Unfortunately, you are absolutely correct. And the reason is the coaching staff. But hopefully that'll get straightened out shortly.

By the way, can we get a "Thank You" for channeling basketball talent your way? Billy Donavan, assistant for Pitino at UK. Antoine Walker. Pat Rileyt. Derek Anderson. Gerald Fitch (for a short time in Miami). John Pelphrey.

Yes, Florida is becoming a basketball state. You're welcome.

Talk to UK when the big bad Gators win 1,900 games, make 47 NCAA tournaments, win more SEC tournaments than all the SEC schools combined and almost forgot, 7 national championships. When this happens Florida can claim the rights to owning the sport of basketball. Until then you will still be a football state with a great three year run in basketball.

You compared UK previously with Great Britain but you really should compare Florida with Iran or Venezuela. While they are conveniently taking potshots at a superpower and dancing over what they consider a grave, the sleeping giant will reawaken and most assuredly retake their position in the world.

Going out on a limb when you've barely starting climbing the tree? Win 40-50 more and then start your bragging about who owns who.

Back again Mike? You finallly healed from the humiliation you suffered the last time you pronounced your Gators as the Kings? Anyone who would try to sell the accomplishments of this Gator team short would be almost as foolish as you proclaiming them to be the Kings of the SEC. But, numbers don't lie. Ask Jimmy Rayburn who he thinks is the King of the SEC after television ratings went down 15%. Ask the city of Atlanta who they think is the King of the SEC. Didn't have any trouble getting dinner reservations Saturday night did you? Ask Billy Donovan who he thinks is tops in the SEC...perhaps we'll have his answer soon enough.

I LIVED IN KY FOR 38 YEARS. NOT ONLY HAS FLORIDA COME UP IN THE BASKETBALL WORLD BUT KENTUCKYS PROGRAM HAS DECENDED INTO MEDIOCRITY. BUT DON'T FORGET MUCH OF FLORIDAS EMERGEGENCE INTO THE ELITE HAS BEEN DUE TO BILLY DONOVAN A COACH WHO GAINED SOME OF HIS TRAINING AT KENTUCKY. WILL FLORIDA STAY WHERE THEY ARE IF BILLY LEAVES?

Mike..its always a pleasure to read your colorful articles, but this time I felt compelled to defend you in your assault on the Kentucky "blue-bloods"; their era is obviously over as this still relatively young UF basketball team puts the last bulb in the great orange and blue neon sign that reads: "University of Florida: The King of College Sports"

University of Florida: "The King of College Sports"
That includes FOOTBALL which means UK should go ahead and drop their football team and continue to live in the PAST clinging onto their OLD glory days in basketball!!!!
Not much else for those hillbillies to live for.

HA! That is great stuff. I could not believe the ignorant crap I read on Kentucky boards about Joakim Noah yesterday. They are reduced to being offended by how he dominates other SEC teams who face Florida in their stead as they bounce out of the Gator Invitational early every year. Joakim earned his little dance, no matter how funky it was. At least he shows passion. UK might win some more games if Randolph Morris played with something resembling a pulse.

I hope Gator fans everywhere are enjoying this team, by the way. It is so special and teams like this don't come along often. Billy has this program reloading, but this particular team is amazing and rare. Enjoy it my fellow Gators, but this is a special time to be a Gator. GO GATORS!!!!!

UK fans will never get it. You have the tradition, but most of that you weren't even alive to see. Billy has Florida set for now and the future. I rather have the present and future than the past. Enjoy watching black and whites and reliving 'glory days' from before you were born.

Noah is the biggest tool im all of college basketball. What a classless pile of crap. I would hate to be a fan of a team that has him on the roster. Fla will fall hard in the tourney

Kentucky fans are beginning to resemble those silly Notre Dame Football fans that continually rely on past accomplishments to degrade successful programs of the present, and in turn, give themselves hope for the future. We should all be so lucky to "get off" on historical details few outsiders care about. In order to avoid the fate of those goofy Irish fans, I recommend the Cat faithful practice moderation and humility, however difficult that might be. The current malicious attitude does nothing but make your fans seem like confused losers. Everyone knows Kentucky did some really great things in the past, but there is much more to college basketball than Kentucky. Perhaps I am wrong, and the present really doesn't matter as much as the past, but then again, those 43 SEC Titles didn't help Kentucky win 44 did it?

Wow this year Fla was good- too bad they suck every other year! They are no king of sports. Fla will be back with the rest of the garbage teams here soon.

Florida should be proud of their recent success in college basketball. I root for all the teams in the SEC when they don't play Kentucky, whether it be basketball, football, baseball ect. However, it appears the recent success that Florida has had in basketball has overwhelmed you Mike. Your lack of class in celebrating Florida's basketball championship and six straight wins over Kentucky speaks volumes. When UK beats Florida again, I'm not going jump and scream and laugh like a teenage girl at a "boy band" concert. Why would I act like that. Kentucky is supposed to beat Florida. I'll just sit back, sip some good old Kentucky bourbon and smile. Oh, the fear you must have of Kentucky getting rid of Tubby Smith. Once that happens, the "Roman Empire" of college basketball will continue its history of college basketball domination. And, sadly for you, your "boy band" concert will end. Have a good day.......

Wow.

I'm NOT a UK fan, but was pointed to this article.

I must say that it's the most juvenile column I've ever read in any major publication. Why not just stick your tongue out and say "nanny nanny boo boo"? It's on about the same level.

Florida is the king of the SEC right now. I think you could have made that point by simply stating facts/figures and taking the high road. I guess you don't operate that way though.

It's sad to see higher education wasted on acting like a 10 year old.

Congratulations on your RECENT success, the gators are unbelievable to watch, however just because you won a couple of tournament championships doesn't dictate that UK has been dethroned, the cats will be back. I hope Florida remains a powerhouse as well as UT. it only makes the SEC a better conference. I'm tired of hearing about the Duke/UNC rivalry. I'm also glad to see an SEC school other than UK and Arkansas with a national title. Good luck to all SEC schools in the tournament this year.

Mike, until Florida wins 7 NCAA titles they won't own anything. Wait until Billy Donavon leaves Florida for The Roman Empire of College Basketball. The Tub Is draining so you better beware
