More than 200 inmates incarcerated in federal prisons in Connecticut for crack cocaine offenses could see their sentences cut by an average of 27 months under a plan contemplated by the U.S. Sentencing ... Read more

Are they serious? The law ruined these drug addicts life? Wouldn't the drugs have already ruined their life? This is another attempt at "correcting" one racist form of government with another.

Of course Thornton feels that way.

HE IS BLACK!

WHEN ARE BLACK PEOPLE GOING TO STOP CRYING.

If you asked your average african american to name the ammendment which abolished slavery and what year was it written into the constitution. THEY COULDNT TELL YOU!

TRY IT.

Time to stop whining people, and take responsibility for yourselves.

Once again people blame race, or other people for their own mistakes. I love how people say a law, or inequalities in law, ruined them. Never mind that they BROKE THE LAW!!! They know that if they get caught selling coke or crack that they will go to jail. Stop blaming others and take responsibility for your own actions. Stop blaming your race. It doesn't matter what your race is, if you break the law, you go to jail. If you have money, whether you are black, white or hispanic, you may get lucky with a better lawyer. But, everyone who sells drugs knows its against the law and yet they still do it. Then they cry when they get caught. I say keep them in jail.

Are Yee Daft?!! Let out Crack Head prisoners early, so they can steel my aluminum Gutters and storm windows to buy crack?!!
I dont care what color they are, black, white or pink polka dotted, don't let these people out to rob, and maybe kill, like in Chesire.
Please stop playing the race card, if 86 percent of any color are convicted, then those same 86 percent should stay in jail, and don't try and spin that to me, any other way.
They are in Jail for a good reason.

In 1865 Slavery was abolished in the U.S. by the 13th Amendment to the Constitution and this is from a black woman who grew up on the East End of Bpt many years ago, so I did manage to learn a few things - but this has nothing to do with the laws that are meant to destroy all the lives involved with drugs whether black, white, hispanic or asian! Blacks do get the short end of the stick in every thing, though slavery was abolished in 1865 we are still having to fight for what's rightfully ours including our right to equality, what makes it right to send someone to jail for a shorter period of time just because they are white, trash is trash and it all stinks - fair is fair and no matter who you are you can't get away with doing wrong for long it always catches up to you, white people always act like they are the superior race when they have all these drug addicts and hild molestors lurking in their own backyards but they continue to try and punish black people for crimes that are a lot less serious than theirs, I say leglize all the drugs if you are stupid enough to throw your life away with a crack pipe, then by all means go right ahead and do so, but don't blame black people for your screw ups!! We have enough problems trying to maintain in a society that bought us here to use and abuse and then throw away when they feel like they have had enough!!!

Why don't you try blaming the TRIBAL LEADERS WHO SOLD THEIR PEOPLE INTO SLAVERY? If they weren't willing to sell their people, none of this would have happened and it would be a moot point. MY white ancestors didn't own slaves, we WERE slaves, well, indentured servants anyway. We weren't here in the 1600s, my people didn't come here until the mid to late 1800s. Most of the white people in this country were too poor to own slaves! Go after the tribal leaders' descendents who sold their tribesmen into slavery and the rich fat cats' descendents who bought them, and leave the rest of us alone. Oh and as far as blacks getting the short end of the stick, why don't you tell that to Charles Barkley, Michael Jordan, Samuel Jackson, Oprah, Whitney Houston, Seal, Jay-Z, Beyounce, and all the other rich black people who actually made something of themselves instead of crying "poor me! my ancestors were slaves! give me my mule and my 40 acres, and while you're at it, give me my welfare check and pay all my bills!"? We need to stop living in the past, and start living in the now. Tell (pseudo) Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton to stop playing the damn race card all over the place. "Politcal correctness" is neither political nor correct. All it does is absolve people from taking personal responsibility and perpetuate the myths that it seeks to destroy.

Fact, there are more blacks in prison because more blacks commit crimes than whites. Fact, alot of times, the drug charge comes with other charges. Stop this stuff about racial inbalance. They, and only they, are responsible for their actions and it's outcome.

"Cliff Thorton, executive director of .. Efficacy ... said, "The driver behind this whole thing is money and the glue is race."
True, but in a way Mr. Thorton didn't intend.
Connecticut's drug trafficking is controlled by African American gangs, and they are very protective of the monopoly they hold on their franchise.
It is black-market economics (pun NOT intended), and not bigotry, that explains the statistical realities of arrest, sentencing and conviction. Until that fact is accepted and the driving factors analyzed and attacked for what they are and not what "social justice advocates" wish they were, we'll never solve anyone's problem.

I said it before, and I'll say it again: Prejudice and racism will only go away when people stop letting it have so much power over them. When people like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, and, in *this case*, Cliff Thornton, stop fanning the flames. When people start taking personal responsibility, and learn to grow a backbone where their wishbone is, and stop accepting behavior that isn't acceptable. Easier said than done, I know, but that's the only way it's going to stop. And I think we can ALL agree, it needs to stop.

Lynne B,you claim that your ancestors were indentured servants obviously you don't know the difference from being a slave and a servant. A slave is worked to death and treated like an animal, given scraps that the owner doesn't want and an indentured servant is someone who does work for money and treated with dignity. Jump off your soap boxs and read the article that Thoprton wrote again. It's about inequality. Of course you wouldn't care about these offenders because everything you have I'm sure it was given to you or handed to you on a silver platter because of your skin color. Most of these offenders chose to sell narcotics because of the racial inequality this country still have when they go to get jobs or work.
I agree with you Ava no matter what the skin color is every race should have to abide by the same guidelines.
For all you jackass' that made the comment in regards to African Americans committ more crimes that Whites check your states stats for criminal activity and I bet you'll be retracting that statement. The pedophilia, the crystal myth traffickers, wife murderers, embezzling. I could go on, but I wont. Stop generalizing and help fix the problem. Oh, and ask the African Americans and other minorities how they are getting the drugs in to this country... with the help of those good ole' white people (Congress,Army and Navy. I wish all of you ignorant people would go sit down somewhere with your racist selves. Get a life and stop medling in other people lives.
