Houston's Aubrey Coleman Should Be Suspended for the Season

Great, I am sickened at what I witnessed yesterday in the match-up between the Houston Cougars and the Arizona Wildcats.

I am troubled by his actions too, but to suspend him for the year. whatever, get a grip. How bout the clown who flopped across the floor like a European punk and somehow coaxed the ridiculous call from the idiot ref. As bad as a call as I have seen all year. When can you throw yourself in front of the offensive guy and then practically take propel yourself onto the floor like you have been hit by a truck and get rewarded for a charge. Give me a break.

He should've been arrested for assault at the door.

Being stepped on without provocation is a crime outside the arena, and in the stands, and its a crime on the floor.

A sporting event is not an excuse for crime. Would he be free to shoot somebody on the floor, as long as it happens before the clock hits 0:00?

It was assault on the sport to flop like that and get rewarded with a b.s. play.

He was thrown out of the game rightfully so and will miss the next game as well.

No one got hurt and so you keep it in perspective and move on.

I have been a coach and teacher for 29 years and this incident is a reflection of the skewed values in our society. We teach sportsmanship in our programs. The actions of overpaid prima donnas at the professional level are glossed over too often. These young people believe themselves to be above the rules based upon their perceived 'worth' in dollars and that sometimes manifests itself in being above the law as well. This has trickled down into college, high school, and even younger athletic contests. We, the public, may condemn the acts verbally, but we condone them by spending our dollars to give them an audience. At the lower levels, young athletes reflect the actions of those they emulate - those they see- those that receive press. Too often the coverage is like that we have seen by Mr. Coleman.
The discipline should be swift and harsh. This is not the act of a 'sportsman'. An honorable competitor would have offered both an apology and a helping hand had this been accidental. He or she would have shown remorse. The view shown from the back does not show an 'athlete' walking over something. You don't step flatfooted. Had the same footage been run with the person on the ground being an "enemy" being stepped on by an American soldier, the hue and cry would have focused on the inhumane treatment by an American.
We are increasingly allowing our athletes to be undisciplined by having minimal or even no consequences for their actions. As representatives of their respective sports or ambassadors for their colleges, they should be held to the highest standards of sportsmanship and common decency. If a season's suspension results in a better human being, and then someone who truly wants to be a part of the game, this might be the best life lesson for not only this young man, but for younger aspiring athletes to treat not only the game with respect, but each other.
