West Virginia Football: Does Dana Holgorsen Still Have the Fans' Trust?

Dec 17, 2012 Full story: BleacherReport 6

With many programs, it is no longer acceptable to simply run a clean ship, win a few games and graduate some successful student-athletes. Now, these coaches must win, and win a lot, to appease the expectations of their fervent fan bases.

He's also only been the HC for two seasons. Like yourself, I wasn't at all happy with how badly the defense executed. However, there were signs of bad coaching. The most glaring being a secondary which repeated the same mistakes towards the end of the season (See OK & Iowa St) as they did early on (See Marshall, Maryland, & Baylor). The Result: They dumped the Secondary Coach, and Joe DeForest was demoted.(I didn't think the two Associate Defensive Coordinators thing would work anyway.) That's what a Head Coach does.

What he also does is hire new coaches, which has yet to happen. I'm thinking Dana Holgorsen is looking for someone with solid experience, results, and recruiting ability. It'll be interesting to see where it leads him. In the mean time, let's give him a couple more years.

West Virginia as well as Marshall sports both suffer from the same issue. Regardless of who is coaching these teams. Both of these schools will run past excellent home grown talent to fill their rosters with 2nd and 3rd tier talent from other States!

No other State universities would do such a thing! Even though I grew up there I find it hard to root for a team that passes on it's own talent pool only to fish and accept lesser talent from elsewhere. Here in Las Vegas, you know what they call WVU?

They call it FNU, Florida Northern University! They don't win because there is no pride in either program. These players that you are rooting for are there for the opportunity to play in the NFL, which is fine. However, if they were as good as the head coach wants you to think, then why didn't stay home and start at Florida state or Miami? Truthfully, because they weren't good enough. If that doesn't shock you, think about this, neither Florida state or Miami are very good either. So now, so what level of talent is Dana really passing off as great, while passing on great WV High School talent?

This shit has been going on for years, this is not new for either of these schools. However, it makes both schools irrelevant. Now some of you are going to swear that there is no talent in those hills right?

Then why not check the rosters of NFL teams and watch in amazement the amount of players born and raised in the mountaineer state, right under both of these scoops noses!

Also, as a major college coach in any state it's practical to bring in all of the H.S. Coaches in your area for clinics etc. You assist them with understanding your system and you forge relationships. In reality, you get every single top prospect in your back yard before you ever raid another states leftover pool!

Before I leave you guys, I have one question for you. What if they would have overlooked Jerry West? Yeah I thought so! Lol

What great numbers of "in state talent" have we let slip through our fingers? Name a few that WV didn't offer and completely knew nothing about. I agree we get the leftovers most of the time but if Jerry West came along today do you think WV could land him or does he look more like a Duke prospect - white, disciplined, great work ethic, very coachable - he has Duke written all over him. I guess what I'm saying is get a clue!

WVU was completely outcoached in several games this year. Next year will be worse.
