The GOP’s Misinformation Problem in Action

Robert Costa explains why there are so many Republicans in Congress committed to an effort that is certain to fail:

And so many of these members now live in the conservative world of talk radio and tea party conventions and Fox News invitations. And so the conservative strategy of the moment, no matter how unrealistic it might be, catches fire. The members begin to believe they can achieve things in divided government that most objective observers would believe is impossible [bold mine-DL]. Leaders are dealing with these expectations that wouldn’t exist in a normal environment.

Costa’s explanation seems to be the only way to account for Republican behavior that otherwise makes no sense. Picking an extremely unpopular fight that they are sure to lose doesn’t serve the party’s interests, and it doesn’t even seem to serve the longer-term interests of individual members. The trouble is that the Republicans most eager to have this fight may believe that they can prevail somehow, and they seem to be encouraged in this belief because they are relying on the same sources of misinformation that have served them so poorly in the past.

It is as if no one learned anything from the experience of the party-wide delusion that Romney was going to win the election. Some Republicans are making all of the same mistakes that they made when they ignored all of the evidence suggesting that the GOP was likely to lose in 2012. Most of the time, the echo chamber hurts conservatives and Republicans by making them oblivious to inconvenient facts and ideas, but in this case it is leading them to believe in an alternate political reality with its own set of rules. In that alternative reality, a pointless, self-defeating effort becomes a clever political strategy, and obnoxious and politically toxic tactics are treated as normal and appropriate.

The topic was "violence at tea party rallies-gatherings etc."

Carol stated emphatically that there had never been a single instance of violence at any tea party event in the entire nation.

Now you and a couple of other of the thread morons come along wanting to add qualifiers__fk that!

Maybe you should also try "tea party rally arrests."

Of course Carol, you just had to pass on your usual lies and distortions.
The only reason the Postal Service is in financial difficulty is because of the Congressional mandates that were imposed upon the Postal Service. Congress passed the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA), which was signed into law by President G.W. Bush on December 20, 2006.
One of the provisions of the PAEA was to mandate that the Postal Service fully pre-fund future retiree health benefits for the next 75 years, and to do it within a ten-year window. This means that the Postal Service is required to send to the U. S. Treasury $5.5 billion each September 30. Remember, this is to pay for the future retirement health benefits of people who haven't even been born yet. The Postal Service is the only entity that is mandated by law to do this. No government agency, corporation or organization is required to fully pre-fund future retirees' health benefits.
You're assertion that Social Security is broke is another one of your goddamned lies. Social Security in 2011 took in more that it spent and added $95 billion to its surplus and lifted 20 million Americans of all ages out of poverty. It will only stop taking in more than it spends in 2021 which is easily remedied by restoring the Reagan standard that 90 percent of wages are covered by the Social Security tax, which now applies to only 83 percent of wages. If we went back to the Reagan standard, the Social Security tax would apply to close to $200,000 of wages this year instead of $110,100.
Fannie Mae is not broke LIAR, In 2012 Fannie Mae announced its largest annual profit of 17.2 billion. With the continued recovery of the housing industry it's doing just fine and in the black.
Freddie Mac is also doing better with the improving housing market.
Many people are in poverty because of the low wages paid by companies like Wal Mart. If we were to raise the minimum wage to a level that people could actually live on their salaries then much poverty would disappear. Your denigration of the poor demonstrates once more that you’re a fraud as a Christian.
Medicare is not broke LIAR. In fact the ACA has improved the solvency of the program.
We are not importing more oil LIAR. In 2012 we were importing 42% less oil.
The ACA is not about controlling health care STUPID! It's about reining in the abuses by big insurance that prevented millions from getting health insurance.
So, in three years everything with the post office will be okay. That's good to know.

"unfair to delay the individual mandate"? How so?

Because the healthcare industry, at great expense, has done everything expected of them to provide the services necessary and the people most affected by the mandate are entitled to sign-up. It's the law.

The GOP’s Misinformation Problem in Action (II)

Bill Kristol’s advice to the GOP today is a good example of how Republicans are routinely misinformed by their own pundits:

That’s the Republicans’ situation today. They have a hand they could easily make worse by panicking, and which could be good enough for a win or draw if they keep calm. And their odds could improve if they now take a few days vigorously to make their case to the country: that they have acted to fund the government—while protecting Americans from having to buy insurance they don’t want from exchanges they can’t trust, and while reversing the special deal the Obama administration arranged for Congress so that Congress will have to live by the laws they impose on others.

To state the obvious, Republicans don’t have a “hand” good enough to win or draw. Being calm or panicking is irrelevant here. The question isn’t whether Republicans are going to lose a standoff they should never have attempted, but how quickly they can minimize the damage they are doing to themselves and to the country. Urging the GOP to “stand pat” in the hope of a “victory” that isn’t forthcoming is to encourage Republicans to maximize the harm they do to themselves and to the U.S.. It is mindless dead-ender advice that ought to be ignored, but because it flatters Republican politicians and tells them what they want to hear it will probably be taken seriously.

Americans are overwhelmingly opposed to what the Republicans have already done, a majority is opposed to what they are trying to do (i.e., defund the ACA), and disapproval of Congressional Republicans is equally overwhelming. What case could Republican leaders possibly make that would turn around public opinion when it is against them by a margin of 50-60 points? As it happens, the government hasn’t been funded, and Americans are not “protected” from the provisions of the ACA, so a case asserting that these things have been done will simply make the GOP appear more ridiculous than it is. The longer that the shutdown continues, the worse these numbers are going to get for the GOP. If Republicans “stand pat,” they are likely to be run over.

You right whiners are confused.

Those who support the President do not worship Obama. If you look, we spend our time here correcting your lies.

Where the problem lies is that you freakin hate Obama so much that just regular support seems like worship to you dipsticks.

Why do you people hate Obama so much? Interesting question. Why it is that the election of this President spurred the birth of the Obama hating Tea Party. After just 3 weeks in office no less. Not while Bush was doubling the debt & driving this country into the ground. Nooooooooo. But after Obama was elected.

So, do you think that if MvcCain would have won in 2000, would we see the Tea Party formed?

Be honest with that answer. We all know the answer.

You don't know spending has consistently gone up under every president and every Congress over the past five or six decades?

Sometimes it's even gone higher under Democratic controlled Congresses.

But I know. Democrats can do no wrong.
