Gridlock, moneyed interests and knee-jerk opposition to Obama have kept lawmakers from doing what's best for the nation on so many issues. It would be tragic if even the murder of 20 innocent children fails to move lawmakers beyond the overwhelming influence of money in politics.[...] It is utterly baffling that Congress might fail to close the loophole that allows as many as 40 percent of gun purchases to be completed without determining whether the buyer legally can own one. According to recent polls, more than 90 percent of Americans support background checks. It polls higher than apple pie and just behind motherhood.

The gun lobby has convinced Republican lawmakers and even some Democrats that keeping those records is tantamount to a gun registry that would lead to confiscation. It's another paranoid argument from the black-helicopter crowd, pushed by the gun industry to gin up the anger and fear that motivate its supporters.[...]

Voters need to find a way to overcome the extraordinary wealth and power of the gun lobby. Until they do, increasing numbers of men, women and children will die of gunfire.

Charlie Rangel, the dean of the New York congressional delegation, has blamed Republicans for the 2010 House ethics investigation into his fund-raising and legislative activities which drove him from the chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee.

Rangel also complains frequently about the way the media treats him and other Democrats.

Today, he married those two themes when I asked him about State Senator Malcolm Smith, the chair of the Senate’s Independent Democratic conference, who was arrested and charged yesterday with trying to bribe his way into the Republican mayoral primary.

“Malcolm Smith was all right until he left the Democratic Party,” the congressman told me shortly before the start of the National Action Network’s annual conference in midtown this morning.“I don’t know any of the people that he was involved in this corruption with, but it proves to me, whether in religion, academics, you try to shortcut the system, if you try to poison the well that you drank from, it doesn’t work out. And I feel so sorry for him and his family. And, really, don’t see that this will have any impact on the Democratic Party.”

Rangel added,“It just seems as though something happened within the Republican Party, and surprisingly the press doesn’t go to any of them asking how they feel. But I’ve been deluged with questions, which, I’m not complaining, but it just seems to me that it is a serious Republican problem.”

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer was standing nearby when Rangel was speaking and took away a slightly different lesson from the scandal.

“It’s time for real reform” of the distribution of City Council member items, he said.

Part of the scandal involved City Councilman Dan Halloran, a Republican from Queens, who allegedly promised to steer $80,000 in member items to a nonprofit group in exchange for direct cash payments and campaign donations.

Just read there are almost 9,000,000 Americans receiving disability payments.

This along with over 40,000,000 Americans receiving EBT cards (food stamps).

The people getting disability can stop looking for work, so they no longer get counted as "unemployed". The unemployment rate goes down, Lord Obama brags about how the economy is improving under his brilliant leadership.

If the economy is recovering, can we stop paying unemployment checks to people for almost TWO YEARS? The length of time a person could receive unemployment was six months until it was decided that the economy was so bad that it needed to be extended. Can we stop?

we who weren't fooled by The One, can sit back as the shit begins to hit the fan and watch. meanwhile, The One is already back on the campaing trail after three family vacations this year. similar to when Nero flew to Vegas as Benghazi burned. "ahhh fee-el yaw pain!"

Uninformed Americans who voted for the empty suited Idol, Obama, and weren’t paying attention are in for a rude awakening. The pain of ObamaCare was postponed by pushing implementation back until after the 2012 election. They'll yell loud ‘as 2013 progresses and we all come to grips with the Affordable Care Act.

The employer mandate takes effect on Jan. 1, 2014, so companies are deciding what kind of health insurance, if any, to offer employees. We can be certain that some employers who currently offer insurance will find they can save money by dropping it and paying the required penalty. America's largest private medical insurer, WellPoint, is planning on it, says executive vice president Lori Beer: "There will be a transition from employer-based [coverage] to more consumers as purchasers."

If you think workers will be surprised when their coverage disappears, just wait until they discover they'll be violating federal law if they don't buy health insurance on their own.

Employers who've raised this issue with employees report that many of them, especially lower-paid ones, are simply incredulous. No one can force them to spend their hard-earned dollars on insurance if they don't want to, workers say—but they're wrong. Low-paid workers might be able to get subsidies for the premiums they'll have to pay on the state insurance exchanges, if they can figure out how. The exchanges are scheduled to open for enrollment on Oct. 1, but so far only 20 states are setting them up. Many of the other states' exchanges will have to be run by Washington, and it still isn't clear how they will work.

Unpleasant surprises may even await workers who do not have employer-sponsored coverage. That's because a business that fails to offer insurance to workers can avoid paying any penalties if it has fewer than 31 full-time employees. So lots of small- business owners I've talked with are figuring out how to replace full-time employees with part-timers. They know it's bad for employees but feel they have no choice.

While implementing the ACA will be a growing topic through 2013, it is only the beginning of health care taking over the economy.

From 17.9% of GDP in 2011, total health care spending will grow to 19.6% in 2021, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services project. Health care, already the economy's largest sector by far and proportionally (and absolutely) much bigger than any other nation's health care sector, will keep growing faster than GDP. It can't do that forever, but with 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 every day, how the growth ends up becoming sustainable is not remotely clear.

Medicine will keep improving, and as the population ages, more people will want the best care available; we cannot possibly keep providing it as we plan to, yet no one will want to say no. As the costs of health care become increasingly socialized, healthy taxpayers will increasingly see obese smokers as the enemy. The conflicts will be personal, painful, and powerful—and we'll try not to confront them.

One day we will wake up, and we'll have become the health care nation.’...as you wait on long lines behind the new formerly illegal immigrants granated amnesty, who will imediately qualify for benefits, unlike other entitlements with a 5 year wait.
