to be so angry even for Iwhini fans? I mean the last thing you should be worried about is IU. I'd be worried about breaking .500 over there in Champaign. Heres a tissue Iwhini fan.

On a much much more serious note.....I just heard that Sean Taylor passed away this morning down in Miami. That is so unbelievably sad. Just yesterday they said he was improving and now he is gone.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He just had a newborn baby girl. He was only 24 or 25. My God. It makes you realize how insignificant everything else is in the end.

IU basketball is full of fraud. They are NOT a top 25 team. Butler would beat them by 20+ points.

You are reinforcing the opinion most people in the state have of your school.

Way to go Butler! While I follow both teams, this Butler squad is a real team and not a collection of stars. Didn't the IU coach mention in the loss that too many players were standing around waiting for a one on one situation? I think both teas will improve over the year.

And you think it will change? Come on, Gordon is just doing things for his draft highlight reel and will be there for one or maybe two years before he throws his hat into the draft ring.

Team means nothing when your draft rank is on the line. Score the most points, make the tough shots instead of passing to the open man, ME FIRST. It won't change at all.

Butler, on the other hand, has a bunch of guys who will probably never be drafted. They have no reason to hog the ball and so they play as a complete team.

You might want to give up the Iwhini mantra after all the crying & whining Gordon did during the Xavier game. I thought the kid was going to cry.

Butler should probably be ranked even higher. They are one of the most fundamentally sound teams I've ever seen. I can't wait to see them beat OSU at Hinkle this Saturday night.

Let's see --- Butler beat three good teams in Alaska to win the championship. I.U. beat cupcakes until they played a good team and then lost big time. And, I.U. is still ranked above Butler. That tells you all you need to know about ratings. As one poster said, "They don't mean jack squat!"

I think Butler should be ranked ahead of IU. As an IU fan, I'm not sure what else Butler had to do to get ranked higher.

However, all the other hoopla about IU not being a top 25 team, being overrated, criticizing Eric Gordon... it's all a bunch of gibberish. I'm not surprised by the comments, although I'm curious if someone is trying to make ISU look bad, given they really have no place to talk.

Are you trying to represent Butler? You mention the great kids going to the school, the same ones who post comments like yours? So when your team is doing well, that means it's time to criticize IU? Really?

I imagine the true Butler student who believes in their school and program doesn't need to resort to such tactics. Is Butler's program truly defined by measuring up to IU in some way? That's the impression you give, which only points to an inferiority complex.

Please make sure you come back to the forum when you lose and your ranking goes down. Your pompous attitude will be welcomed at that time as well.

Maybe being even keel would work better for you?

Does it matter? Because no one in Indiana will be able to watch the game. I was a fan who never missed an IU, Butler, Purdue, and other local team when they were on TV. Now you can not get a local game. I have more time to get things done..... and will never watch another basketball game again!!!!!!!!!!

As a Butler alum and lifelong IU fan, I think your comment is a) completely unnecessary and distasteful and b) incorrect.

IU has great talent, and if their coach can get them to play like a team, they've got great potential in the post season. They may or may not belong in the Top 25 at present, but we all know rankings don't mean much. It's nice to have two Indiana schools in the Top 25 though.

As far as Butler, well if you are the norm, I'm glad I didn't go there, what a joke of an education and sports program.

I dont get why all the people in Illinois think we care what they have to say. THIS IS AN INDIANAPOLIS NEWSPAPER WEBSITE. ITS NOT ABOUT ANYTHING ILLINOIS-RELATED AT ALL. So why do they come in droves to express their feelings knowing no one cares? DO they spend as much time on ACTUAL ILLINOIS NEWSPAPER WEBSITES?

I dont know about the rest of you folks from Indiana, but if I ever lower myself to the point that I feel I need to search out another city's (forget another STATE!) newspaper website, read stories I care nothing about, and then go as far as to post garbage about a story I care nothing about please someone put me out of my misery.

Pretty humorous the irony in such a person calling people who actually care about the story's subject matter "idiots".

Get a life people over there. Its embarassing.

Yeah yeah I know you are going to respond......what else is there to do in your mom's basement at 11am in the morning. Get a job. Get a life. Keep them both to yourselves.

WE DONT CARE!!!!!!!!
