UConn Overcomes Baylor

The UConn Huskies wouldn't care if you kept playing that song all day every day as long as they get results like they did Friday night. Full Story

It is absolutely wonderful to see UCONN football squeaking out wins against the likes of Baylor, but it is time to build a schedule
that has more than one or two real BCS caliber teams on it every other year or so. Playing a grapefruit schedule gets you a grapefruit bowl game (think meineke).
And a word to the media....
While you prefer to call the half billion dollar football stadium "The Rent", which is accurate for a lower tier team such as UCONN, it probably wouldn't hurt if you started calling the stadium "WRENCH", like the people who pay for the seats (and the stadium itself) already do. In the words of the late George Carlin, baseball is played in a park, football in a stadium. The rent? EGAD!! how lame......like cornhumper versus cornhusker..(reference to Nebraska for those of you new to the sport).

Uconn might be the worst undefeated team in America. Uconn will not play a ranked team until South Florida which appears to be the only legit team in the Big East. WestVa has a dangerous player, but 2 losses. Rutgers Cuse, Cinn stink. After South Florida, UNC, might be the 2nd best team on the schedule. Uconn, especially Lorezen, seemed pretty impressed w/ itself last night. Aome perspective, Baylor has wins against Northwestern State and Washington State.....Wake destroyed Baylor. UVA's only win is against Richmond. I'd love to see an undefeated season. Uconn in a BCS game would be comedy.

They maybe 4-0, but Hofstra was a step above a JV high school team, Temple is terrible, Virginia looked like a high school team and Baylor is a lower tier 1-A school. UCONN is lucky if they win 5 games this year. I was at the game and never saw more drunk and obnoxious fans in my life. A lot of white trash attends those games. It is embarrassing to say I'm from Connecticut. I also enjoyed walking 15 miles back to the car from the stadium.

No, but Baylor, Temple & Virginia certainly are.

So in two games he is a veteran? What is your excuse that a talented, but TRUE freshmen almost beat UCONN at home last night? A lot of dopey UCONN fans (and a lot attend those games) actually think that was a good win last night, but a true football fan nows it wasn't at all.

Griffin III didn't play against Wake Forest. Thank god for the Linebackers who had for the most part great games. Randy please take control of your secondary schemes, # 1 and 14 where running free all night. That big guy Chichester on UL will kill us next week.

I don't know how you can call yourself a "true football fan" (which you presumably are calling yourself if you say you went to the game and you say that a "true football fan nows [sic] it wasn't at all") if you constantly insult basically everyone else that follows the team except for you, and you constantly insult the team itself every single chance you get. I thought people go to a football game to support the team and cheer it on. I know plenty of people who would rather be at the game (as I was) in your seat. For someone who knows everything about football like you, I thought you should have known what the purpose of going to a football game is. If you're going to spout your mouth off no matter what UConn does, then stay home when they play Cincinnati, please.

lol...thank you Sally....
Look, comparisons to Coach Calhoun and his program are common so let's look at one..after the stunning NIT win, Coach C continued on an upward trajectory that really only sputtered once or twice in nearly a generation and is still onthe top of their game. To mention UCONN Men's hoop in the same breath as say DUKE or Cinncinati is appropriate - they are no UCLA but they are among the best of their time.

UCONN football's sole claim to fame is that they shared a very weak league title with a team who showed them what winning a footbal game is really about? Cochampions of the Big East? Ahhh..statistics lie

Sounds like yo think you know football, sir? Well then, if you "know football" you should realize that playing a Big 12 football is much more than a grapefruit. Take a look at Baylor's roster, go to your favorite scouting Web site (considering you "know football" you'll have one bookmarked) and crosscheck those players with the teams that were in contention for landing them as recruits.
Also, since you "know football," you'll certainly remember when Lehigh and UMass and New Hampshire were pounding the Huskies. Since you "know football" you'll know that wasn't just in 1967, my friend, that was in the 1990s.
The University of Connecticut beat a team last night from a conference that has produced some of the best football players in the history of the sport, and they have a schedule of, dare I say, very ripened "grapefruits" on the horizon, South Florida, Rutgers, WVU, Pitt and Louisville aren't exactly creampuffs.
So shut your mouth (err, your talking keyboard), sit back in your comfy computer chair and realize that you have to "know football" before you say you know UConn football.
Good win, Huskies.
p.s. One last thing, you are probably one of the idiots who sit around the water cooler on Mondays saying "we" played awesome this weekend. Um, news flash: "YOU" didn't do anything but stuff your grill with nachos and drink four cans of Pepsi while sitting on your ass with your toy poodle. The UConn football team "plays" on the field. "You" do not.

Baylor did not start Griffin in that first game against Wake. They started Kirby Freeman who stunk it up for a quarter and a half before Art Briles put Griffin in only to pull him half way through the 4th. Baylor's best competitive edge against Wake was when Griffin was playing. If Griffin HAD started, it would have been a much different game. I am not saying that Baylor wins but it would have been much closer.

Bottom line is, UConn is adding Notre Dame to the schedule as well as Tennessee moving forward. It takes time to build a program up enough so that quality teams will schedule you out of conference. You can't go from 1-AA to playing USC, Florida, and Ohio State overnight. The best they can do is beat the teams they play, which they're doing so far. The way I see it, 4-5 years ago, they would have lost to teams like Temple, Baylor, and Virgina. They're not any more. They're making progress as quickly as any school in the country. You start beating the ND's and the Tennessees of the world here and there and you build even more. People who think you can flip a switch and go to the Rose Bowl in a matter of 3-4 years know nothing about the sport. Say all you want about the Big East, but that's the conference they're in, and they won a share of the title last year, which 99% of teams in the nation can't say. They're playing and beating the teams they would have lost to just 2-3 years ago; that's pretty good progress. Criticize criticize criticize: but at the end of the season, UConn might put themselves in position to be atop the B.E. again and go to a Bowl Game...

I was very happy to see the win, especially with the inept officials and their inability to officiate correctly. More than once I thought they were trying their hardest to make certain that UCONN did not win.
