The WNBA killed the ABL and then refused to put a team in Hartford (NBA cities only, they said). Now they cry for attention and coverage -- in the Hartford Courant, no less. Pretty funny. Pretty sad.

The WNBA didn't kill the ABL. The ABL died because no one went. The WNBA probably would've died too if it didn't have the money of the NBA backing it. And the WNBA certainly didn't refuse to put a team in Hartford. The Mohegan tribe put up the money and brought a team to Connecticut. And obviously there's now no reason to have two teams in the state. Oh, and if anyone really cared, The Day does a better job of covering the Sun about 10 times over.

You lie. The WNBA certainly did refuse to put a team in Hartford, the city with the highest attendance of any ABL team. Ask Val Ackerman. Or Jeff Jacobs, who began an April 13, 2002 column by writing:
"For more than three years after the demise of the ABL, Hartford has banged its sporting head against one of the least reasonable, most unfair rules in the history of women's sports. If a city wanted a WNBA franchise, it first needed to have an NBA franchise. In order for Eve to make a buck playing basketball, she first needed to borrow a rib from Adam. In order to have a league of their own, the women have had to wait in the powder room until the men finished using the court. The WNBA has considered this sound business.
Hartford has considered the WNBA intransigent."
As I noted above, the league refused to put a WNBA team in Hartford because it wasn't an NBA city. A few years later they changed their policy, which is how the casino got one. But by then it was too late. Now they're suffering the fate they richly deserve: No fans.
And how's this for irony? The Courant gives free publicity to the WNBA by carrying a story about how the WNBA can't get enough free publicity in newspapers.
Face it, there's no reason to have even one WNBA team in the state. UConn Huskies are all the women's basketball that Connecticut needs or wants. See Sun attendance figures for details.:)
