Moore might still be angry about not breaking 80 last year, so his troops should be fired up and motivated. Maybe his entire pre-game pep talk can be to simply write 80 on the chalkboard.

The term "rivalry" is often overutilized these days...especially in sports. By very definition, this is in no way a rivalry.

Rival (n) one that equals another in desired qualities : peer

WCU has never been (nor does it seem to have any hope of being) a football rival of App per the above definition. Just as Clemson can never be a basketball rival of UNC ( as it is 0 for Chapel Hill) etc.

We (WCU) could have said the same thing years ago...when Coach Waters first came to Cullowhee he pretty well owned ASU...from 1969 to 1984 his teams won 11 of the 16 games between App and the Cats...I have been priveleged to have witnessed just about every WCU-ASU game since 1974...there have been some great games...the atmosphere is electric as each player and fan wants to beat their opponents...yes it is a rivalry - always has been - always will be...

I respect what ASU has done on the football field, especially the past four years...but one needs to remember that all sports run in a cycle...I can vividly remember just four years ago all of the ASU fans screaming for Coach Moore's head after they lost to Western (2004)...in fact this year following the losses to LSU and JMU, I heard these same fans stating that they are a little upset and worried about Coach Moore...this after the man that had led them to three National Championships...

Western's problem stem from the years Coach Waters got sick with ALS...his last good team (1984) was as good as any the Southern Conference has seen...seven members of the team played ball in the NFL...

I sincerely believe that things are going in the right direction...what we have been missing is stability and consistencey on the coaching staff...Coach Waters (and for that matter Coach Moore at ASU) had many of the same assistants for years and this made a huge difference...Coach Wagner is a class act...he has brought in a completely new philosophy that will eventually change the program, but it will not be done overnight...I applaud his, the coaches and most importantly the players for their work this year...it has not been easy, but to me they are the cornerstone that this program will build on...

While we have not won many against ASU since 1985, the day will come when things change and I along with many Western fans will be there to cheer our school on...no matter the outcome Saturday we will be there backing the Cats...

Comments by Skip Smith were very good and I want to echo his commentary. Coach wagner and his staff will make us definite rivals with all the teams in the SoCon within the next two years.

GO CATS!!!!!!!!!!

Right on Mr. Smith! I wish more of our alumni actually cared as you do. I think fan apathy has long been a problem; whether attendance-wise or donation-wise. I'm afraid there will be a 50/50 fan ratio this Saturday, but as you say, Apps day will come. I'm guessing you were at the '83 ASU/WCU game-41 to 15 and not even that close! What would the anti- Moore crowd have thought back then!?

Skip,

Brilliant and objective commentary. The 1984 squad was a good one as well as the 1986 sqaud. The 1986 squad lost to UT-Chatt and the conference championship as well. I believe Coach Wagner has the football program heading in the right direction. I sincerely hope that teams around the league will be calling him "Dennis The Meanace" in the not so distant future.
