"If I offended any diehard WVU fans, you should get thicker skin."

From the looks of your article, you're the one who needs to develop thicker skin. For one who was trying so hard not to be an over-reactive fan, you fell way short of the mark.

For the most part, much as I hate to say it, you were right. Syracuse did an exceptional job in all three phases of the game. WVU played their worst game of the season. Of course, all of this is based upon the premise that Syracuse is a bad football team. Hate to break it to ya; they're not. They may not be as good as USC (They're not even in the same class.) but they've been playing uninspired football all season. They paid for against the Trojans, and when that didn't sink in they finally paid for it against Rutgers. Friday night was a simple application of the lessons learned from the 1st half. Funny how it actually works.

Bruce Irvin: His lack of production has nothing to do with his being a known commodity and everything to do with his being an every down player.(I think Jeff Casteel finally figured that out.) Last year Bruce was only brought in on the opponent's 3rd downs, and at that, not every one of them. While the rest of the defense was doing the bulk of the work, he was on the sidelines waiting his turn. This year, until recently, he's played every down. As a result, he's been getting gassed. That's what happens when an undersized, specialty-down, rush-linebacker, plays DE every down.

What about Julian Miller? He's played DE the past two years. Now he's playing DT. Do you think that change was easy. We didn't lose 1 or 2 LB's; we lost ALL 3! Najee Goode, the only LB returning with any experience was a back-up the last two years.

Chris Nield? Did you think he was an overnight success? It took him the 3 previous seasons to develop into what he showed us last year. He was also 300 lbs! Don't expect undersized guys like Jorge Wright & Josh Taylor to pick up the slack overnight.

I, too, am not a fan of Pat Miller. Yes, he has played well at times, but he's been too inconsistent. He's allowed too many 3rd & long completions on his side of the field, let alone TD's. Now, who would you have to replace him? Therein lies the problem. A lot of the corners may know the defense, but knowing how it works and actually getting out there and playing it are two different things. Right now they just don't have the depth.

Penalties: Did you know that Syracuse was only flagged 3 times all night. You watched the game. Did you see how many times Geno Smith was hit? Many were legit; many were late and weren't called. Howzabout the late hits when a back or receiver was already down and the play whistled dead? Howzabout Tavon Austin getting drilled out of bounds twice? Howzabout the Syracuse TE knocking down a WVU player well after the play was dead, right in front of a dumb zebra, who even helped the player up, but didn't throw the flag. Howzabout the play whistled dead, and another Syracuse TE was still blocking a WVU defender; pushed him another 10 yards or so after the whistles stopped blowing? Syracuse may have still won, but that stuff adds up, if not kept in check.

I don't know about you, but with all the losses (Let's not forget two losses from the O-Line.) and a new HC to boot, you couldn't have possibly expected a NC this year. Worse yet, WVU doesn't even know what conference they'll be in next year. You gotta give it time. Life goes on. So will the WVU Mountaineers!!!
