Your taxpayer dollars at work. Remember this when they say they have to cut the police because they have no money because of tax cuts. Kids could join a gym like the rest of us

I defend FAU's efforts to become more traditional. It's about time they put the fitness center on campus and improved/added residential halls there. I know the school will be very proactive in the next 10 to 15 years to make FAU competitive with other Florida schools on all levels.

FAU is cutting their budget for academics and other things that can actually benefit students. Then they soend $$$ on threadmills, go figure,as long as you have incempetent politcal hacks like Brogan running the show FAU will never amount to anything.

John G, could you do a better job running a university? If you have any balls, list Brogans incompetancies one by one. Start with getting a medical program on campus and go from there.

There's an amazing discrepancy between the likes of UF and FSU compared to FAU.

UM isn't so bad as a school (way overpriced though), they just recruit thugs for the athletic program.

Careful. While Brogan has brought good to the University, I wouldn't ask for a list.

How about starting with paying a former fundraiser a 1/2 million $$$ not to work; how about reducing course selection while at the same time spending approximately $40 mill on excercize equiptment. How about charging the highest srtudent activity fees in the state for sports teams nobody cares to watch; Brogan is a joke.

Sounds like you are fairly uninformed John G. The $40mil can't be from state funds earmarked for education. As far as highest student activity fees in the state, FIU just raised their's.

How about raising entrance requirements, how about the partnership with Scripps and Torrey Pines, how about negotiating a teaching hospital to be built on campus, how about starting a Med school program at FAU without costing $250,000,000 to the state like FIU and UCF are going to cost and now they are talking about adding another $110,000,000 to that sum, How about negotiating Harbor Branch to merge with FAU creating a huge research center for marine biology. How about the John G dumbass.

FAU needs a new president not a new gym. Spending millions on this type of stuff while at the same time cutting courses and staff is an outrage.

John G jerk, instead of talking about the $500K that a very smart and talented University president saw as nessecary why not talk about $110MIl that FIU and UCF are asking above what was already approved.

$110,000,000.00! that is $109,500,000.00 more than the severance pay or 220 times the amount. This IS tax payer's money. FAU started a program for a fraction of the cost and there are med students there right now as you read this.

These FAU stories always inspire at least:
- One person to say negative things about Brogan
- One person to insult the football team
- One person to complain about whatever the story is about
Often, it's the same juvenile person from Miami... possibly an FIU student. Since FIU and FAU have a rivalry, all those pedantic comments must be taken with a grain of salt.
That being said:
"There's an amazing discrepancy between the likes of UF and FSU compared to FAU."
Yeah, it's called "50+ years lead" and larger endowments. This is apples to oranges. Richer schools (like UF and FSU) can hire more faculty, produce more research, fund more construction, offer more courses, and take on more students.
Since UF and FSU have the chronological lead on schools like FAU/UCF/UNF (all great, but younger, schools), UF and FSU get the majority of the state money.
If the state money was distributed evenly across the board, you'd have many excellent schools in Florida.
They recently exacerbated an already terrible situation by passing the deferential tuition bill. The rich schools became richer while the poorer schools have to read their name in headlines like, "___ to cut back courses, reduce faculty".
Sometimes, schools like FAU should be commended just for keeping their heads above water.
Anyway...
FAU is becoming a more traditional school by the minute. Athletic facilities, like this one, are part of that. But there is more than one underlying purpose here: fit students (the ones using the fitness center) cope with stress better, perform better on academic measures, and are retained longer at the university.
In time, FAU will carve itself a very sizable niche in Florida. Sooner than you'd think.

Well its about time. For the past 8 years they had probably the worst workout area of any college in Florida. I took classes at North, Central and South BCC and all of them are better. FAU Davie is better. And dont even look at other public colleges as UF, FSU or others, they have basically a city block sized area for students. FAU has for years ignore students in such basic needs as a nice gym, cafeteria, library etc. The new cafeteria is a start and hopefully the gym will be nice as well. Of course, why pay FAU tuition when you can go to an established and non-communter school as FSU or UF?

FAU's Boca campus has a capacity of approximately 2400 residential students. We just built a new dorm exclusively for freshman and we have plans to build more housing.

In fact, within the next couple of years, FAU's Boca campus will double that number and have housing for 5000+ people. At that point, the main campus will have a significant residential population and will no longer merit the designation of "commuter school"... although the distributed campus structure in areas like Davie will cause some confusion on that point.

There will be some people -- notably pretentious graduates from other schools in Florida that I won't mention -- that will call FAU a 'commuter school' despite any development simply because they are insecure/immature and want to slam the reputation of other Florida schools.

Our library expanded its east wing and we now have a jewish center and a huge 24-hour study center with computer labs. Our old 24-hour study center became an Einstein's Bagels restaurant. Our new recreation center will be our third gym (there's the current gym, the Burrow, and now this one) and will expand to 140k square feet once the second phase is completed. Not a small place at all.

Last but not least, there are a lot of students who are here from places like UF and FSU for a number of reasons, including not liking the area (I always hear comments like "You get hit up for money by bums everywhere in Tallahassee") or the students ("At UF people will sabotage you to get a better grade").

Some people also like smaller schools... perhaps they don't want to have to take a bus every time they go to a different class... a class of 300+ people.

FAU may not have the instant recognizability of UF or FSU (which is also due, in large part, to the success of their football team rather than their academics... FSU is #112 in the U.S. News Rankings, for example).

Not that FAU is ranked highly either, but FAU *is* known by word-of-mouth for its education, ocean engineering, psychology, and accounting programs.

And perhaps as a result of that, I'm meeting people at FAU not only from FSU/UF/UCF, but also from New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Massachussetts, Texas, California. This is a very diverse school.

The writing is on the wall. A year later and FAU is cutting costs big time because of why? A lack of new students are the main reason. They can say the housing market is to blame but thats a joke, a school is about the students and thats something FAU has forgotten about for years.
