nice of kara walters to pummel an 18-year old for making a hard decision. Just shows how much class is really involved at UConn

as much class as depriving another athlete, who actually wants to play, of a scholarship?

if kara wolters quoted geno accurately, he just showed once again what an egocentric jerk he is!(and i'm a uconn fan.... perhaps despite him)
it's disappointing, of course, that delle donne is not coming to uconn, but give the girl a break. i'm sure she didn't commit to uconn knowing she wasn't going to come. obviously, she has things to deal with, and geno should, as a 'mature' adult not an 18 year old away from home for perhaps the first time, be able to understand this and accept it without putting her down.
even if he doesn't understand this (but if he's the great basketball psychologist he supposedly is with college basketball stars, he should), he doesn't have to pout and put down an 18 year old trying to find her way - equating her to a cancer, and saying it's best she didn't come at all. for her sake, he's probably right.
once again, i'll have to root for uconn despite it's coach.

I thought the "whacked" and "cancer" comments came from Kara, not Geno, but however you want to say it (and I agree that it's badly phrased), it would have been bad for all involved to have someone on the team who didn't want to be there, wasn't a team player, or whatever the issue may be. Yes, EDD is young and has had to grow up in a basketball fishbowl, but we all have to leave home for the first time eventually. But she made a commitment, and she should have tried to live up to it for a season at least. Now, the team is down one scholarship player (or more, if they get hit by injuries again this year.) That leaves a thinner bench, and puts more pressure on the players who *are* living up to their commitments.

She's been more trouble than she's worth, let's forget we ever heard her name and more on.

Geno has been nothing but understanding about this young lady. I think everyone is taking words out of context in order to bash those they don't like. I'm sure everyone is disappointed, but no one wants someone on their team that doesn't want to play. Everyone seems to be wishing her well. As do I.

"What a waste. It's the most bizarre thing I've ever heard. To have an opportunity like that to play, obviously, at the best college women's program in the world ... and she threw it away."

Better now than to have her affect the team negatively and be like a cancer to the team because she's whacked.

These two quotes kind of conflict a bit don't they? Whacked? Don't sound like the quotes that would be attributed to the "best program in the world." Also, not sure what criteris is being used to establish this lofty classification, but leading a sport in National Championships and having the all-time winningest coach in Collegiate Basketball must not be two of them.

I'm thinking she didn't get along with Shea Ralph. Look for her to enroll at PC soon.

The quotes provided by Kara Wolters are unfortunate to say the least. Even if Geno made those comments, one would think that Kara would know enough not to repeat them! The real story on why EDD decided not to attend UCONN has yet to come forward. Don't be surprised to see her emerge with another team soon, one that that will work around and with her sensitivities.

She is doing what is best for her not the fans... GOOD FOR HER! Disappointed yes in not being able to see such a talent, however it IS best for the team. We have a championship team that needs every player focused on their goal, Bringing home the National Championship. Good Luck Elena!

You people are sick, leave the young lady alone. Not one of you knew anything about UCONN Womens BBall a few years ago. Now everyone kisses up to the coach who could care less. You all think you know these kids and what they feeel, you don't let her make the decision that will best serve her and her family. They are the ones who have put in the time to make comments, not you, Geno, Kara or anyone else. Get a life!!!!!!!!!!

I am sure that Kara is being Kara (i.e., the insensitive me-first person she has always been) and those were not geno's words, but her own. For someone who has always gotten a lot of support from fans and teammates during her own personal struggles, Kara has a short memory and a big mouth. I do not look forward to her "all about me and my basketball clinic in my garage" commentary this year. IMO, we need another basketball commentator than Kara. Bring back Colleen Healy!!

I'm very disappointed to see quotes like that from Kara about an 18-year-old kid. She should know better, especially as an experienced color commentator.

rich elliot: clear this up, please: who made the comments about delle donne being like a cancer and whacked? geno or kara. whichever one did is, as was stated before, very insensitive to say the least.
if it wasn't geno, 1000 mea calpas to him.

This is pathetic. Leave the poor girl alone. So she doesn't want to play basketball at UCONN -- big deal. She's an 18-year-old kid and doesn't deserve to be prosecuted in the media because she changed her mind about where she wanted to go to school. Obviously something happened to turn her off to the school. It's her life, she can do what she wants.

As far as the scholarship goes -- give it to a deserving student who is more interested in ACADEMICS than sports and may not be able to go to college without it! What a concept!

Its obvious that the cancer and whacked comments come from Kara. Geno has too much class to say that about a recruit, even if she quits. I say, glad she's not coming. I don't want anyone to play for UConn who is not 100% committed and isn't going to play her heart out, like Maya Moore. EDD must be a very immature girl, I have a daughter the same age and I would be ashamed if mine acted like EDD has. She is throwing away the opportunity of a lifetime.

I think Kara Wolters is 'whacked' for making such unprofessional comments about a teenaged girl who clearly has some personal issues to take care of. Who doesn't have issues? Wolters should be 'whacked' on the head for being such an ass. way to represent the uconn community, way to go.

SareK you are a idiot. EDD maybe changed her mind and maybe wants to be closer to her family. That does not make her immature...you are the immature one. I feel sorry for your daughter of the same age if you are her mother. Basketball is not life!! You are a fool!
