While I am an educator in another town, Dr. David Sklarz is an inspiration, well regarded by his colleagues throughout Connecticut as a premiere educator and leader, a highly humane individual who puts the best interests of children first and foremost, and who is dedicated to the professionalism of his staff. From afar, we especially respect his demonstrated commitment to advancing the academic performance and odds for success for those kids who are without the enrichment and extra activities of affluent suburbia or advantaged households. Good luck West Hartford finding a replacement since there is nationally a lack of qualified superintendents - and those available command huge salaries. West Hartford has certainly been one of the model towns that the rest of us all look to, and I hope your town can maintain its high educational quality in the future.

Sklarz is bailing, just like Town Manager Barry Feldman did. He can't take the heat of bad economic times ahead and cuts to the schools and municipal budget in the forecast. It's easy to be a success in good times, too bad he doesn't have the fortitude to deal with the real problems that are coming.

I guess it's nice to be collecting his retirement money, and no doubt he'll join the ranks of his double-dipping colleagues who take on wellpaying consulting and teaching jobs while "in retirement".

As for advancing fine academic performance - we are doing ok - but we have definitely dropped in the standings. The system is definitely bigger but not necessarily better.

So long David, but before you go maybe you can get your staff to take some pay cuts, it would really help us out. Maybe you can refuse the huge pay increase that you just got too.

AS AN ADMINISTRATOR I AGREE THAT ADMINISTRATORS ARE OVER PAID. THE ONES THAT DO THE REAL WORK ARE THE SECRETARIES ,PARAPRAOFESSIONLAS AND TEACHERS. IF THEY ARE PAID APPROPRIATELY I CAN SEE THE ADMINISTRATORS GETTING A LI\TTLE EXTRA FOR THE NIGHT MEETINGS.
AS IN ALL BUSINESSES THE KILLERS ARE THE BENEFITS.
WE HAVE TO FIND A BETTER WAY OF FUNDING EDUCATION AND HEALTH CARE.
THE INSURANCE COMPANIES AND BIG BUSINESS SHOULD BE RUNNING THIS COUNTRY.
LOOKS LIKE DR. SKILARZ DID NOT DO HIS HOMEWORK WHEN IT CAME TO PROVIDING THE SPACE NESSARY FOR GROWING NEIGHBORHOODS?
WHOSE JOB WAS THAT?
HIS OR THE ASSISTANT SUPT. NARDONE THAT JUST LEFT?
I BELIEVE YOU ARE RIGHT HE IS SEEING THE WRITING ON THE WALL.
MAYBE NARDONE SAW IT FIRST??

I had the misfortune of reporting to Sklarz, a self promoting salesman just like Professor Harold Hill, of the play: "the Music Man." West Hartford in the mid to late 19990s was his targeted River City filled with well meaning but naive BOE members and a self-serving Town Manager who was delighted that the new Superintendent understood his (Feldman's) superiority and egomanical need to call the shots and pull the Council Strings. Poor Superintendent John Battles, BOE President Lonnie Brick and BOE member Pat Genser who valiantly tried to effectuate the much needed changes to the "Leave it to Beaver" mentality that permeated West Hartford under Feldman's suffocating reign. Sklarz, to his credit, knew his limitations, and therfore made sure that far more talented and able administrators propped him up - it was a great ride for a long time, as one might expect from a Napoleanic race car driver who anticiapted the curves and turns along the tracks, far better than he understood education and the development of young minds. Sklarz undoubtedly intends to be long gone before he would really have to work hard during the much anticiapted bad times that lay ahead, much like his mentor, the Town's falsely praised counterpart Barry Feldman.

He is a very inept Superintendent who knows little about quality education. On the other hand, he knows how to play the WH political arena very well. What a laugh that he wants a strategic plan to close the achievement gap NOW. That should have been his first priority in 1995. He has put programs in place that widen the gap because ALL STUDENTS ARE NOT EXPOSED TO A RIGOROUS CURRICULUM. He could have cared less about the minority population. He learned early to cater to the upper crust families with political clout and ignore the others. Remember when the higher end kids got free summer school and the kids in the low income area got nothing because they couldn't raise the almighty CMTS. Sklarz cared about one thing in WH: keeping his job and hoodwinking the public into thinking that scores improved under his LACK OF LEADERSHIP. And lastly, be sure to add Nancy Rion to the mix of people who never "got" the true nature of this inadequate and ineffectual superintendent.
