Only 3,000 tickets sold for the John Candy Memorial Bowl in Toronto, the ability to walk up to buy Gampel tickets, thousands of empty seats at the XL Center, TV ratings declining, fans that think the 4qt is optional at the Rent....What is happening to the Big Dog?
It isn't just the economy stupid because this slide has been happening for a few years. Is it the self-absorbed arrogant coaches? Is it the ticket policies based on extortion? Is the frequency of our cherished student athletes appearing in the police blotters? Is the annoying announcers like Joe D which trip over themselves to acclaim the UConn gods?
Hey Randy Edsell, Joe D and Kevin Nathan -- If "our team" stinks so much and tanks at the end of the game repeatedly, and I (and everyone in the stadium) knows the next play that will be called by the Huskies and I am sick of sitting in the cold and I want to get started on my three mile journey to my parked car at the Rent -- I will. I paid my hard earn cash to watch the game and pay a very small portion of Randy's salary. It is my choice. Start catering to me a bit because I am not replaceable as the empty seats should tell all of the empty suits in the athletic program.
I have been going to UConn games since the 1960s and I have had family members who where DI scholarship athletes -- so I understand big time sports. I feel like UConn better get off it high horse and start caring about the fans. This will help to keep the old fans like me and attract a new generation of supporters.

Easy Jim...this "is" bigtime college sports now....not the basement of the BigEast anymore....you should know better. The best collegiate athletes were not born and raised in Huckstable homes. Coaches need to father and guide a teenager starting at age 18 as well besides the athletic portion...and not just one...think of all the liftsyles and incoming mentalities to orchestrate....can you even begin to imagine such a task.
And then deal with the press and naysayers when such unfortunate events occur.
Remember the old saying of watch what you say until you have walked in the shoes of who you ridicule.
I don't appreciate the articles when a young kid falls back to his roots. But I applaud seeing these young boys turn the tables and learn from their mistakes......
Although your comment is not warranted for this article, I do appreciate the job Joe D does, I regret that someday Calhoun or Edsell will someday be gone....although no one is irreplaceable....no one.
I enjoy seeing a state atheletic team compete at the highest level understanding the repercussions.
And finally I respect everyone has their own opinions.

I the second cup of coffee may have made my post more strident than I wanted it to be. I am a UConn supporter and think in many ways they do a good job running the program. I think there is some serious problems that are driving people away from their support of UConn.
I agree with you that college age kids make mistakes whether they are on a team or not. I understand that but for some reason support for UConn athletics is dropping. I think UConn needs to try and figure that out. The NCAA knows that it is facing a drop in TV revenue in real dollar terms and that it cannot continue the upward trend in salary and costs.
Colleges are under pressure with state budget cuts and crashing endowments. Despite the rhetoric, UConn Sports is not self sufficient. Student fees and money from transferred from the University make up 25% of the budget of the athletic department. If you throw in the debt costs of the stadium, the football practice complex and other facilities the portion of the budget coming from things other than revenue and gifts must be approaching 50%.
The NCAA has already let the DIII schools know that the money being thrown off by DI to support the championships of the lower division is likely to diminish in the near future.
Like in 1986, UConn needs to form an advisory panel and look at where we are with athletics and where it wants to go. The 1986 panel along with a change in leadership turned UConn sports around. Maybe a new effort will keep it going strong.

Okay, it's all fine and dandy to argue about things we have no control over, BUT...
I'm looking forward to Monday night. Kemba Walker better bring his "big-boy" uniform because AJ Price's inability to defend and get up-tempo will be a liability against big, athletic guards like Sapp, Freeman and Chris Wright. Summers and Monroe won't dominate inside like they have against some of the littles GTown's played so that's a wash, so in my opinion, Austrie and Dyson's perimeter D is the difference. Should be a nice game.
And if they lose, the sun still comes up and 64 teams still get a chance to play in March. So let the boring, predictable "overrated" trolls post their hearts content.

Calm down Jim. Go out for a walk. Everything is going to be OK.

On a totally unrelated note: I didn't see the game, but do you think Adrien tossed up a 3 because he wanted to sit down and relax?

I think all players scheme to raise the coaches blood pressure periodically....this was Adriens turn.

Marcus already making excuses for a loss! A week ago all you morons were getting pumped up over a "big" win at Gonzaga who lost two nights later at home to mighty Portland State. Call me a troll but this team is Overrated with a capital O

Where is Marcus making excuses for a potential loss? All he said about that is if they lose the game, it won't be a big deal (he's right). His analysis of the game was pretty succinct and accurate, but I would like you to point out where, specifically, in that post, he was making excuses for a potential loss.
If you know anything about basketball, you know, by the way, that college kids are human. Thus I am not at all surprised with the way Gonzaga performed against Portland State (I knew someone would point out this loss). Not excusing it by any means -- Gonzaga should have blown them out of the water -- but this was a classic trap game, coming off a very emotional, hard-fought loss and looking forward to another big game vs. Tennessee, playing a halfway decent low-major. It's very disappointing to see them lose like that.
...and might I remind you that in UConn's own 2003-04 national championship season, they were trailing Yale, of all teams, in the second half, and only won by 10 points? You were probably saying that UConn was overrated after that game and wouldn't do anything that year. Gonzaga will be fine.
#10 Dec 27, 2008
You can rant and rave about low attendance at these cupcake teams that UCONN plays at this time of year but no one wants to be bored to death watching an undersized overmatched opponent get thier butts handed to them, I personally wish they would give each team 4 or 5 preseason games to tune up on this easy fodder and then get into playing real games with teams that are in the top 150 nationally they should do that or not count the teams they play that aren't in the top 150 real teams should play real teams, those are more interesting to go watch and get excited about seeing

No excuses up there, Joe, so read before you post. I guess the only team NOT overrated this year resides in Chapel Hill?
Listen man, I'll take an "overrated" 2/3 seed in the Big Dance and let the chips fall where they may. You can be sure that "overrated" UConn will be a group of grizzled, battle-ready dudes after conference play. You know damn well Roy Williams won't want them in his bracket.
