Irish return many players, have a lot to work on in '08

Full story: The Indianapolis Star

As Notre Dame learned during its 3-9 football season, there are no quick fixes, especially against a schedule that included 10 bowl eligible teams.

one problem remains ---- ND still has a sub-par coaching staff - even though it is the highest paid in college football!

I frankly think ND has nothing to be ashamed of this year. It was hard to watch, sometimes truly horrible to watch us struggle. We had great, tough opponants, against a new and inexperienced set of ND players. I give real kudos to the 5th year seniors who came back and set some great examples for the up and coming starting teams of the future.

Notre Dame in a BCS bowl game with a 3-9 record? To whom at BCS should losing football programs write the check?

2008 won't be much better than 2007!
I have watched many games over 47 years, and this was, by far the worst college team I have seen, Irish or otherwise.
Some observations from the bleachers:
Our quarterbacks need better coaching or we need smarter quarterbacks. How many times did they look down receivers, hold the ball too long, or drop back from the center and never look to the left to see an oncoming blitz? Wouldn't you think they would learn over the course of a season? Can't we find someone better than Ron to coach the quarterbacks? Let's face it, he never lived up to his billing as a quaterback, so why would he be a great quarterback coach?
The offensive line has never been the quality it was when Joe Moore was the line coach. This year, the offensive line was an embarrasement and there was no evidence of any improvement over time.
Perahps the worst quality a head coach can have is arrogance. An arrogant person rarely listens to advice and will continue to believe his way is the best way, smarter than everyone else, in spite of evidence to the contrary. While I am not sure if this is true of Charlie, it appears so.
Our team never seemed to be prepared for a particular opponent. Our game plan was like an elastic sock, one size fits all.
If anyone thinks Charlie was a great coach based on '05 and '06, they should have been in the stands in the BCS bowls. I seem to remember Charlie going for it on 4th down against Ohio State rather than kick a field goal....sound familiar.
2008 will be another throw away season.'09 will be the first time the Irish will have the possibility field a competitive team if the proper coaching changes come about.
The above comments are from a ND fan who understands football. I go the next step. Weis and Clausen are the perfect storm to ruin ND for years. Clausen is a Jeff George with a weak arm. On the rare times they scored, he's an island while others celebrate. Weis, a complete fraud. He's getting paid $3 million/yr and needs the Patriots to help him figure out why he's 3-9. I grew up in SB with Ara and Devine teams. ND always had class. That's gone with Weis. See below and try to imagine being arogant at 3-9.

Agreed. ND was inexperienced, the "O" line was terrible, and Zibby didn't have a great year. I expect much better things next year, and 8-4 may not be out of reach. Clausen will develop and will improve as an all around QB. If he has the receivers, he may be a Heisman candidate his junior year.

Boilerguy....Willingham is not an impressive recruiter anywhere he goes. Washington always pulls regional recruits and Notre Dame always pulls national recruits. Willingham has done nothing spectacular and he has not won. Weiss has highly ranked recruiting classes and he wins when talent is available. How is that for a double standard? Weiss = some success. Willingham = total failure.
