Tobacco use is the world’s leading cause of preventable death, according to the World Health Organization.
Increasingly, the burden of tobacco use is greatest in low- and middle-income countries that have been targeted by the tobacco industry with its deadly products and deceptive marketing practices. The result: A global tobacco epidemic of preventable death, disease and economic harm to countries and families.
Tobacco use killed 100 million people in the 20th century. If current trends continue, tobacco will kill one billion people in the 21st century.
Tobacco kills nearly 6 million people a year and accounts for one in 10 deaths among adults.
If current trends persist, tobacco will kill more than 8 million people worldwide annually by the year 2030, with 80 percent of these deaths in low- and middle-income countries.
Almost a billion men in the world – including half of men in low- and middle-income countries – and 250 million women smoke. If no action is taken, 650 million smokers alive today will eventually die from tobacco-related diseases.
Tobacco kills prematurely. On average, smokers lose 15 years of life, and up to half of all smokers will die of tobacco-related causes.
Every day, 80,000 to 100,000 young people around the world become addicted to tobacco. If current trends continue, 250 million children and young people alive today will die from tobacco-related diseases.
Secondhand smoke kills more than 600,000 people worldwide each year, including 165,000 children.
Tobacco use costs the world an estimated $500 billion each year in health care expenditures, productivity losses, fire damage and other costs.
Health care costs associated with tobacco related illnesses are extremely high. In the United States, annual tobacco-related health care costs amount to 96 billion USD ; in Germany, 7 billion USD; in Australia, 1 billion USD.
Tobacco-related illnesses and premature mortality impose high productivity costs to the economy because of sick workers and those who die prematurely during their working years. Lost economic opportunities in highly-populated developing countries will be particularly severe as tobacco use is high and growing in those areas.
Countries that are net importers of tobacco leaf and tobacco products lose millions of dollars a year in foreign exchanges.
Fire damage and the related costs are significant. In 2000, about 300,000 or 10 percent of all fire deaths worldwide were caused by smoking and the estimated total cost of fires caused by smoking was 27 billion USD.
Tobacco production and use damage the environment and divert agricultural land that could be used to grow food.

<quoted text>So when Obama leaves office at the end of his term you will realize just how wrong you were about him. I will be here to remind you.
There will be statues of Obama in the capital city, Detroit, of the New Somalia, formerly known as the USA.

Orwell's predictions of the dysfunctional society fostered by progressives are already comimg true:

"The nightmare societies portrayed in the George Orwell novels "1984" and "Animal Farm" gave us the word "Orwellian." That adjective reflects a vast government's efforts not just to deceive and control the people, but also to do so by reinventing the meaning of ordinary words while rewriting the past itself.

America, of all places, is becoming Orwellian.

* The president repeatedly reminds the American people that under his leadership, the U.S. has produced a record level of new oil and natural gas. But didn't Obama radically curtail leases for just such new energy production on federal lands? Have the edicts on the barn wall of "Animal Farm" been changed again, with the production of new oil and gas going from bad to suddenly good?

* Does anyone remember that the Affordable Care Act was sold on the premise that it would guarantee retention of existing health plans and doctors, create 4 million new jobs and save families $2,500 a year in premiums, all while extending expanded coverage to more people at a lower cost?

Only in Orwell's world of doublespeak could raising taxes, while the costs of millions of health plans soars, be called "affordable." Is losing your existing plan and doctor a way of retaining them?

The Congressional Budget Office recently warned that Obamacare would "keep hours worked and potential output during the next 10 years lower than they would be otherwise." That nonpartisan verdict should be bad news for workers.

Not in our brave new world. The Obama administration says it is pleased that workers will now be freed from "job lock."

What is JOB LOCK -- a made-up Newspeak word right out "1984"? Work fewer hours, make less money and create fewer outputs -- and be happy."

The app will make fast food even faster by allowing customers to order and pay for their food via a smartphone or tablet before they set foot in the restaurant.

Currently being tested at locations in Salt Lake City and in Austin, Texas, the app lets users order a meal remotely then collect it in person from a store or drive-thru window. The app can also be used by the fast food chain to alert customers to special promotions and to offer loyalty programs and rewards points.

