This is the absolute best fit for Hawaii. He in an incredible coach. I was fortunate enough to play for McMackin in 99 and he was without a doubt the one coach I had the utmost respect for. His humbleness and ability to make you feel important truly transcended that team and I am excited that he will make a differene in many other student athlete lives for years to come at Hawaii.

UH way overpaid the dude. He is a bottom of the basement WAC coach. People here live a life of denial and it is costing the tax payer big time. UH is a languishing third-tier school. It is going nowhere because of lack of leadership from the admin. and the Legislature.

Ok Eric, since he was your coach in 99, why did he suddenly leave for Texas Tech after just one year? Where does the "loyalty" show itself on the coach by leaving the players so quickly?

I don't know McMackin on a personal level, but I believe he will be a great coach for UH and will make UH leadership look like geniuses for hiring him. Based on the info I've been able to aggregate (from newspapers, Internet, blogs,...) and his interviews, McMackin is humble, has great character (integrity, work ethic, intelligence, humility, dedication,...). Hi is also very knowledgeable about football and effective at teaching the game to players.

Two key factors people may be underestimating are McMackin's leadership abilities and interpersonal skills, both which can get people to perform far above their perceived abilities and/or potential. Additionally, McMackin's leadership and interpersonal skills will be invaluable to recruiting players with talented players with good character versus just talent.

I'm hoping for an 8-4 or 7-5 during the Warriors' first year with McMackin as the HC. Anything above that will be frosting on the cake. I'm excited about the 08 season and ready to cheer on McMackin and the Warriors! I STILL BELIEVE IN THE WARRIORS!

I believe Mack was at Texas Tech for three years. He left UH in '99 after one year with JJ's blessing because Texas Tech doubled his salary.
I am thinking at least the Hawaii Bowl after the Warriors play one of their toughest schedules ever.
My concern is that he finds a high quality line coaches w/NFL experience and good teaching skills

You know, I used to think so, but having witnessed first hand, how FEW people can actually do certain jobs, and being in a business that pays tens of millions to a single person, I can completely see why the 1.1 is worth it. Jerry Glanville himself, God bless him, couldn't get our D to top 30 potential. But Coach Mack has gone 21-5 over two season, and in both years, has brought our D to the 30s. If 1.1/year brings back at least twice that much in ticket sales, merchandise, etc, then doesn't that make good business sense?

Mom cannot face the truth. Most cannot. I tell the truth because i find having to tell untruths is weak and pathetic. UH way overpaid the dude to coach a minor league team. What a joke.

Hmmmm, did you know that when Coach McMakin came back to Hawaii last year, he took a pay cut from what he had made back in '99? Not many would do that and should reveal some of his class and heart for Hawaii.
