Georgetown Hands UConn First Loss

Full story: Hartford Courant

At one point Monday night, despite the pitfalls and lethargy that had left UConn with a daunting climb, Jim Calhoun felt just fine about where his team stood.

New Year - Same team. Once again Thabeet disappears against talented big men. We have seen this act for 3 years. How they so called experts can think this is a final four team is amazing

Okay, Listen up again!

I have been on here after the "paradise jam" tourney and after gonzaga saying that Ucon is a soft team with no heart. I was laughed off this board. You told me to show up after the "huge" Gonzaga win and call the team overrated. I did and said wait until Big East. This team has no shooters, and relys on the softest center in the country for blocks while the guards get blown by time after time. Adrien just wants to be on camera. Another Donny Marshall. If he didn't back down a 6 foot guard 3 possessions in a row he would have finished with 6 points. Don't even get me started on "Jimmy The RAT". If he spent as much time coaching his team as he did crying to the refs, they would be ok.Hey Jim, how about mixing in a zone when your team is getting abused back door, and slashing to the hoops??? I had a feeling this board would be quiet today! The same fans that will leave your big bowl game at half when Buffalo is blowing Ucon out!
Greg Monroe owned Thabeet.

Losing happens. Having a bad game happens but this team looked confused. They played without enthusiasm and gave up towards the end. The coaches didn't appear to know what to do either. These are experienced players and coaches. I don't get it.

This team has been going down hill since Calhoun started losing his assistants. They were the ones who actually recruited talented players with heart. When will Uconn stop rescruiting big guys who are "projects:. They got lucky with Okafor only because of his intelligence. Maybe they should stop trying to lead the country in blocked shots and start playing real defense

Out coached and out played on both ends. G'Town went right at Thebeet. Uconn guards could not stop the dribble drive. Uconn's offense was motionless. The lack of desire should be the biggest concern for Uconn.

Well put. Wife's a UConn fan and I loved seeing Thabeet be a no show as usual when another big man is on the floor. Wait until physical Pitt starts pushing him around. Other than blocking shots this guy is totally unimpressive. At least when Okafor blocked shots he kept the ball in play. If UConn's as great as most people think they are should have no trouble beating a team that only goes 7 deep. Told my wife the same thing when Adrian started on his little 3 basket run, "yea he's going up against a little guard". Price needs to start showing some leadership skills or forget it. This team would have no shot against a NC.
Wife was totally quiet through most of the game - it was paradise.

Glad i'm not the only one who thought this. Is there really a need to pose in front of the camera after every dunk. Big deal, you just scored 2 points and oh yeah you're losing.. Man up and play some defense. Your individual stats mean nothing when your team is losing.

Also, something needs to be done with the schedule. What do you learn with playing teams like Western Carolina, Byrant and Deleware State? To be the best, you need to play the best. I'd rather take a loss to a UCLA team early in the season as opposed to a 4 point win @ Buffalo.

I find it hard to believe that Calhoun still thinks he's an elite COACH. Here's your game plan coach and every coach knows it. You only play man to man defense, period. You used to coach; traps, zones, full court presses, half court presses and traps. You trapped once late and had a steal. Your kids looked lost because you don't coach, coach. You never change and every coach knows it. How many times did you put a man at the foul line when Georgetown played zone? None. You beat a zone at the foul line in. It's time to coach or quit, you were outcoached and it's an obvious. Dribbling around the perimeter won't beat a zone, attack and kick, foul line in.

Poor game. Thabeet was soft and Dyson played one of his worst games at UConn. The 03-04 team lost six regular season games, including a thumping from Ga. Tech at the Garden before conference play and that team won the title. I'm not ready to write the season off yet, but last night was ugly.

Draft??? After that performance he needs a few more years in school. For someone who's improved so much, he took 5 steps back last night...hopefully this loss will show them that they're not playing like a true #2 team in the country.

Thabeet is a 7'3" back to the basket center. Greg Monroe is a power forward, who happens to play center in college. Would you put Shack on Garnett or Shack on Novitski, no. You can't expect a 7'3" center to guard someone who plays facing the basket, from the perimeter. In the NBA Thabeet guards Shack not Garnett. Calhoun was outcoached and it's happening a lot. UConn needed to play a little zone last night and keep Thabeet closer too the basket. I'd love to coach UConn, how hard is it to never deviate from a game plan, sad.

Simple solution...Bench Thabeet. Give Edwards the start.

You can't compare this team to 03-04. That team was 10 times better than this one. Wasn't T.Brown the point guard for that team? UConn needs a floor general like that. Gordon, Okafor, Anderson, Williams, Villanueva, Boone and Armstrong. This team's not even in the same ballpark.

Simply put, the team wasn't prepared. When you play one quality team prior to playing Georgetown this is what happens. I know almost everyone else plays soft teams to pad their Win Loss record, but what benefit does UCONN get out it? Nothing
This team is OVERRATED to say the least.....

Each year, UCONN men warm up by playing a series of games against schools that don't offer them any competition. Consequently when the Big East schedule rolls around, the won-loss column looks really great and the individual stats are impressive. However, playing all the milk toast teams doesn't prepare them for conference play. Take a look at the UCONN women's team which plays teams that offer stiff compitition early in the year. Perhaps the men should play teams that offer some challenges rather than schools like Bryant, Stoney Brook and Delaware State. If you saw the Buffalo game, you would have seen what would happen when they play teams with a higher level of talent.

Anyone who knows basketball can see that Thabeet has very little in the way of basketball skill. He has poor balance, slow feet, and poor footwork. Most significantly for a big man, he has bad hands...can't catch the ball. If you don't think hands are important, take a look at Kendrick Perkins or Leone Powe on the Celtics. Neither is particularly athletic, but have developed into reliable post players because they have good hands. Thabeet was exposed last night by a young, inexperienced, but very skilled big man. He reminds me of Samuel Dalambar...another mediocre 7'3" guy who is in the NBA only because his wingspan allows him to block a shot now and then. By the way Hakeem, didn't Luke Harangony drop about 30 on Uconn last year?
