First on the Gordo comments, given his limited athleticism, he really did play fairly well the last few games of the season. Wish he would have had a better career, but I think he competed at D1. Having so many players around him with a low basketball IQ, has limited him though.
Now on the game last night, its embarrasing to see the aggies trying to run offensive sets. They simply cant, and for whtever reason, everyone was reluctant to shoot. On one play, Gillenwater was quadruple teamed down low, and he correctly found a wide open aggie at the top of the key, who completely passed up the shot. Our offensive play calling consisted of the aggies spreading the floor, and Kabongo going one on one from the top of the key.
Kabongo is a nice player, and for stretches, he was the only one that looked like he knew the game, and wanted to win. He'll be a good one, if he can quit the attitude a little bit. I hope somebody will pull him aside and tell him to get grounded. Its annoying to see him celebrate and make funny faces and body language after every basket he makes.
Now,where do the Aggies go from here? Menzies can no longer use the "wait til march" motto next year if the aggies get off to a slow start. Next year will define Menzies, and let us know the state of our basketball program. I believe it will be his first full senior class, playing with all of his players, under his system. The aggies still need to get tough inside, and find a way to replace Gordo's outside shooting. I'm not super optimistic for next year. Minus Gordo, the roster will look almost the same, as will the coaching. I hope one of the guys gaining eligibility is a stud, but given what I've seen from Menzies recruits, I doubt it. The scary thing is that after next year, Troy, Big Wen, Laroche, and Rahman will all be gone. Can anybody envision what our team will be like with only the rest of the players on the court?
I like when Kabongo gets into it and gets excited when he gets a dunk like he did the other night. I dont mind it at all. I agree that it was pathetic to watch us get pounded down low when he have the taller and bigger team. Chili and Troy stood around and would get boxed out by players they should have dominated.

I agree that next year will define Menzies as long as we can stay healthy. Having Wendell back will be HUGE! He has always played with a lot of heart and would do all the dirty work even though he is undersized for a forward. Having Rahman back as well would be nice.

I can't believe I am saying this but I missed Jahmar Young's cockiness yesterday. He had the mindset that we could win no matter what and no matter who we played and we needed that yesterday. No one other than Kabongo thought they could win yesterday.

Tough year. Now on to the next. The only good thing I see about next season is that it will be Marvin Menzies last. I just keep telling myself, "one more year, one more year."

I got the feeling all season, that Coach Menzies was looking forward to the tournament to finally turn around the season since the Aggies could not even break .500. Well like the Cubs, wait till next year. And I even thought about buying season tickets this year. Whew.

There is no offense. Don't know if its the system menzies is running but it would make sense to have your point guard drive to the basket. I can't understand these basketball schemes now days from my sons high school to college. All they do is pass around the perimeter and then try to hit an outside shot. Just drive and dish get to the basics!!

Troy would never play on my team until he learns to play defence and gets off his lazy tail. He just wants to be a hero without hard work and MM thinks he is great. All of players are too slow as shown by the So Colo. game

It's a shame that the best player on the team is also emotionally one of the weakest. My neighbor's four-year-old has more guts than a certain NMSU forward. What a friggin' crybaby.

I think NMSU and the Las Cruces community should dig deep in their pockets and bring Billy Gillespie to coach NMSU. Now there is an awesome coach and would probably take on the role. While it is great we have these players from everywhere but the USA. we need backbone players from the US where we can at least say their names. The Northern Colorado coach is a great idea as well, so is St. Mary's or anybody beside MM. Menzies almost beat Michigan last year with Reggie Theus players. Take those players away minus one or two and we end up 16-17 with an average of 6000 people in a newly remodeled Pan American Center. The "Pan-A-Maniacs" become the "Pan-A-Demics" this year. When has NMSU ever been a "sub-par" basketball team. When we had a real AD, they would fire those sub par coaches. Chris Pompey, Russ Bradburd all good coaches. If we don't fire Menzies then at least send him to a Motivational Seminar to get a fire under his ass!

Not saying Chris Pompey and Rus Bradburd were Aggie coaches, but just stating they would potentially be great at coaches since they can sure recruit.

While I agree last night was hard to swollow, you're going to the fire the coach card way to quick if you ask me. He just got us to the tournamnent last year and damn near beat Michigan state. Next year will tell us a lot and hopefully we can stay healthly thats was a big problem this year. We lost McKines for the entire year, glillenwarter for a bunch of games early in the year, i think hamadu was never fullly healthy and he didn't even play the last few games. Those are three key assets to the aggie team and it's hard to combat those losses. All those guys will be back next year as will most of this team. What we do need is someone new to run the point, Larouche looked really bad last night and had a pretty rough year. So I say give Marvin one more year and then we can talk about the whole firing thing.
I'm not too sure what to do about Menzies. One hand, he did have a bad hand dealt to him this year with our top 3 players being injured for either the whole year or most of the year. On the other hand, it took him one whole half to notice that Michigan State was tearing apart our zone in the NCAA tournament last year and it took halftime before he changed to man to man.

How about William Benjamin, Randy Brown for NMSU head coach a few years?

Thanks Gordo.....for your 4 years.
Marvin Menzies is not a good coach has a low basketball IQ and had his players quit on him many times this season. Is this M o r o n Menzies give him a second chance, his free pass, his "He won the WAC Tourney, gave MSU a run for the money" reason to keep this no good excuse for a coach. How can this continue, the Pan Am never comes close to filling up, another year of this....say it's not happening. As a season ticket holder I support my team. Its the name on the the front of the jersey, but it was painful to watch. Marvin "M" Menzies is a recruiter that's it ....not a coach.

An overall disappointing season. I was hopeful that the Aggies would salvage it in the conference tournament again.

I don't think we have to worry about THIS coach leaving for the NBA, or any other coaching job for that matter.

I heard the announcers say during one of the games that 37 of the previous 39 shots by Castillo were from behind the 3-point line. And this was right after a nice move to the bucket by Castillo. It's too late now, but I think he could have upped his scoring average by 5 points a game by driving to the basket once in awhile.

Aggie athletics are about as poor as I've seen them in the past 5 years or so. Other than baseball and women's soccer, not much to cheer about. Where does the buck stop?

Crimson and White: I wonder if you have seen games since Laroche has been here. He led the WAC in assists and was second on the Aggies in scoring and played at least 35 minutes a game.

1977 Alumni: Actually Rice should have been coach of the year and was the Associate Head Coach at Gonzaga for many years.

It would be nice if either one of you guys knew what they were talking about before entering blog comments.
