Thank you, Adam Herbert. Whenever I tell people I'm from Indiana or have a degree from IU, they ask me, "Isn't that where Kelvin Sampson coached?" Thanks for propping up my resume. Here is a big raspberry for you--phtttttttttttttttttttttt!

Security makes a student take off his "Bring Back Bobby" t-shirt a few games ago, but lets our ex-prez wear this outfit in public? And librarians get the rap for being bad dressers? Sheesh. Congrats to our team for continuing to show class on the court during this unclassy period in our school's basketball history.

Interesting that this is a dumbed-down versition of the previously written articles. One in the Florida paper. And the one done last night and posted online for the IndyStar.

Where, oh where, is the information that Herbert explained the general selection process? He didn't say that IU followed it. Herbert then said that he had 6 hours of discussions with Sampson and the Board of Trustees prior to the Sampson hire. Ferguson, of the Board of Trustees was quoted as saying that that did not fairly present his involvement. Ferguson went on and said that he talked to the group for about an hour after the fact. Herbert doesnt deny directing Greenspan to hire Sampson. He just gives misdirection and avoids the IndyStar reporters. Oh, well, there is enough blame for all including Greenspan. It is clear they didnt contact the NCAA about the sanctions prior to the hire. And they didn't oversee correctly Sampson for about nine months until the NCAA report was due. Stewards of the public trust? Pathetic.

Now the IndyStar is backing off of the story. Why? Is anyone going to verify, in writing, that the Compliance Office at IU was asleep at the post?

Scampson deserved a second chance, but not at a top flight school, like IU. As you can tell from Hobo Hebert's commments,"this became a value hire for us," the role of college Presidents is all about the economics and has little to do with anything else. Of course, in this article, Hobo Hebert, did his part in passing the blame to Greenspicable, which is what everyone associated with hire is now required to do. No one really had anything to do with hiring Scampson...he just showed up one day and started coaching and everyone thought, "Well, he is here, so I guess we'll pay him and hope for the best." That way, if anything goes wrong, we all can claim we had nothing to do with hiring him. Greenspicable needs to resign, and if he doesn't, McBobblehead needs to fire him. Then, IU will still need to self-impose some sanctions, to call off the heat of the NCAA.

"When you look in the broader scheme of things, it was worth giving him a second chance."-Former IU President Adam Herbert

Yeah. Perhaps so, Dr. Herbert. But after he violated your trust did your successors and Greenspun and the IU Trustees then give him a third and a fourth chance?

I.U. is just a joke, they never wanted Sampson, or Davis for that matter. They have finally gotten one of the Old IU cronies in to Coach the talent someone else has recruited. Jock itch, opps I mean Dakich, come on what a JOKE. Did we check his record from Bowling Green before he was run out of town. Eric & D.J. finish and get the hell out of Bloomington Basset, Crawford and you others hurry and transfer while you still have some game left ! AJ got screwed and the school should be held responsible for ruining these young Men's lives.....
Then IU can field a team of walk on's to bring back the glory,"Where's Jimmy Chitwood & Damon Bailey when we need them !!

You don't make sense.“My view at the time, and still is, was that when you have a chance to hire someone with his track record, and whose only offense was telephone calls …. When you look in the broader scheme of things, it was worth giving him a second chance.”
You are saying because he was a winning coach, then it was alright to accept the sanctions of the NCAA. The boys want to play ball, not see their dreams whil watching other teams play in the big 10. At least Knight did not get the school any sanctions.

Hey IU, get some cajunas. This whole thing has been one ridiculous panty-wipe handling of a coach who should have never been hired, and THEN should have gotten the boot during the self-report by the school. As the Star reported IU's public blunders have ended up costing millions(in tax dollars even?) for a school and leaders who keep tripping on eachother and covering their fellow behinds. And by the way, all these "crack" administrators make hundreds of thousands of dollars for these terrific executive decisions. Put on some diapers boys, because that's what you should really be wearing until you grow up and deal head-on with people like sampson who think, phone rules, are silly and you still give him a buy. if you pay, you play---by NCAA rules! good ridddance Sampson, and send Greenspan packing with him. where are your standards IU? low indeed.

Go Figure, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Wow, make sure you cover your butt Herbert. I am sure that if you can cover it with your big ego there will be no problem. You said his poor graduation rate does not violate NCAA regulations and that he had to be hired because of all his 20 win seasons. Let me dissect this ? Win at all costs, let me ruin the integrity of IU basketball and everybody work at McDonalds after their career at IU. Oh, and give Sampson a parting gift of 750,000. Good thing you are not still the President at IU or we might be recruiting donors more than basketball players. Maybe I didn't agree with some of the things that Bobby Knight did, but WOW all of a sudden throwing a chair across the court is something I soon will forget.

1. Is there any question regarding the legitimacy of the faculty's call for Herbert to step down because he didn't have the requisite leadership skills and judgment?

2. It seemed to me at the time he was hired that there was pressure to hire a non-white coach at IU (for fear that, otherwise, Mike Davis' de facto firing might appear as a "whitewashing"), and Sampson (despite his huge, glaring flaws) was one of the only proven non-white coaches available. I feel like this is a case where the desire to seem progressive might have made IU choose a person who they would have otherwise run away from screaming. Political correctness took precedence over sound judgment.

Frankly, in retrospect, I wish they would have kept Davis. Maybe he wasn't the best coach, but he wasn't a cheat.

I agree 100%. "A value to us." What a joke! IU was still a topprogram even after Davis jacked it up. Then you hire someone that cheats and does not graduate players. Herbert they should throw YOU out of Bloomington and take Greenspan with you!!

Are you kidding me? Sampson received his 2nd chance when IU signed him and he chose to repeat his offenses, again, in violation of NCAA rules. He knew the rules and chose to ignore them, again. He may have a good heart but he lacks the ability to make good decisions concerning his job as a basketball coach and now he MUST pay the price for that.