Although the company's menus don't seem to move with the times, it is always one of the first businesses to understand the possibilities that technological changes offer and to embrace them. As well as apps, McDonald's is currently testing the effectiveness of wireless charging points in a number of its restaurants in Europe and was one of the first companies to offer its visitors free wi-fi with no strings attached.

Other US companies competing for the same consumers, such as Starbucks, are also investing heavily in apps, mobile payments and other features designed to appeal to the smartphone generation. In all of its US and Canadian stores, Starbucks customers can use their iPhones to pay for their coffee via the Pay by Square app and can even use it to tip their favorite barista.

The company is also testing wireless charging points in its Silicon Valley branches to see if the promise of simple, free phone and tablet battery recharging will be enough to get existing customers to stay for longer and to attract new clients to the premises.

Fox News contributor Kirsten Powers said Tuesday she is tired of constantly having to defend ObamaCare, saying the White House continues to put the law’s defenders in an awkward position.
Powers, who is also a columnist for The Daily Beast, expressed her frustration in reference to National Journal’s Ron Fournier, who admitted that he was a “naïve columnist” in a Tuesday article:“Why I’m Getting Sick of Defending ObamaCare.”
“I’m going to say amen, brother, because it’s exactly how I feel. People who have supported the law, who support universal healthcare, are constantly put in the position of having to defend this president, who has really incompetently put this together, rolled it out, and that’s why he has to do this. It’s why he has to keep doing this; because it’s not working.”
Powers, who is generally respected by both Democrats and Republicans alike, wasn’t through. She levelled her harshest criticism of ObamaCare to date:
“It’s now gotten to the point where it seems like there’s an exemption made for pretty much everybody except for individuals. A lot of people who have really been screwed over by the law, you know, who are left without insurance or with extremely expensive insurance.”
Kisten Powers represents the best of the “fair and balanced” on Fox News. While she is a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat, she also calls ‘em like she’s sees ‘em. Something you won’t often see on MSNBC.
Incidentally, followers of IJR may recall this story from last fall about the unwanted ObamaCare surprise Kirsten received in her mailbox.

I have some important news for you.

Every week, people lose their jobs & file unemployment claims.

How many???

Anything under 375,000 is considered an indication on job growth.

Under 300,000 is considered really good

So really, all, your posts about plants closing, people losing jobs etc etc etc just show how uninformed & ignorant you are.

But you and I both know that is never going to happen. The politically correct obsession with smoking as the ONLY personal bad choice that must be banned and smokers being the only "sinners" to be acceptably socially ostracized is a Progressive-Oppressive Party victory.
Many non-smokers agree with me. This obsession has simply gotten out of control.
Why did CVS ban e-cigarettes? It's just vapor. But it's the stigma of smoking - even if it's vapor - that must be determined as socially unacceptable.
Smoking marijuana, however, anywhere and anytime is perfectly socially acceptable.
You're really not getting this?

"Common defense" is the obligation of the federal government to use its authority as the central government over all the states having in common being part of the United States to defend each and every state. You'd know that if you read the complete sentence, moron.

Health groups call on fast-food to drop soda from kids' menu
Breitbart ^| February 3, 2014 | UPI
Posted on 2/4/2014 9:13:23 PM by Tolerance Sucks Rocks

Health organizations and U.S. nutrition experts say they are calling on fast-food restaurant chains to take sugary drinks off their children's menus.

Margo G. Wootan, nutrition policy director at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, said McDonald's agreed to drop soda and sugary drinks from Happy Meal menus last year, and 100 U.S. and local health organizations along with nutritional experts said in a letter to Wendy's, Burger King and 21 other restaurant chains that they too should remove the items from their children's menus.

Subway, Chipotle, Arby's and Panera already exclude sugary drinks from kids' meals.

"With 1-in-3 children overweight or obese in the United States, it no longer makes sense to include sugary beverages in restaurant meals for young children," the letter said.

The groups quoted research published in The Lancet that found drinking just one additional sugary drink every day increases a child's chances of becoming obese by 60 percent, Wootan said.
