Bulldogs thrive as road warriors

Full story: The Indianapolis Star

This counts as a road victory, even though there were more fans wearing Butler blue than cheering for Loyola.

Not to rain on the parade, but I'm thinking a real 14th ranked team would crush some of these very small schools.

Butler seems to win by only a few.

So either butler plays to its competition or really is ranked way too high.

Perhaps a "real" 14th ranked team would crush some of these very small schools. However, if you noticed by watching the game last night, Stevens was playing a lot of guys in shorter spurts. This can make it tough for a team to get in a rhythm. Also, for a lot of these "very small schools", Butler is the only ranked team that is going to come and play them at home, so this really is the game where they can make a name for themselves. All that being said, this team can play better and hopefully they'll continue to improve throughout the year and into March.

Go Dawgs!

Cru, you actually have a good point in that they don't "blow out" opponents. This is something myself and other Butler fans have been looking for.

In my opinion they play to the level of their competition. For whatever reason, they look average against some bad teams, and spectacular against the best teams.

No matter who they are playing, the reason they are winning is b/c of their tough as nails d-fense, they don't miss free throws, and they are a great 3-point shooting team. Name me one team that has mastered all of these fundamentals that is losing games this season. I'm waiting....

Butler really isn't the type of team that will blow other teams out unless they have a very good shooting night. The bottom line is they do what it takes to win. That's the sign of disciplined, well coached team.

I personally did see some improvement on offense last night. I was glad for that, but the Dawgs are still playing far from their potential at the moment.
Graves and Campbell are both off their games as of yet and I saw several poor decisions made on offense again last night. Sometimes they pass too much or make bad passes and other times they are too quick to shoot when they should be passing the ball.
One example is a time in the second when Howard was driving from the right side with an open lane and he chose to pass rather than finish. The result was a missed long shot rather than a basket in close and/or a trip to the foul line.
Maybe I'm expecting too much for the moment. I hope Butlerfan is right and they will be playing at the top of their game come March. I'm just a little frustrated seeing a team that should be more talented than last year's by far play so sloppy on offense.
They are 14-1 and should be 15-1 later this week. The Colts struggled through a lot of games last year and looked really rough at times, and they won it all. The Dawgs keep winning and at the end of the day that is the most important thing.

Dude Loyola is over 15,000 students, which makes it over three times Butler's size. Besides what does school size have to do with anything anyway ? This isn't High School.

Frustrated with 14-1. You are being unreasonable. As a famous NFL coach stated "you play to win the game." Good job Dawgs, a road win in any conference in America is a good win. You point out petty mistakes but show me one team in the country that doesn't make mistakes. You must be upset that the Dawgs are better without Lick. Keep winning Dawgs. Butler fans that are frustrated with 14-1 make all BU fans look bad. We are ranked 14th in the country, a lock for the NCAA, the best mid major in the country, and could do some real damage in the tournament.

Bulter has beaten teams from major conferences this year mostly on neutral courts.(Big Ten = Michigan & Ohio State, Big Twelve = Texas Tech, ACC = Virgina Tech & Florida State) Any IU or Purdue fan would be happy to have a resume like that at this point in the season. Stop complaining about this team they are 14-1.

I would like to see bigger margins, but it was clear watching the last 5 minutes that Coach Stevens told them to hold the ball. Hell, one time Zach Hahn had the ball in the lane with no defenders, and passed on the layup in order to dribble it back out.

What is the point of embarrassing a team you have to play again?

And you the ill-informed man, who posted above, Butler's 14-1 record has been attained navigating the 64th-rated schedule in the country. I suppose you could compare that to 295th-rated schedule for IU or the 300th-rated schedule at Purdue, but I don't if you are that interested in facts.

You take me wrong. I'm a diehard fan for life and hope for great things from coach Stevens. I am estatic with 14-1 and expect the Dawgs to be 15-1 after Thursday.
The fact is I want them to do major damage in the tourney. To do that though they will have to get that offense firing on all cylinders.
As far as making BU fans look bad because I question some things on the court. I guess as a fan you expect us all to check our brains at the door and be rah rah clones like you. The fact is none of are ripping coach Stevens. I really respect the guy. I think he will be great. I just see some problems with the offense and would like to see those problems go away.
I think voicing my concerns makes for intelligent discussion among fans and I don't think it makes me a "bad fan."
Never thought I'd have to defend myself against a fellow Bulldog fanatic. I'm ashamed of you.
By the way the NFL coach you quoted is Herm Edwards and he is a bad coach with a rotten team and a rotten record. The quote was made in response to the question about whether his Jets would throw their final game so they could secure the worst record and the first draft pick that year in the NFL.

An 11-point win by Butler is considered a "blowout." Butler was in control the entire game and just because they aren't winning by 30 doesn't mean they didn't win handily. It's their style of play that makes it this way, slow tempo. The game was "close" late, but I wasn't worried because Butler limits the amount of possessions its opponents are going to get, so if Loyola wanted to win, they'd have to hit every single shot they took in the last five minutes.

If I remember correctly, Stevens made numerous substitutions after Butler took a 14-2 lead. Good to see Jukes scoring some points, rebounding and blocking that shot at the end of the half.

I live out of town and do not get to see Butler games. But, the articles I read (and I read all of them) make Butler sound really great! I did see them in the tourney last year and hope that they do well again this year. They played a much more entertaining style than IU or PU. So they don't blow people out --- they win, don't they?

Point margin is a deceptive statistic. Butler plays a deliberate offense that uses up most the clock and their defense makes the opponent use up a lot of clock too. So, the game is actually much shorter than 40 minutes. An eleven point margin would be more comparable to a 25 point win.

Todd, the bottom line is Graves and Campbell have not been playing that well. They are missing a lot of shots. Green and Howard have been carrying this team for the last few weeks. Green is playing at the highest level.

A road win in conference is a good win, no matter what the score is or who the opponent is. And you are right that for the most part, other than maybe Alaska, Campbell and Graves have not hit their stride. Imagine when that happens. BU was in control from the tip last night and simply toying with loyola for the most part. And Stevens knew he had some room for error so if you watched, he played some different combinations throughout the game to see if anything worked. I like the depth of this team and the grit, those two will get us a long way this season.

Gang, I have this rule. When any of my teams plays on the road, especially in conference, I take a one-point win. I don't care who the opponent is, you always get their best effort when they are at home. I'm sure Roy Williams is not unhappy with the last second OT win Sunday at Clemson. Let's just enjoy it...these are special players in a very special time and they don't come our way very often.
