Lawyer: Trooper Exam Unfair

Full story: Hartford Courant

Racism is so entrenched in the Connecticut State Police that basic hiring practices ensure only a few minority troopers will even enter a training class, never mind be promoted in the ranks, an attorney ...

The state should go to a banding system that was used in Bridgeport a few years back in their hiring process. They now have a large black membership.

Same BS again, you hire the smartest and brightest. If they can't read or speak English how can they function.

Well, let me see now, if you can't pass the test to the score needed then what does your color have to do with it?Or race? When I was a kid I took a test for nursing LPN and they only neede 20 or so nurses back in the baby boomer days, so I passed the test 2 times but not in the top 20 and I AM WHITE and didn't get in.. well, shame on me for not having a group to take them, to court and sue huh? oh well sux to be white, balck, hispanic, i guess

"Only candidates who score at least 85 out of 100 on a written test are chosen to continue training, even though the passing score is 65. That practice discriminates against members of minority groups, Williams said."

So Williams is saying that minorities are not as smart as whites? Sure sounds that way to me. And look at the roster of people and organizations that are behind him ... WOW.

That rubbish aside, we want the best and brightest on the roads. PERIOD. No dumbing down the ranks for ANY reason.

This has got to be the most stupid group of people ever assembled in one place... Williams being the dolt leader.

While I firmly believe that racism or sexism should not be tolerated on any level, I want the best and brightest in our police force. I think it is racism to assume that you have to lower the bar in order for minorities to succeed. It is shameful that anyone would use this excuse to get what they want. I'm sure there were plenty of white applicants that didn't place higher than a 65. Who can they sue?

If these lawyers win this case, I wonder what people will see when they look at a new black CT State Trooper?

If I were a black person in this state I would be angered.

Why on earth is there a National Black State Troopers Assocation? If the minority community doesn't want to be separate why do they continually separate themselves?

Personally I agree that the standard should be high. If minorities can't make the grade then maybe they should have studied harder.

We should take applicants who score the lowest and put them in charge of Rell's security operations. Will she be happy THEN? THIS IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS PIECE OF GARBAGE THE COURANT HAS PUBLISHED IN YEARS!

Having read the story regarding discriminatory hiring practices by the Connecticut State Police, I felt compelled to share my opinion.
I count several police officers among my friends, and can attest to the demanding nature of this career.
Instead of targeting the police department, why not examine why so few minority applicants score 85% or above on the written exam? To me the onus should be on the educational system, not the state police. Should we lower our standards whenever a given group can't meet them? Perhaps we shouldn't fail our medical students if they are minorites and score on the low end of the class. I'd love to have a surgeon who graduated because the standards were lowered so he could enter medical school. Wake up people, high standards are necessary to protect the people in our state. I worked incredibly hard to earn a PhD in genetics, but when I was turned down by MIT, and Stanford for graduate school, I simply accepted that there were others more qualified, and I went elsewhere. That's life, and the minority, would be police officers need to either make the cut, or move on.

If you are buying into the "We take the best and brightest" that Commissioner Danaher is selling, you need to wake up. The test scores you receive to be hired by a law enforcement agency does not mean the best and brightest are at the top. Who says that your score determines that you are going to be the best trooper because you scored higher. When Danaher says that, it's offensive! Do you think all troopers currently on the CSP right now, scored in the 90s & 80s that he continually refers to? NO! Look at the New York Report, Sgt. Fontenella lets take a look at his test scores; I bet he's at the top. He's the best at stealing money from his subordinates and the state? Let's look at the other managers in the report with their high test scores, who abuse their authority and mismanage the CSP, are they the best you're refering to? Let's look at the troopers who scored high on their test that manage the agency now, in the messed up state the agency is in, are they your best Commissioner Danaher? Yeah, Commissioner Danaher keep making your stupid statements. I bet if you had taken the test to be a CT Trooper too, you would also be the best and brightest? Do you even know what year you're in or day of the week it is? You're proud of the leadership class that you just took, were you paying attention or were you sleeping? Ask the academy to give you a spreadsheet of the test scores for the troopers you have now on the agency. Take a look at who they are and were they are and what they've done, before you open your mouth about the best troopers come from a high test score!!!!!!!!!!

The initial cut-off score to continue through the rest of the costly and time consuming hiring process was set at 86. Once that group of applicants is exhausted, the next wave of applicants that scored lower than 86 is put through the process. This continues until the list of all viable candidates is exhausted. The line has to be drawn somewhere. It is impossible to streamline the hiring process but at the same time expect all applicants to complete every phase before hiring is conducted. It would take a decade to hire someone. More stupidity- and this charge is led by one of the most ignorant Troopers this State has to offer.

I have been saying this for years!
The Latinos or Blacks that CAN make the grade are not going to apply to be a Trooper,They know there is more money in the real world. This a Compliant at allowing anyone that is Black or Latino to be a Trooper but whites have to pass the test. NAACP needs to get better applicants to apply for the exam, Thats all.

Um, let me get this straight. This guy is basically saying that minorities are being descriminated on because they are stupid? Because they can't pass the test with an 85 or better, they should get special treatment?? If I was a minority, I would be extreemly offended!

It was my impression that the test that these Troopers are taking is designed to pick the brightest candidates. It is also my understanding that over 1000 people take the test each time it comes around. WHY would the State want to even look at people with lower scores? They can afford to be picky.

Oh, by the way, if you want to get a job at the postal service, it is pretty much the same test proceedure. The people look at test scores, and work from there. And, the Postal Service doesn't even SEE a person in front of them... they are looking at paperwork until the interview!!!

perhaps in my next life i will have an understanding of how the ability to score a higher grade on this or similar exams can be attributed to race or ethnicity. you either know the issues being tested to become a cop or you don't. lowering the standards is a disservice to the public and should be insulting to the black and hispanic population because it says you can't get in unless we give you an edge. i bet the lawyers filing the suit (mostly black) could pass the test!

THAT is exactly how it should be ... the State doesn't need to DUMB DOWN the State Police in order to get minority recruits.... ity shold be the BEST QUALIFIED and Race should have NOTHING to do with it

THIS COMES AS NO BIG SURPRISE. THIS PRACTICE IS GOING ON THROUGHOUT THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT AS FAR AS TESTING PRACTICES ARE CONCERNED. THE STATE RAISES THE LEVEL OF TEST SCORES AS WELL AS CHOOSING CANDIDATES FOR HIGH LEVEL MANAGERIAL POSITIONS, NOT BASED ON EXPERIENCE, BUT BASED ON FAVORITISM.
I AM GLAD THAT THEY ARE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT. I HOPE THEY ARE SUCCESSFUL.

Why not have the test the way the navy does it, by your social security number. That way nobody knows your color or sex. It is the fairest way.

Is this test like the civil service exam or even licensing exams? If so, aren't candidates given materials to study before the test? In order to get a driver's license, you have to pass a written exam. However, if you don't study the book, you probably won't pass. If these minorities are given the same materials to study as the non minorities, why can't they pass? Maybe because they didn't take the time to study and are now screaming discrimination. What a joke!
